Summary: Nice foundation for understanding Pilates, but...
Review: This exercise video wasn't what I expected, given the title. Normally an exercise program that promotes weight loss is one that burns fat aerobically, by elevating the heart rate for 20-30 minutes. Well, my heart rate wasn't even elevated for five minutes with this Pilates routine, although I got a nice stretch and some body sculpting exercises for my lower body.

So that you have some perspective on where I am coming from here, I am still new to Pilates. I have been using two other Pilates workout videos for more than a month now: Pilates Beginning Mat Workout (also produced by Gaiam) and The Zone Pilates Mat Workout. Either of these two was a more advanced level than Pilates Conditioning for Weight Loss. From what I can tell, the portion on this video/dvd that pertains to weight loss is a short motivational speech tacked on at the beginning, before any exercises are performed. It's all very new-age-y and pretty, with lovely natural scenery in the background and soothing acoustic music. Then at the very end, a voice over reaffirms the mind-body-balance connection to losing weight and making a commitment to a healthier lifestyle...and that's it. Doesn't offer much in the way of practical advice, nor a workout that does more than stretching and toning. You will need to add on your own half hour of aerobic exercises and a sensible diet to see your waistline shrink.

I will say one thing in favor of this Pilates tape, Suzanne Deason does take the time to explore correct breathing and posture, at least more comprehensively than the other workout tapes go into. So my recommendation is that this is one to pick up for a jumping off point to more serious workouts, so that you understand the foundation of Pilates. Just don't be fooled into thinking you're going to burn any fat this way.

Summary: Excellent DVD

Summary: Dont waste your time....
Review: This title is very deceiving. It is slow moving and I dont feel that it will do much for weight loss. The background is beautiful and the music is relaxing but if you are looking for a workout this isnt the DVD for you. The workout is long and boring and the instructors pause too long between exercises. This is more for someone who wants to tone up or is into yoga. I would recommend something a little more involved if you are looking for a weight loss DVD.

Summary: Great for Destressing/Relaxation!
Review: This video is great if you want to relieve stress, relax and still be semi-active. I use this video to relax after I have done my workout. The music, scenery and instructors voice makes you feel like your in a wonderland. This video is definately not for weight loss-unless you are completely immobile throughout your life.

Summary: Great for Beginners
Review: This was my first attempt at pilates, besides a class. This video is great, there are 3 people on the screen at all times. Each person is a level so you can progess at your own level, yet still know the correct positioning for your level. Great Instructions. 2 Thumbs UP

Summary: FIVE MONTHS LATER still LOVE this workout!!
Review: This workout was my intro to pilates and has remained my core workout (2-3 times a week) for many months. I have gone from a size 20 to a 16 with a lo-carb diet and pilates exercise.

What I love about this workout...no jumping around, no shoes, no equipment needed - except a very good yoga mat and I do suggest getting the 1 inch thick type!! I had neck surgery and many workouts cause me pain...this workout makes me feel wonderful, strong, flexible, and relaxed!! My abs, legs and hips are shaping up fast, but for the upperbody I need a weekly workout w/ weights.

I love the scenic views, the simplicity of the workout, and the meditational benefits of this program but to get the full impact it requires a full hour of concentration (i.e. alone time without interuptions!!)

Even months later I still get a very good workout with this program. The pace is perfect for beginners and now I just increase my reps during the instruction portions. I have tried several other pilates workouts looking for the right companion to this but I have yet to enjoy any other pilates workout as much I enjoy this one!!!! Denise Austin, Pilates for Everybody using resistence bands is my second favorite and a good intermediate step after mastering this.
