Summary: Disappointed
Review: I decided to write a review after finish watching the entire Season 1. This way, I can give a fair review.
The reason I bought this DVD set was because I enjoyed the movie version and saw the pilot episode. Since the rest of Season 1 was not available here in Japan, my only alternative was to get it here.
I was very disappointed. The script was really bad. I cannot believe Richard Dean Anderson said those lines which were supposed to be funny but in those situations he was in, it wasn't. In fact, it made him look really immature. The places that they visited all look like earth. It's hilarious to see them walk through the Gate assuming that all planets have oxygen like Earth. Sad to say, the series is a disappointed, even though I love SF.
I do appreciate that a series like this get released on DVD so that one can view the entire series without interruptions. So, if you are looking for a good series to collect, think twice. The content of the series isn't that great. Recommended only if you have the extra cash.

Summary: Awesome, just plain awesome.
Review: It's a rare treat to get a good sci-fi movie.
It's a very rare treat to get a good sci-fi television show.
And it is dang near impossible to have some studio or another take a good sci-fi movie; and later create a good,let alone SUPERIOR franchise in the form of a television "spin off".
Stargate SG-1 has managed to far exceed the limited scope of the movie that gave it life.
The creative team of Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich that brought us the Stargate motion picture, are very clear early in the commentary of that DVD(special edition), that they had nothing whatsoever to do with the SG-1 television show.
This is not a problem.
Most good television shows, when you go back and re-watch the first season, you will see very clear evidence of growing pains.
Actors finding their characters, writers finding their groove...
These guys had it nailed from the second episode.
Unreal.
To sum up-
16:9 or 1.78:1(enhanced for widescreen tv's) aspect ratio for all episodes, that we never get to see on tv.
Dolby surround, but not 5.1
Maybe on the following seasons?
21 episodes, which is the whole first season with the pilot.
A handfull of documentary/character study type interviews with various cast members.
And a really cool box.
Buy it, live it, love it.
Regret the fact that the show is maybe being move to another network.
Rejoice in the fact that the show had a good solid start of several years on a network willing to be bold.
Hope that more seasons are released soon on DVD.

Summary: Where's The Rest?
Review: I won't bother writing a review of this boxed set because it can be summed up in one word; BRILLIANT! ....well, maybe two words; TOTALLY BRILLIANT!Instead, I wanted somewhere to vent my frustration at not being able to get any information on boxed sets for the subsequent seasons! I have written to MGM directly and to various SG1 fan sites but nobody knows or can be bothered to respond to my enquiries so what's the score? Why don't MGM read these wonderful reviews and start delivering the goods? Don't they want to make millions more from truly satisfied customers like us? Ggggrrrrrrrrr!

Summary: SG-1: Awesome Entertainment
Review: The Stargate series is a creative, imaginative and truly entertaining series. There is plenty of action, great special effects, a lot of humor and great story lines. The series' producers have been able to work a great degree of realism into what is obviously a science fiction theme. The characters are great - loaded with great lines, drama, compassion and heroism.
I look forward to this weekly show on Showtime and was very pleased about finding a complete boxed set of the entire first season. Looking forward to MGM putting the other seasons on DVD also. Not sure why they are waiting - does anyone know why?
I hope MGM figures out how popular this series is and puts more seasons on DVD!

Summary: Excellent series, gets better each season!
Review: This series is excellent. And the first season was awesome. It comes with the pilot episode and a ton more. There's even an easter egg on the first disc. I just hope they start releasing the rest of the seasons on DVD... not sure what they're waiting for!

Summary: One of the lucky ones
Review: I live in the United Kingdom and was lucky that I purchased a multi region DVD player. The Stargate series is a joy to watch and I can not wait for series two to be released. When I find time to watch the Television I like to be able to escape into the moment and this series achieves this with apparent ease.

