Summary: Tough Choices, but a little biased.
Review: Perhaps "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (#60) said it best. If you bury a watch in the desert for a thousand years, it becomes treasure. I really find some of this list to be biased towards newer movies. As if newer movies are "garbage" or something. Seriously though...Citizen Kane won first place. Alright, but have you seen Lord of the Rings? Have you seen the Matrix? I bet they picked out a bunch of older people who just chose movies from their generation. Honestly though... AFI doesn't know best, but it does infuriate me a little when the only movies that make the top 10 are older movies. Gone with the Wind. A classic as some say. I have seen so many love stories that they seem ludacris by now. Still. Picking one hundred of the best movies would be a hard choice. Unforgiven got #98, but how does that make it worse than #97? It feels a little impossible to create a list like this. It is opinionated. Terminator didn't make the list. Reservoir Dogs is a no. Apparently many films didn't achieve the "top 100" status. I know there are some out there who don't really live their lives. They say things like, "The classics are the best and only good movies!" Wrong. Go watch Die Hard or something, because there is more to life than movies made 60 years ago.

Summary: SOME WERE LEFT OUT
Review: The list was a good one, but there were some movies I couldn't understand not being on the list. The Exorcist, Braveheart, Rain Man, The Empire Strikes Back, Deliverance and Dirty Harry should have made this list.

Summary: A good sampler of the top 100 films up to 1996
Review: This is an excellent sampler of the top 100 films up to 1996. I've collected all of the AFI movies that I could buy (96 out of 100), and I have watched two-thirds of them. This sampler allowed me to remember the movies I've seen, and to look forward to the remaining movies. I recommend this DVD, and I would like to see the AFI to put a similar edition in a coffee table book.

Summary: A Great Show With Great Movies
Review: This show is the result of nominations and votes, what AFI chose as the Top 100 American movies. It's a good list. It goes without saying that Tom, Dick, or Harry's theoretical lists may vary, but what AFI has done is compile a very solid list of 100 movies that have touched the lives of many. The show itself is a very nice presentation. The list starts at 100 and goes to 1, giving each movies its own little section, explaining what the movie is about, who the major players are, and why the movie is so beloved. A movie isn't on the list if it isn't a must-see. "AFI's 100 Years, 100 Movies" is a fun, for some informative, romp through cinema's past, and one would have to be a film snob trying not to enjoy it to not enjoy it.

Summary: A Film Lovers Dream
Review: To celebrate the centenial of American film, the AFI (American Film Institute) issued a list counting down the one-hundered greatest films of all time and also had a 3 hour long television special to publically broadcast it. The AFI showed clips of the greatest films, so even though I disagreed with the ordering of the films, it was wonderful to watch because I could watch clips of my favorite films, even if they weren't where I would have placed them. Also, many stars indroduced the films, or told how much they loved them, so you could know which stars like the same movies you do. This was wonderful for me and my family to watch, and I think that all movie buffs would enjoy it.

Summary: Perhaps the Controversy Makes This More Fun
Review: While I agree with many of the reviews below (both good and bad), I believe AFI has put together a good starting place for discussion about our cinema past. I don't necessarily agree with some of the films listed. I don't think that Platoon is the best Vietnam movie, although it's a great movie. I think that Full Metal Jacket is better. Does Unforgiven belong on the list? I don't think so, but the discussion is the part of the fun. I just think that AFI has given us the means to discuss and reflect upon what a great movie is. And, let's be honest, are there only 100 great ones? I doubt that the American Film institute would ever acknowledge that!

Summary: Burt and Dustin, Seek Therapy, Please
Review: Worth the asking price to see Burt Reynolds and Dustin Hoffman blubber on screen. Burt laughingly breaks down in tears over To Kill a Mockingbird, emphasizing that his father was a Southern sheriff and that he (Burt) doesn't understand racism and doesn't have a racist bone in his body. His comment reeks of insincerity and probably had Malcolm X doing somersaults in his grave. Dustin, dahling. What gives? Feeling a little remorse over all the babes you've poked and discarded like so many pieces of tissue? Get over yourself, Dustie, nobody's buying the sensitive, in touch w/ your feminine side routine. You're like the rest of us w/ XY chromosomes, you can't control the hormones and you know it. Only film critics seem to like Citizen Kane. Who gives a rat's hiney that deep focus photography was used and that Orson Welles dug out floors to get those shots where we could see his crotch?
Casablanca also hasn't aged well. The shot of the plane flying over head and the background when Rick and Ilsa are driving are embarrassing. The Godfather is the greatest movie ever made...
