Rating: Summary: Incredible Review: This is clearly the best documentary I've ever seen. I can't recommend it strongly enough. I watched one tape a week, and when I finished the last tape, I went right back to the first and watched it all over again. I wish every major episode/event in history had a documentary of this quality.
Rating: Summary: A New Standard Review: If imitation is a form of flattery, then this must be the most flattered film of all time. Ken Burns' film has set a new style in documentary filmmaking that has since been widely copied. That even many of the imitations are good is a tribute to Burns' stylistic ingenuity. He has found for us a new way to compellingly tell a story, and it has served us well.As for the film itself, it is not only very moving, but also very informative. I've never seen a subject so well organized, so easy to follow, and so completely encapsulated as the Civil War has been in this film. After many. many viewings, this film still holds up well.
Rating: Summary: A treasure box to be shared by all Americans Review: This series can only be described as wonderful and magnificent, and it is especially dear to my heart. Those in want of an INTRODUCTION to the most vital part of America's heritage should reserve a Sunday morning and afternoon to Ken Burn's film. For me, this documentary was a doorway to Douglas Freemantle, Bruce Catton, Samuel Whatkins, Shelby Foote, and many others who, through their books, diaries, and essays, have become like good friends over the years.
Rating: Summary: A Teaching Tool, A Treasure Review: As a history teacher, I rely on the gripping, the striking to captivate my students. The Civil War does that unlike any documentary ever told. Just as "The World at War" captured the imagination of a young historian, Ken Burns' series has the ability not only to teach history, but to spark enthusiasm for learning!
Rating: Summary: Wow! What else can I say Review: This is easily the best documentry I have ever seen. I can't tell everyone how much I learned about this nation's Civil War History. The insight by way of the soldiers diaries is incredible, the pictures and paintings of the battlefields makes feel there during the chaos of battle. (Hint, watch it in surround sound, it sounds sooo good that way)

The information is plainly presented to the every-day citizen, and doesn't overwhelm the viewer with over analysis of the battles and strategies. A spring board into the study of Civil War history, and worthy of many repeated viewings.
