Summary: Don't Get LOST
Review: It adds up like this: special effects plus art direction minus a plot equals ZERO. What a mess of a movie! It's all "eye candy" -- it looks great but there's no real substance. The script is a collection of uninteresting, unclever homages to better movies and TV shows ("E.T.", "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Alien", "The Waltons", etc.) mixed in with boring and predictable dialogue. There aren't even any characters worth rooting for: the Robinsons have been turned into a 1990's dysfunctional family, each of whom is obnoxious. Major West has become a sexist clod; Dr. Smith has lost his campy edge; even the robot is a bore. The ending credits can't come too soon, and unfortunately they're ruined by a loud and ugly theme song.Admittedly, the DVD edition offers a beautiful transfer and has some neat extras. The theatrical trailer is a lot better than the movie itself, and the interviews with cast members from the 1960's TV series bring back warm and nostalgic memories, as well as a reminder of what the big screen version could and should have been ... but isn't.

Summary: Great DVD, OK Movie
Review: I can't deny that this is fun to watch on DVD. Crystal clear and good use of surround. But the story and character development is a sagging point. If you're not fussy about story but love FX, this one's for you. I go back to it often because it has a lot of good extra features which keeps the content fresh.

Summary: Some things really should stay Lost
Review: Oh dear. I really want to write something nice about Lost In Space, but I just can't. It had everything going for it: a good cast and some fantastic special effects. It's just the rest of it that makes you cringe. For starters, Lost In Space is suffering a severe identity crisis. At the beginning we have a rip-roaring opening sequence, which leads onto an interesting segment after they get lost about a ship infested with mechanical spiders, which is great for everybody. It then slides downhill with a slushy, sentimental middle section and an ending which has you wondering what age group it's aimed at. It's trying to be a family film as well as an action-packed sci-fi movie, and the two just don't gel - it's like trying to splice the Matrix with a Disney movie. You could almost see Matt LeBlanc and Gary Oldman struggling to make something out of their lines, but in the latter part of the film LeBlanc seemed to find it easy to slip back into his "cuddly Joey" role from Friends. The dialogue is pretty stilted, the characters somewhat cliched and to be honest, this is a script I was longing to take Tippex and a pen to. And I have to ask someone this: what was the point of that annoying yellow creature which seemed to be stuck in for no reason whatsoever?

Summary: You'll get lost too; this movie is difficult to understand
Review: This film is chock-full of expensive graphics and special effects, but the story is difficult to follow and comprehend once the Jupiter 2 spaceship is launched from earth. It's extremely pretentious, but not the least bit intellectually stimulating. Fans of the original TV show won't be able to relate to all these new faces playing the parts of the Robinsons, Major West, and Dr. Smith. This movie presents an all-new, more sophisticated scenario which makes the television series look cheap and crude and even has June Lockhart, Mark Goddard, Marta Kristen, and Angela Cartwright appearing in cameo roles near the beginning; but the story is uneven, inconsistent, and difficult to understand with only one viewing of this video. If you're looking forward to being entertained, you're probably in for a big disappointment.

Summary: Overall, an entertaining film
Review: With such a great cast, I figured this film would be considerably better than it was. The acting wasn't bad, but definitely confined by a not-so-great script. Taken as a whole though, this is a very entertaining movie for the whole family to watch. There are a lot of special effects here, and all of them are very well done. This movie on DVD is great. The picture is crystal clear, and there is excellent use of Dolby 5.1 Surround. There's also a lot of additional content on the disc which should appease fans of the original TV series. My recommendation would be to rent this one before deciding to buy it. It's not everyone's cup of tea.

Summary: Dragged against my will to see it- and disappointed.
Review: Why did I feel like I have seen this movie before? Because I have. I contained all the recycled elements of other- and better sci-fi movies like Star Wars, Aliens, Star Trek, E.T. etc. There wasn't a new thought in this movie. My husbands excuse was that it had to follow so many other sci-fi movies. So then why make another one, especially if you're not going to say anything new. There are some good performances, though: William Hurt as the distant, but focused father, Mimi Rogers, as the tough and loving mom and wife, Gary Oldman, as a very literate villian (some of the best lines in the movie and best delivered lines for a villian), surprisingly Matt LeBlanc playing the Hans Solo or Bruce Willis type role, reluctant hero. The boy Will Robinson was pretty good but the adult Will seemed like Eric Stolz on drugs. Wasted performances: Penny and Dr. Robinson. What was the purpose of the chameleon alien? And did the plot leave open the possibility of a sequel? Please, not another one unless it's like Aliens- better than the original.

Summary: Can't you just have FUN at a movie?
Review: I know I'm in the minority, but I thought LIS was a lot of fun. Yeah, the plot was full of cliches, but the cast did a good job and of course the fx (except for the unforgiveable monkey thing) were top-notch. I think it would have done better if it were released as a summer movie (the film came out in April of 1998). Why? Because, in general, audiences are less demanding of summer movies. At the very least, Lost in Space is a good family film. And Matt LeBlanc was so great, I hope he'll get another chance to show a more serious side in another movie. Lost In Space was hardly perfect, but it's also not nearly as bad as many people would have you believe.

Summary: Kid's movie
Review: I was really looking forward to see this movie as I like to watch science-fiction movies and Gary Oldman performing. But it came out differently. This film is about a dysfunctional family, but unfortunately the whole film is dysfunctional. A lot of cliché's and (unwilling?) references to other movies and tv shows. Spider Smith looked like a combination of 'Darth Vader' and 'Death' in Bergman's 'The Seventh Seal'. The spider aliens looked like they crawled out of 'Alien'. Time travelling is explained better in comical series like BBC's 'Red Dwarf'. The robots looked like upgraded version of the robots in 'Dr Who', resulting in a slapstick kind of movie. Hypergates and virtual reality didn't bring anything new. Matt LeBlanc looked like Tom Cruise flew his jet fighter straight in this picture. Soundtrack by Apollo 440. Probably chosen because of their name, but at least they got the sound good. This mission really sucked. I hope they weren't serious about making that sequel.
