Description:

Nathan Pritikin's son--and director of the famed institute launched by Dad--begins this lecture by claiming to love pizza and high-fat ice cream. But the viewer quickly learns that Robert Pritikin hasn't strayed too far from his family's low-fat roots when it comes to how he actually eats. His calorie-focused program concentrates on ways to fill up without filling out (eat smaller meals more often, eat fruit and vegetables alongside carbohydrates, and such). He recommends daily exercise and offers opinions on high-protein diets (thumbs down) and the absence of heart disease in France (a myth). This 78-minute talk before a (mostly svelte) audience also includes some intense medical information. Pritikin takes the trouble to explain how salt affects organ function and the medical difference between good and bad cholesterol. He also expounds upon heart disease and adult-onset diabetes, citing the most recent medical studies and throwing in a little anthropology as well. --Kimberly Heinrichs
