Summary: Things are about to get better
Review: In spite of its financial success, star trek 1 has always had major problems. They resulted from the fact that the movie was essentially unfinished, a rough edit dumped to meet a strict deadline. GOOD NEWS! Director Robert Wise has undertaken a major RE-EDIT of the film, including finishing of effects scenes never finished, revamping of the sound, dialogue, EVERYTHING!! With Paramount's support, he is finishing the one film of his hat has bothered him for years, because he never was allowed to finish it!!! Now if only they would do the same with Star Trek 5, and also produce a better DVD collection (i.e. ST2 with the extra footage and "Space Seed" episode, Generations with alternate ending and openning, etc....)

Summary: To seek out new life...
Review: In my opinion this is one of the best Star Trek's of all time- it's right up there with the pilot episode The Cage, Star Trek's II & III, The City On The Edge of Forever, Amok Time, Journey to Babel, Q Who?, Tapestry, and Year of Hell (Voyager). It's got a great musical score, great special effects, and a great story... a story which is enhanced by superb acting and intelligent dialogue. Some people might say this movie is boring, but they're probably the same people who thought 2001 was boring... I guess there aren't enought flying limbs or buckets of green ooze spattered everywhere.

Summary: Good Science Fiction but Tame "Star Trek"
Review: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is a visual feast. The film is filled with stunning space imagery and futuristic settings, but it is not "Star Trek". This first "Star Trek" film suffers from lack of character. The story is good but it lacks the sense of danger and humor that the series excelled at. It's still a worthy Trek entry it just feels a little flat. The film series gets better from here.

Summary: A SPIRITED BEGINNING!
Review: The journey that began the successful STAR TREK movie franchise is a glorious, but somewhat slow, beginning. The visual effects were top of the line for its time (they must have thought the same with STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER). With its huge budget, and a storyline taken from the original series, this one is a journey that all TREK fans will want to experience again and again, Grade: A

Summary: STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE - THE BEST ST MOVIE OF ALL!
Review: Out of all the STAR TREK movies this is my favorite. The acting and special effects are some of the best I have ever seen. In my opinion this movie is better then Star Wars but to be honest STAR TREK is BETTER than Star Wars!

Summary: This One Was Too Long
Review: Maybe if it were cramped into 1-1/2 hours it would have been better. Ok yeah the inside of V'Ger like cloud was pretty, I guess, if you like scenic tours. But they spent too much time with that in the movie, then followed by what seemed like wasting time till the final 10 minutes of the movie. The beginning of the film is great, seems to have a fast paced move to it, but it slows down way too much after halfway. This is the least favorite Star Trek film of mine, but I guess since it was made in '79, it not so bad. But Star Wars was in '77, and look how good they did. So I guess this one's not too great. If you love Star Trek, like me, you'll still watch it. If you are new to Star Trek, skip this film and go onto the 2nd film.

Summary: Great movie. Stunning F/X.
Review: I love this movie. As I do all the ST movies. This one is basically about a entity called V'GER which is destroying everything in it's path looking for it's creator. Great movie. I love the 40 minute secuence of the Enterprise exploring V'GER and the 3 or so minutes of the shots of the ship in drydock. This movie is a must see, but I don't recommend it to people with a simple mind though. (They'll get bored. There is no action whatsoever.) The only bad part was the uniforms, which they improved a lot in ST: II. I give ST: TMP *Stand five minutes in awe at V'GER* FIVE WONDERFUL STARS!!!

Summary: It's not a bad start for the movie series
Review: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" isn't really a bad start for the films, if one can get past the wooden acting, the bland sets and uniforms and the muddled storyline. Kirk and company are back on board the newly remodeled USS Enterprise to intercept an alien intruder named "V'Ger". That is about for the plot. The rest of the movie has the cast entering the alien and staring at it endlessly for around 50 minutes. It didn't really bother me, because I loved the special effects. The talking bothered me because I really had no idea what they were talking about throughout the movie. Something about V'Ger being a child and merging with the creator and so on and so forth. To me it didn't make much sense at all. One thing that makes this movie stand apart from it's successors is the music. Jerry Goldsmith's score is quite possibly one of the best scores ever put on film, this is definitely my favorite. Many people bash this movie but if it wasn't for this, you Next Generation fans wouldn't have your main theme and us fans of Star Trek wouldn't have 8 terrific sequels to watch.

Summary: The movie that sank like the Titanic
Review: This movie sank like the Titanic. The first 50 minutes were good. Then you start saying to yourself, "What am I doing in front of the TV?" The movie spent too much time inside the alien (V'Ger): It spent about 80 minutes in the alien. The problem was that they had nothing to do in that time segment.

When they tried to pull two people from the transporter (including the new science officer). When they said the people were going into final form, or something like that, you say, "Oh, wow. That's nice."

So basically, I don't think it was a good first movie.

Summary: An underrated film
Review: Now I can appreciate that a lot of people disliked this film for the wooden acting, which is certainly true. None of the performances were very good. However, as a film, it works astonishingly well. The special effects, most especially the interior of V'Ger are among the most imaginative ever. The only other movie that comes to mind regarding a voyage into the unknown is 2001(another movie with wooden acting). STTMP is a great feast for the eyes. There are few films that come close. It must be seen on widescreen to appreciate. And also, I much prefer the shortened version to the extended one. The latter includes the silliest scenes and ones that add little. A must see on widescreen.
