Summary: IT LOOKS OUTDATED!BAAAD QUALITY SPECIAL EFFECTS!
Review: When I first heard that they were doing a special edition I thought to myself about time because most of the ST films special effects looked terribly outdated.I have always liked the storylines, even though the Next Generation ones were a bit too dramatical and far too serious they were excellent in thier own way.

The motion picture which holds good memories with me for a longtime,I thought would end up looking like Star Wars special edition. However it ended up looking the same and the additional footage is nothing much to brag about,I'd wish they used the money for those new scenes on the old ones to perfect them.

I feel cheated !The films opening scene with the Klingon ships are so evident of poor quality special effects it hurts my feelings, and the Spoks' chase into the V'ger also looks bad. What a waste but the marketing campain deserve to work with Richard Donner who also made his classic Superman DVD movie with just additonal scenes and digital sound did nothing to improve the image quality of the movie.

Summary: Enhancements are always good - but too many cuts.
Review: As the other reviews will tell you, the enhancements are great. Computer graphic additions and improvements/changes/additions to the sound effects make this a great remake. It could have been five stars, but someone should have told Mr. Wise that "director's cut" doesn't necessarily mean "cut it". He should have created a "special edition" DVD and not tried so hard to shorten the movie. There were some major scenes completely removed and alot of other scenes got little cuts in them. Viewers are used to the full length version. Remember the scenes they chopped back out of Star Trek II? This is similar - only worse. I hope whenever they get around to making the special edition for Star Trek II, they "Wise" up and put the scenes back in this time.

Summary: Two Stars for Movie, 4 Stars for Okuda Commentary
Review: First let me state that I love Star Trek, particularly the original series. And I really liked most of the other movies...even III and V had their moments (okay, I'm pushing it with V, but II and IV were great, and VI was pretty darn good). That being said, I have to say my reaction to this movie is much the same as when I saw it in 1979 - dull, dull, dull. It has a few interesting ideas, and is very pretty visually. But there is simply too much time spent with the characters looking in awe at the V'ger cloud, and very little of what made Star Trek popular among its fans. The "Director's Cut" is generally better than the original and 1983 (T.V. version) release, but there is only so much that re-editing can do. There are many promising elements - its a shame that the series Star Trek Phase II was cancelled in lieu of this movie. I think the series could have been much better. That being said, I still highly recommend this DVD for Trek fans - mostly for Okuda's text commentary. I found that very interesting throughout, even though the movie itself is worse than Voyger the T.V. series.

Summary: It's a better movie now!
Review: I've never been a big fan of ST TMP. I remember sitting in the theater when it was first released and thinking to myself, "Come on, I have to like this movie." Unfortuantely it didn't seem to get any better as I watched. In fact, I have always thought it was too long and a bit dull. Even the colors used for uniforms, sets, and lighting, added to the bland taste of the entire movie. Certainly all the re-introductions of the ship and characters had to be done I suppose but it made for a very slow movie. But here we have the new DVD Version!!! With newly added scenes and a reworked score, it's really a better movie now! This is one example of how music can affect the momentum of a movie and its story. The enhanced score gives the movie a much needed boost. The new images of the V'ger ship at the end is a nice touch along with other added effects. Of course, the quality of DVD is light years ahead than any seen on video. I took a second to play a little of my video copy and there is simply no comparison. So I highly recommend this version. It it is now very watchable and like me, I think you will be able to even tolerate those silly dull pajama-like uniforms.

Summary: A beautiful film
Review: The original release of this film was rushed to meet production deadlines, and as a result it was an editing nightmare. However, with this "directors cut" that problem has been solved. The plotline makes more sense and some bad acting shots (like Sulu staring wide-eyed into the camera and gulping alot) have been cut. The story is thoughtful and intelligent and has more the essence of the original series. Later films tended to be more star wars-ish and built around space battles. The new FX scenes have given it an epic feel and made it by far the most beautiful of the series to look at. I only wish this cut could have been shown in theatres. It would be awesome on a big screen. Suffice to say this: I did not regret forking out the moolah to purchase this DVD and consider it one of the best in my collection. It is the best justification Ive yet seen for making 'directors cuts'.

Summary: So totally worth the money
Review: Once you say that THIS is the version of the movie the director really wanted...what else is there?
Re-mastered audio, special effects added to MATCH the original 1979 version(so they don't ruin the continuity), and the first damn time you could buy it in a decent format(sorry LD owners), full running commentary by the director and hours of documentaries.
I own over 200 DVD's; and I must say that this is one of the few that has lived up to my expectations of what a DVD can be.

Summary: No longer "Star Trek the slow Motion Picture"
Review: I do not know what else to say but excellent, superb, fantastic, Star Trek The Motion Picture is finally a movie I can watch over and over again! It moves right in to the next thing quickly and smoothly..... The added effects were beautifully done and the editing was right on.
I loved this movie from start to finish, it was like getting to see the original crew in one more film, and I loved every minute of it. I was hoping to see Enterprise NX-01 in the rec room when Decker showed Ilia the other ships named Enterprise, that opportunity was either overlooked or not enough time to get it in there before the DVD release. But that would have made this movie 100% flawless.
This is now by far my very favorite Trek Movie (...)
If you do not have this DVD, you must get it! Rather you are a Trek fan or not, now everyone will enjoy it. Robert Wise is .. Wise, he did exactly what needed to be done. (...)

Summary: BORING
Review: I hadn't seen this movie in about 15 years and really couldn't remember why I didn't like it before. I bought this hoping that I would be surprised and enjoy the movie. I like all the star trek movies except for this one. It puts me to sleep when i watch it. It is bogged down with all the special effects they experimented with on this movie. The shots in outer space are just too long and should have been cut down. It seems like there are moments in the movie that last near 10 minutes with no dialog, but just the crew looking and reacting to what they see in space. VERY BORING. The dvd is nicely done with plenty of extras including deleted scenes, some of which would have made the movie more fun if included. Don't waste your time with this movie, buy one of the other star trek movies instead.

Summary: Stellar re-working
Review: I admit that The Motion Picture is not the best offering of the classic Trek movies. However, it did relauch the franchise. I was thrilled by the alterations in the audio (adding echoing to certain scenes, reworking certain ship sounds, replacing the obnoxious mechinical computer voice for red alerts and announcements over the PA) and new visual scenes. When the Enterprise blows up the asteroid in the worm hole, you get a whole new view, as well many others. Also, the video looks to have been enhanced to bring out more detail. I've heard that Paramount is considering reworking all of the clasic Trek films with similar upgrades. I sincerely hope they do so. Just as this movie relauched the franchise, this DVD relaunches this movie. I'll watch it more often now. Hope you will too.
