Summary: Different kind of Star Trek
Review: Why is this different from the previous Star Trek movies? Because there's a humorous element you won't find on their other movies. The crew of the Enterprise returns to 20th century Earth to bring back humpback whales (which were extinct in the 23rd Century) because of a probe unintentionally destroying the earth thanks to losing contact with the whales. The humor surfaces because of the crew of the Enterprise trying to adjust to 20th century customs, which they find to be, as Kirk said, "a primitive and paranoid culture". There's a couple scenes I really love, like the punk rocker (played by Kirk Thatcher) in the bus who refuses to turn down the radio, so Spock gives him a Vulcan neck pinch. It's also interesting to know the song played on the radio owned by the punk on bus was actually sung by Kirk Thatcher himself! Another of my favorite was Dr. McCoy attempting to save Chekov at the hospital and he gets really angry at the doctors because he thinks that 20th centure medicine is "medievalism". It's definately a fun Star Trek movie to watch, but the problem I have with the Star Trek legacy is it's been thoroughly rubbed in the dirt, thanks to too many TV series spinoffs, like Deep Space Nine, but I always have been a fan of the original Spock, Kirk, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov Star Trek, and of all the Star Trek movies I have seen, this one is my favorite.

Summary: Fun, fascinating, and it tells an interesting issue!
Review: For many fans, even my mom and I, this is a good entry in the "Star Trek" movies! It is very entertaining, and the crew of the Enterprise bring out some good laughs with this movie! Within the 23rd century, Earth falls under attack by an alien probe that is trying to find information about the extinct species called humpback whales. With time sort of running out Admiral Kirk and his crew time-travel back to the late 20th century to save the 2 known living humpbacks (George and Gracie) and bring them back to save the future. At the time of this movie, the humpback species were indeed on the verge of extinction by whalers, but in a way this movie played a big part in helping to speak out about it. By my understanding the species is still alive, and well, and indeed will prosper hopefully into the 23rd century. Great special effects, good story, and great characters, Star Trek does indeed prosper for all to see.

Summary: Arguably the Best of the Original Series Films
Review: I'm sure fans of Star Trek will forever debate which of the many films inspired by the show was the greatest. It must be admitted by all that this fourth movie is definitely right up there. The thing that really sets this movie apart from other Star Trek films is how accessable it is to those who aren't fans of the series or even science fiction in general. By giving significant screen time to a character who makes fun of the "space men" and their erronious claim to have traveled back in time, the movie allows the series to laugh at itself, something it hadn't done previously. A great Star Trek film and unlike some the others a great movie in general.

Summary: The funniest, and most accessible Trek film
Review: This is the Trek movie that even people who don't like Trek movies enjoy. A heartwarming if preposterous tale that has our intrepid crew going back in time to 1986 to find some whales, who it turns out, are the key to saving the world circa 2282, this fun frolic in San Fran has tons of laughs, great interplay among the cast and lots of campy but good moments.

Summary: The end to the unknown Trek Trilogy
Review: Most people fail to realize that there is an unkown trilogy in the Trek series. (Now at nine movies, and ten is being produced) In ST2, the theme was Admiral Kirk wanting to get the command of a starship. Obviously in that movie, Spock dies. That set up ST3. Admiral Kirk and his friends steal the USS Enterprise, and thus become criminals and trators to the Federation. Kirk does this to save spock (which he does), but ends up on Vulcan for a long time. In ST4, We pick up at Vulcan. Spock has to learn everything again (logic, and many other stuff), Admiral Kirk polls the crew and decides to go back to Earth and face charges by the Federation, and serve obvious Jail time.
As he is set to come back, a probe enters Earth's orbit and begins to suck up all the water on the planet. Evidently, they are searching for a species that they have been speaking with for centuries. The humpback whale. Yes, apparetnly the sounds of the whales went through space and met up with some alien out there. Kirk decides that he must save earth, and goes back in time to retreave a whale. He goes from 2282 to 1986. Humor abounds when Kirk has to hide Spock's ears, and claim that he is just on "LDS". Very funny stuff. Anyway, they return to the 23rd Century, and release the whale, and they talk to the probe, and the probe leaves. Boom, earth saved by Kirk again. (As he did in ST1)
He still must face trial though. At the trial, Kirk is punished, but not as badly(i mean come on, he just saved the earth!) He gets demoted in rank and becomes Captin of the USS Enterprise-A. The story ends, Kirk is back in starfleet, is back as a Captin, thus ending the whole story that started in ST2. This is the best of the little trilogy though, and is a must buy. Very good film.

