Description:

Volume 8 of Circuit, which bills itself as "the first music magazine on DVD," is a lot like Volumes 1-7. What you get are bits and pieces of performances and interviews with a lot of bands you've heard of but never heard, along with one or two familiar ones. Which is the point: to allow you to sample music by groups you otherwise wouldn't be exposed to. The one heavy hitter on this volume is J Mascis, formerly of Dinosaur Jr., who walks around New York and talks (very slowly) about his career (and gives a couple of acoustic performances in an apartment kitchen). There are also interviews with (but, unfortunately, no performances by) rappers Jurassic 5, along with an introduction to such up-and-comers as Mexican ravers Titan, French popsters Tahiti 80, and Belgian alt-rockers Hooverphonic. Most artists are given both performance footage and interviews. With 120 minutes of content (including a couple of unrelated movie trailers and a trivia contest), the price is right as a sampler for contemporary (but so far unheralded) groups. --Marshall Fine
