Description:

This eclectic edition of the Circuit music magazine on DVD has a mixed lineup of whimsy and social purpose. We begin with the Scots rock trio, Bis, who shoot indoor hoops (not all that well, frankly, but is basketball why we love Scotland?) and talk about their jangly songs of pure adolescent experience. Meanwhile, Robyn Hitchcock sits in a parking lot for a spirited interview/performance, and the Afghan Whigs subject themselves to a video tour diary. Alt supergroup Luna (comprised of former members of the Feelies, Chills, and Galaxie 500) hang out and drop a few hints of their logy, half-speed Velvet Underground sound. Ben Harper talks about the societal context for his music, and introduces a video presentation of his gospel-like "I Wanna Be Ready." For dessert, there's the sugar-coated hip-hop of the fun, charismatic Philadelphia band G. Love & Special Sauce, and a nice visit with power-pop singer-songwriter Justin Clayton, a former art student from Liverpool who once played guitar in a backing band for Julian Lennon. (Hmm... something hauntingly familiar about that...) --Tom Keogh
