Rating: Summary: Tivo's Great for Kids Review: Before we installed a Tivo, my little boys used to watch cartoons on Saturday mornings. Now they watch Nova science programs. Before we installed a Tivo, we were held hostage by our TV. All conversation stopped once a favorite show began. Now we can pause a program to explain things to our children or share related thoughts on what we're watching. We block out channels we don't want our children to watch. We fill our Tivo's memory with educational shows. We have two Tivos now, and we'll never go back to letting our kids watching straight network TV again.
Rating: Summary: Buy it! You'll LOVE it! Review: TiVo has completely changed the way I watch TV! I used to think there was never anything good on, but with TiVo, if the ideal show for you is on at 2:00am, it will get it for you and you can watch it any time you want. The best part is once TiVo has a show saved for you, you have full digital control over it... Pause, slow motion, rewind, and fast forward (say goodbye to commercials ;-). Every person I've shown this product to has bought one...it's awesome!
Rating: Summary: TIVO is amazing! Review: I'm 100% convinced that this is the future. TIVO will be an absolute success. The unit is user friendly, easy to use, has awesome thumbs up - thumbs down data mining capabilities. TIVO runs on Linux. TIVO has fantastic quality. The main reason it is better than REPLAY: TIVO learns from your usage patterns and then trys to record shows it thinks you might like. Wow!
Rating: Summary: This is by far a superior PVR/service Review: Don't let the negative reviews scare you away. A lot of people need to realize that purchasing a PVR with the TiVo service creates for the buyer a new paradigm in watching shows. They are now able to watch any television on their own schedule, rather than having to adhere to the network's showtimes. Just like a VCR, only better: you can pause or rewind a live show, record a favorite show for the entire season in one setting, and you can get suggestions for other shows you might like from the TiVo service. People who complain about "hidden fees" obviously didn't do their homework. The TiVo service in its current incarnation charges a $9.95 monthly fee or $199 lifetime subscription. A TiVo player+lifetime subscription is in league with Replay's pricing, and not any more expensive. Reasons I chose TiVo over Replay: 1) The TiVo service was by far more intuitive for picking shows and choosing options. Clearer menus, more control and it's all transparent on the screen so you can still see what's going on in the background. 2) The remote is awesome! Clean ergonomics, easy to use, more hassle-free than Replay's "off-the-shelf" style of remote. 3) Contrary to what the Replay-lovers' postings declare, the video quality at TiVo's higher settings is actually just as good, if not superior to the competitions. I'll admit this is a personal preference, but I dare you to go to a store and compare the two. 4) Customer service is second-to-none. Never had a problem getting through, low wait periods, courteous staff... 5) NOISE... Folks, this is not something that a lot of people think of, but I'm a movie nut and when I'm watching a movie, I prefer not to have any distracting background noise. The Philips company did a good job on engineering the TiVo box. I think it is MUCH QUIETER than the competition's. 6) Less heat. Plus, I just found out that TiVo is Linux-based. Based on all the current information about Linux's stability as an O/S platform, I'll take that as a good sign.
Rating: Summary: Convenience at your fingertips Review: I used to record my shows on video tape. It was a cumbersome process. Every VCR has a different method of programming. It was awful and a waste of time. Now that I have a Tivo box, watching TV is actually fun again. There is ALWAYS something to watch because of my Tivo. I work early in the morning and I never ever used to watch Letterman or Leno and I felt like I was missing out on a piece of pop culture. Now I watch those shows daily and fast forward through all the garbage (like Letterman's jokes). It so easy and convenient. This device is only going to get better, sleeker and more advanced. I can't wait to see what they come up with next. Interactive TV is the future!
Rating: Summary: Stay Away From Tivo! Review: I have had a Tivo for about two months. I will do my best not let my frustrations make my review to harsh. I hated Tivo. The video quality was poor, and it seems like they spent more time on graphics than on the actual working product. I was never told about the $10 service fee, plus that stupid dancing TV never suggested anything relevant to my viewing habits. How does giving Star Trek 3 thumbs up tell Big Brother Tivo that I like Spanish Soap operas? IF A COMPANY IS GOING TO MONITOR WHAT I WATCH AT LEAST DO IT ACURATLEY. Unfortunately I am outside my return period and am stuck with it, and I am addicted to the features of a PVR. So i bought a Replay. Now that is a well thought out product. BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD TIVO!
Rating: Summary: Changes the way you watch TV Review: I was a bit skeptical at first, but after using Tivo for a few weeks I'm hooked. Its just so easy to use for recording your favorite shows.. and I dont see what the big deal with the service fees are. Tivo w/ a lifetime membership is the same price as a replay TV. But... Tivo looks nicer.. has better features.. and the remote easiest to use and the best designed I have ever handled.
Rating: Summary: TiVo is THE greatest thing since sliced bread! Review: No kidding! I no longer watch TV but instead I watch TiVo! Don't be swayed by the naysayers until you try it yourself. Especially don't listen to Replay groupies like Thady (he probably is a paid flack for the Microsoft funded TV antichrist that Replay has become). TiVo is the future of TV and it does work. I am no longer at the mercy of NBC, CBS, Fox or ABC. I can watch television that I like when I want to. While being able to pause and rewind live TV is cool it's the thumbs up and thumbs down rating system that's the true revolution. You can only get that in one PVR -- TiVo. Lastly, I want to point out to completely obvious. Don't believe that other Replay propoganda regarding the subscription fee. If you pay up front for a lifetime TiVo subscription, ITS THE SAME PRICE AS A REPLAY! TiVo has just provided me with additional options by allowing me to decide to pay monthly or yearly if I want to... now that's power to the consumer! (Sorry, now I sound like a paid TiVo flack and I'm honestly not...)
Rating: Summary: If you didn't rate this 5 stars you didn't read the manual! Review: TiVo is nothing short of fabulous. The complaints above are mostly unfounded. Ture, not call cable line ups are available. I too had a channel line up that was not yet available. I called them on a Saturday morning and by Wednesday my line up was available. They told me there are over 60,000 different channel line ups across the country. Can you imagine keeping that up to date? True, TiVo records things it thinks you would like BUT if it needs room to record what you requested it will delete these 'suggestions' to accomodate what you wanted it to record. True, TiVo has a monthly subscription fee OR you can get a life time subscription for $199 which get's it right to the price of Replay. This way you have a choice as to what you want to do. Hey, you can't loose they have a 30 day money back guarentee. Try it you'll LOVE it!
Rating: Summary: Keen idea, but a big disappointment Review: Well, the promises for ultimate control over watching television were certainly alluring enough to make the purchase of this rather-strangely designed machine (why does the faceplate remind me of HAL in 2001?). Unfortunately, what I got was a lot more than I asked for: a monthly fee, artificial intelligence that 'watches' what I watch & attempts to make 'suggestions' based on the widely-varying viewing habits between myself and my flat-mate. The interface is rather posh - I just wish that they had put the time & the effort used to make the swanky interface with groovy colours into a user interface that wasn't so convoluted. Looks like I'm going to the ReplayTV camp...
