Summary: Enjoyable the first times, but kinda goes downhill.
Review: I have to agree with Michael Hardy (Jan 9, 2003). I absolutely loved this film the first couple of times I saw it, but over the years, I don't think it has worn than well. Some of the humor has become kind of old. It was an enjoyable romp, pure entertainment, but not much character development. I do wish they would have had more scenes between McCoy and Spock; what a great relationship that was.My favorite Trek movies are 2, 3, 4, and 8 (First Contact). (I couldn't even finish watching Insurrection, that last time I pulled out the tape.)

Summary: Star Trek 4
Review: I think I have seen this Star Trek movie more than any of the other ones. Why? Because it's so good! Leonard Nemoy did an outstanding job on this film. The plot about the crew having to find humpback whales in 1986 San Fran and going back in time to retrieve them was very original and really gave the sense of adventure even without the Enterprise at Kirk's command. Star Trek 4 is lighter and more comical than the last 3 movies and it is genuianly funny. Catherine Hick's of 7th Heaven fame stars as the whale biologist while Kirk tries to convince her to trust him and his crew to get the whales to bring back to the 24th century to save humanity from a destructive probe. The music to Star Trek 4 was great and the whole film was perfectly paced. This should entertain not only Trekkies but also people who aren't even fans of the franchise.

Review: this is the same lenth as the regular dvd called star trek the voyage home only dif is double dvd and extras not on other dvd .
so if u like extras like documentaries and such then this is worth the price otherwise the regular edition is the one too look for because the movie it's self is the same lenth.both 118 min long.

Summary: Fun movie, but flawed disc.
Review: The movie is funny and stands up as perhaps the most entertaining of the series. But Disc 2 in my set, the disc with the supplemental material, has a major flaw: the individual selection choices for b-t-s docs, etc., don't highlight. You can't really tell which item your remote is selecting. After a bit of trial and error you can maneuver through, but it takes quite a bit of experimenting. Perhaps other customers may or may not have had this problem. I know my DVD player works fine, so maybe this particular batch of discs is flawed. So keep a lookout for that. The material still plays (so far), but navigating through and selecting the material you want is VERY user-unfriendly. Hopefully most consumers won't encounter this problem, but surely I can't be the only one who has.

Summary: A movie so good, people forgot that it was Star Trek
Review: On the behind the scenes disc of this two DVD set, writer-producer Harve Bennett says that people have told him often that they never liked or never watched Star Trek, but that they sure liked that Star Trek movie that had the whales in it. This movie was so well written, directed and acted that, in my opinion, this will forever be the best Star Trek movie ever made. The premise of this movie is quite similar to the third Planet of the Apes movie, only it is done so much better. Seeing this movie on DVD made me think about how so many things that are in every Star Trek movie or TV episode AREN'T in this movie. There is no Enterprise, hardly anyone in the movie is wearing a Starfleet Uniform, and none of the crew knows if they'll be able to continue to have the job security they once knew, or a home to go back to that will still exist. Ditching the creature comforts of home works so well in this movie. The humor is great, the crew learn new expletives and finger gestures, and they of course get what they came for. The director's commentary on the DVD has Leonard Nimoy being way too hard on himself. For example, he says that he wishes that they could have done more with the scene with the Klingon ship they are traveling in when it goes back in time to the modern age to get the whales. I loved this scene -- what was wrong with it? The whole scene was great, the out of body perspective from Kirk's point of view, hearing faint bits of dialogue that come later in the movie, and an awakening into consciousness that they aren't where they once were. Great! The Behind the scenes DVD has plenty, and some that I think was meant for those who want to buy the entire series of Star Trek movies when they all come out on DVD with director's commentary, and behind the scenes documentaries as well. I have fond memories of this film. I remember that at the time this film came out in movie theaters, it was announced that there would be another Star Trek TV show, but without the original cast. I was disappointed. After seeing Star Trek IV, I thought no one could top the adventures of the original crew. I was wrong.

Summary: Much better than the original Star Trek IV DVD!
Review: This movie makes the original bare-bones, and much more expensive DVD release of Star Trek IV, obsolete. While the original film is there, the new commentaries, and bonus materials make the film much better. Gone is the old Leonard Nimoy intro tacked onto the so-called "Bonus Materials" section (it was made for the Paramount Director's series VHS/Laserdisc Release), here is more and much better bonus materials. The Voyage Home is my favorite out of the series. It's a delightful romp that places our heroes "Where No Man Has Gone Before". The movie puts our heroes into the 20th century, where they are so out of place. But they still manage to solve a problem. Highly recommended, even if you're not a trekkie.

Summary: Best supplemental package for Trek so far
Review: Great features. The commentary with Nimoy and Shatner is very entertaining, a few too many pauses creep in (especially towards the end), but still a lot of fun. I really got a kick out of the lengthy original interviews. Overall, a ton of supplemental material to check out and all of it worthwhile. The not so great news: Paramount should've put more effort into getting the movie to look as good as possible. There had to have been a more pristine print to transfer. As it is, the picture quality is acceptable, but probably the least impressive in the Special Edition series so far. The dirt speckles can get a bit annoying, and darker interior scenes look a bit murky.

Summary: Light-hearted Trek
Review: Definately the goofiest Trek film, but also one of the best. The classic Enterprise crew travels back in time in their "borrowed" Klingon spacecraft to capture a pair of humpback whales, which are needed to respond to a mysterious alien probe that is threatening Earth in the 23rd century. The cast has a very relaxed and polished interaction, honed over many years, and the plot is more successful than most at giving each cast member a chance to shine. It's occasionally a little too cute, but very entertaining overall.

Summary: The Most Popular But NOT my Favorite
Review: Though this is certainly a very good movie, my favorite is Wrath of Khan. The one sore point here is I think IV has the worst score of any of the films with the original cast. I have no problems with the DVD, and this is really in answer to stinky-but-nice's Feb 15 review. He is concerned about missing footage, but this must be a misprint in the official advertising and the box details, I have the DVD and rest assired, all 119+ minutes are there. So go buy it already/

Summary: The "Special" Voyage
Review: The Special Edition is 118 minutes. I've seen this movie a few times, and I believe in the Special Edition has a few prolonged scenes. Spock's computer test, Kirk's travel from the bridge to free Scotty and Gillian after the ship crashed in the water, seeing Scotty and Gillian travel towards the bridge to escape,and a couple of others. A grand total of perhaps 10-30 seconds of added footage.Of course, the Special features disk is incredible. About 3 ¹/² to 4 hours long of Star Trek IV behind the scenes info and interviews to fill your Trek thirst until the next Edition comes out.
