Summary: How long
Review: I loved this video. It is clear instruction and very colorful. I know it will take awhile until I can dance like Joynan. I am wondering how long she has been dancing and teaching?

Summary: Liked it
Review: I really liked this video. I bought it based on some of the great reviews and I was not disappointed. Joynan is a good teacher and a graceful dancer

Review: I think that there is a problem here with everyone's reviews. No one should have put down the lady who said this video was utterly ridiculous. Because clearly there is a problem here. I bought this video expecting zil work and veil work after reading everyone's reviews. This video (which is of the same title and same photo's on the front and back) had absolutely no veil or zil work. It did include the part mentioned about the boom box and Joynan rewinding it during filming. It was of lousy production quality, and had the most horrible music I have ever heard (Well- I kind of got use to it after an hour of being subjected to it. lol).
It was also more for intermediate/advanced dancers, a beginner would be so lost if viewing this video.
On the positive side, I like Joynan. I had never been exposed to her before I bought this video and I really liked her personality. She was kind, you could tell just by listening to her. I also loved her dancing ability. I didn't think she was sloppy at all. She was very informative and the dance routine she put together for us to do (in 3 different segmants- broken up) was really quite lovely and professional looking IMO. I think the more involved with dancing we get, the harsher we judge other dancers. But, if you whipped out the choreography she did (to diff. music, please) to an audience who were not dancers themselves or even beginners, you would knock their socks off!
The segmant on Tahitian dance was fun to watch, not instructional. The Japanese dance was hmm, boring I would have to say (not instructional). Sahra REALLY stood out (though I thought she acted really space cadetish) when she did her (I would say middle eastern dance but she made it a point that belly dancing is NOT middle eastern dance when she did finally speak) dance, it was great. She was fun to watch! And her tummy coin trick was superb.
Over all, I don't regret adding this video to my library. And I definatly will be learning the choreography that Joynan does. This is NOT one of the first 5 video's I would suggest buying as a beginner, but definatly worth the price if you have just graduated from beggining classes, and are not so Neena and Veena professionally pampered that you can't grin and bear the shoddy filmanship and horrid music.

Summary: Utterly ridiculous
Review: I'm not sure if I saw the same exact video, but it
was one in the Joynan series. The music is so awful
it almost makes the video unbearable to watch. The
quality was so poor it looked like she was literally
recording herself. She had her "portable stereo"
sitting on a stool and ran over to cut it off and
rewind the tape during filming. Also she does not
appear to be a very good dancer. She appears somewhat
sloppy and awkward. Perhaps it is because she has bad
posture. There are many belly dance videos that are
bad and don't seem to be very many good ones.

I wrote this a while back and have since been exposed to more dancers and videos. There is one thing I have come to accept. Belly dance videos are just low production. Most of the time you'll find that the quality is not that much better than a home video..Belly dancers generally don't have money to spend on big productions. However the quality of dance can be quite good. This being said I still think this video is one of the more tacky and Joynan is not a great dancer. She is not the worst dancer I have seen (I just don't feel she's quite the professional dancer that she is played up to be. There are many much better videos and dancers. This video does have some instructional value, but I would definitely put it at the bottom of my list. I don't want anyone to think I am representing a specific interest so I can't mention these people, but I urge you to search the web for the greatest selection. There are some nice sites with reccommendations and reviews.

Summary: Good clear instruction, poor quality
Review: Joynan breaks down the basic bellydancing moves very well. You'll learn proper posture as well as executing the basic moves at varying speeds. However, she does not show how to combine basic upper body movements with the lower body movements you just learned...a very important part of bellydancing!! She wears a long skirt while teaching hip movements, which does not allow you to clearly see what she is doing with her legs. Also, while her dance routines are lovely, there's no way you'll be doing them by using this video! And, unless you happen to have finger cymbals and a veil lying around the house, the second half of the tape is basically useless to a beginner. If you're looking for a decent quality tape, this is not the one. You can barely hear the music, if at all, and the picture is blurry.

Summary: Not recommended for first-time bellydancers
Review: While Joynan does seem to be a nice, pleasant person, I really can't say that her video was for me. I have never done any belly dancing in my life, and I found it difficult to follow along with her. In the first segment (which is the only part of the video I viewed) she wears a long navy blue skirt which makes it difficult to see her hips, legs and feet and what she is doing with them. I think this video would be better for someone who does know the basic core moves of belly dancing and just wants to improve or refresh themselves on it. Probably not good for a person attempting to learn belly dancing for the first time.