Review: MGM, of all studios, shows Paramount how to release a TV series on DVD with their first, and hopefully not last, installment of the Stargate SG-1 series. Not all episodes on this disc will impress those unfamiliar with the series, but it remains an effective introduction to this sci-fi phenomenon. (Note: The show's second season won't be available on DVD in North America until September 02. MGM made the announcement in the January 02 issue of their online sci-fi newsletter.) Fans of the show who have only seen Stargate SG-1 in syndication will notice certain added scenes in each episode -- especially the pilot. The episodes follow the less restrictive time frame in which they are first aired on the cable network Showtime. When the episodes are prepared to fit into a more restrictive time frame for airing in syndication, scenes are frequently removed. Each episode on this disc is presented in its filmed 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen ratio -- the disc has been incorrectly labeled as "standard." This will be an added bonus for fans as well, while filmed in anamorphic and aired in standard 1.33:1, the anamorphic presentation of each episode provides the show with a more film-like feel, but rarely does the wider aspect ratio add more to the content of the episode. Meanwhile, the audio on the disc is about as good as can be expected from a TV series. Each episode contains its stereo surround track with which it is broadcast. The true highlight of the audio track is the sweeping score, based on the original score from the film Stargate, found in each episode. Composer Joel Goldsmith does a tremendous job incorporating David Arnold's original score with new elements to present a unique, but truly "Stargate," soundtrack for the series. Voice and sound effect placement is pretty general which keeps all three forward soundstage speakers in constant use during each episode.
Extra content is virtually non-existent on these discs. One can consider the two additional episodes (not found the VHS release) and the widescreen aspect ratio used on the disc as extra content, but most will agree multi-episodic discs should be standard releases from studios. The video transfers from each episode suffer from an excessive amount of grain and picture noise, especially during scenes filmed in darker locations. Even with these image defects, the DVD looks better than the show does aired on television. Still, I can't help but think if MGM spent a little more time developing and mastering this disc, the image quality could have been vastly improved.
Also parents should note there is a scene, not aired in syndication, in the pilot episode containing full-frontal nudity. This is the only instance nudity found in any episode of the series, and does not involve sex, but was removed from the syndication version of the episode so it could be aired on non-cable television. In all fairness, MGM squeezed just about all the Stargate they could onto this disc collection. Fans of the series owe it to themselves to own a copy of this disc, while fans of the movie, and fans of science fiction in general, should give this disc a rental spin to see what they've been missing out on...

Summary: Great Series - Need to fix Disc 3 but still worth it
Review: Love this series, and yes disk 3 episode # 12 The Nox, is missing the voice of Apothis.
Everything else is there just his voice is missing.
Sure hope they put the rest of the series on DVD.

Summary: Stargate SG-1 is consistently fresh!
Review: This box set of Season 1 is very good. The writing on this show is superb and demonstrates the technical and scientific research that went into creating this innovative series. The actors are each brilliant in their ability to bring their characters to life, something which is rare in today's TV. Most of the episodes are individual stories, but the ongoing subplots and occasional cliffhangers allow the show to slowly evolve as the characters gain more and more knowledge of the universe. I highly recommend this set for any Sci-Fi fan. My only complaint would be a missing soundtrack element on one of the episodes from Disk 3. I don't think this my disk or player, since I returned the set and got a new one, and found two friends who have the same problem with their sets. This is a minor problem since you can still understand what is happening despite the missing dialogue (from only one character). Buy the set and you won't be disappointed.

Summary: Stargate SG1 Season One
Review: This is a great series and well worth obtaining. I'm 85% saticified with this box set, except for a couple of problems.
1.) The biggest problem is no 5.1 audio. A show that is this new should have been redubbed if not recorded in 5.1 audio to begin with. I have also just purchased Star Trek Next Generations first season and they are in 5.1.
2.) No English subtitles. I am friends with a deaf couple that enjoy the show but they can not watch these DVD's.
3.) I have found two episodes on two different dvd's that are missing part the their soundtrack. The music in the background is there but spokens words are not. I have tried these two disc's in 4 different machines and the problem is still there.
Other then these three problem these are must have is you are a fan. The 2.0 sound is very good, the bass is enough to rattle windows if you wish. The video transfer is top notch, with rich colors and deep black's.
With this set being a "test set" to see how well the box set will sell, MGM did not want to put forth a money on it. I think that this set deserves 5.1 audio. It was wonderful to watch this set, it could be GREAT with a 5.1 soundtrack. If MGM could only fix these three small problem's I think this setwould do alot better than it has.