Review: Star Trek IV:the Voyage Home is one of the best Star Trek movies in the film series! The plot starts where Star Trek III left off. Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the Enterprise prepare to leave the planet Vulcan with the newly rebirthed, Captain Spock(Leonard Nimoy). They are prepared to face the consequences for disobeing Starfleet command orders, stealing the late Starship Enterprise, traveling to the Gensis planet without permission and rescuing Spock. Unknown to the crew a space orbitng prob enters Federation space. The signals from the prob are interfering with Federation ships and technology. All starfleet ships lose power, lifesupport, and is motionless. the prob is heading straight toward Earth and the signal is directed to Earth's Oceans. As the Enterprise crew travels to Earth they recieve a Message given by the President of the United Federation of Planets. Kirk askes Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) to change the frequencey and Density of the prob to see what it would sound like in Earth's Oceans. Spock recoginzes this sound and moniters it further. Spock says"They are the sound of Humpback Whales." Since Humpback Whales are extinct in the 23rd Century they have no hope of stoping the prob before it destroys the Earth. Their only hope is to travel to the late 2Oth Century of Eath's past to find two Humpback whales to communicate to the probe. In the 2Oth Century, Kirk and Spock meet up with Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) who is a Marine Biologist and is tour guide to a San Franciso Aquarium. James Kirk convines Gillian Taylor to take her and two of her humpack whales to the 23rd Century. This is one of the Best Star Trek Movies of the series! It is very humorous, delightful, and sends a message about an important social issue. This is a really outstanding film directed by Leonard Nimoy! at the very end is the Best part, The first apperance of the new Starship, Enterprise. at the end the Enterprise crew is on the Bridge and Kirk says"Let's see what she's got!" The Enterprise moves a way from Spacedock to warpspeed. I recommend this film so much! Highly recommended!

Summary: A save the whales campaign?
Review: I'm a diehard Trek fan: seen every episode of the original series, every episode of TNG, some here and there of DS9, and many episodes of Voyager. I'm not sure ST IV is really Trek. I mean there are no villains, no excitement, no action, almost no special effects (in the traditional sense, I mean), and the plot we end up with is: time travel back to 1986 San Francisco to save the whales. I mean couldn't they have crossed up gangsters or something along the way? Why the whales is obvious from the first 15 minutes of the movie, but it's hokey. Unique about it is that everyone is off doing their own thing in this one; examples, Kirk toys with a possible love interest while Spock is attempting to become more human. Spock swears very mildly in highly inappropriate circumstances: someone will ask him a question, and he'll reply with something like, "The hell I did" (Spock doesn't understand sarcasm in these scenes). It's good for a laugh considering Spock, and much of the movie is good for a laugh, but that's about it. Of course, the scene on the bus is a classic. Really, though, whether or not you liked them, parts I, II, and III are hardcore Trek (and my favorites of the series). Part IV is sort of a low comedy diversion mainstreamed for sit-com type audiences while simply acknowledging Trekkers. I don't dislike it and I don't love it, so 3 stars it gets. The DVD is good - 2.35:1 widescreen (as movies should be), chapter stops, a trailer, and a featurette with Nimoy. Add it to your collection if you haven't seen it, at the worst you'll be indifferent to it.
