Rating: Summary: Good story overidden by needless gore Review: There's nothing wrong with taking the concepts from "Alien" and building on them in a different direction, after all if we really liked "Alien" we'd welcome more stuff like it, right? This movie had the potential to do that... but instead chose the low road of excessive blood and gore. The idea of coming up with a way to defeat the laws of physics and where it might get you is intriguing- but people being dissected alive and blowing up from a bad case of the bends (decompression) is overdone and boring... rent but don't buy this one.
Rating: Summary: Wow. Review: Many of the people I know hated this movie. Me? Well, I was scared in the marrow of my bones. While some of the "horror" scenes were overwrought, the acting under par (especially Sam Neil). this movie touched a chord in me that caused all the hairs on my body to stand on end for days. Like "In the Mouth of Madness", "Event Horizon" brought a cosmic and overwhelming fear to some of its viewing audience, while others saw schlock. All in all, I think its damn good. If you enjoy H.P. Lovecraft or Brian Lumley or thought Carpenter's "The Prince of Darkness" was scary, this movie is for you.
Rating: Summary: Good movie, but the DVD needs more extras. Review: Contrary to what many people may think, I actually liked this movie. I was scared by it, and was intrigued by the idea of a ship that accidently goes to hell and back. It's not a masterpiece, because there was little character development. Yet, it has the ability to freak you out with bizarre flash and strobe cuts, much of which reminded me of what it's like to watch an MTV music video. I own the laserdisc(basically because I can't watch a movie unless it's in widescreen), and my cousin owns the DVD. The DVD is great, well, sort of. The transfer is very sharp and the colors stand out. My own laserdisc can't match the power of the DVD. However, whenever you buy a DVD, you expect a lot of extras. Pretty much all they included was a trailer. I would've thought they included at least an audio commentary, or some interviews, like the ones I've seen on the internet. Basically, the reason for owning the DVD is for good picture, sound, and letterbox format. They should sell the tapes in widescreen for people who don't own laserdisc or DVD players. Of course, if they did that, the DVD probably wouldn't sell much, now would it?
Rating: Summary: Vacuum cleaners aren't the only things that suck! Review: I love movies. I'm patient, with them. The most thrilling and wonderful part of this movie was when it blacked out and said "THE END". The movie SUCKED! IT WAS SO LAME. Boring, and was more of a comedy than horror. Given, it was a tad disturbing, but it was predictable. AND, may i add the ending (last 10 seconds) were way too confusing. Will it happen again, or is it over? If God forbid, there was a sequel, it will come out along with Karate Kid 17. The movie was boring as the Hell they show you.
Rating: Summary: 100% Pure Horror Review: I found Event Horizon to be 100% Pure Horror. Granted, it's a little slow moving; however, when you finally found out where the Event Horizon had gone and returned from (hell of course!) and what had happened to her crew you really start feel a lot more scarred because it's that point in time during the show all hell breaks loose. Hell is truly vicious after you see this movie. This movie makes your concept of hell look really tame!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing. Things happened for no reason. No depth. Review: I was disappointed in this movie. It could have been so much more. A guy goes through a black hole, we guess. He returns catatonic. So, what did he experience? We never find out. The ship is evilly alive(???). No explanation other than *it* went to the other side and returned that way. The alternate Universe is pure chaotic evil? Pure chaotic evil couldn't last. It makes no sense. What happened to the old crew? Only scattered fragments of illogically inane horror tell that story. Most of the crew dies, and I don't really care about anyone anyway. I end up rooting for the evil guy just because I like the actor.
Rating: Summary: A good evening ruiner. Review: I saw this film a year ago, and I STILL have trouble sleeping at night. This is the bleakest, darkest, most terrifying film I have ever seen. The Paramount logo at the beginning is basically the only positive moment in the movie. I still can't get past some of the images in the film, and I can't believe they didn't make additional edits to get an R rating. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed movies like ALIEN, Hellraiser and the Shining. But this film really hits you like a mental bullet to your psyche. After about the first hour, it stops becoming entertainment. Good cast, good concept, but a lack of emotional balance (i.e. little humor, too much gore) make the execution not so good. On the other hand, good soundtrack by Michael Kamen and Orbital, as well as cinematography by Adrian Biddle (who worked on ALIENS). Watch this moving on a hot summer day, then go sit in wide open field and tell yourself everything's going to be allright!
Rating: Summary: two hours of my life that i want back Review: most movies this awful are at least funny for that reason. event horizon? not even once."come to papa bear"? WTF? i swore i'd never see another lawrence fishburne movie [sam neill's not credible enough an actor to hold accountable for anything; at least fishburne could have afforded to turn down the part]; then he did Matrix.
Rating: Summary: Surprising Horror and Sleep Loss Review: Scarry, this is THE first movie I've seen in a LONG time that actually scarred me, yes an adult scared by a movie. I saw it late at nite, and that was a mistake, you will not sleep well. I like the recommendation of another reviewer "watch a comedy after" good idea. As for the science fiction aspect of the movie, I think that's why some were turned off, it had such EXQUISITE beutiful sets, very effective, but not as the adventure StarTrek/StarWars as usual stereotype the critics thought they were going to see. It turns out, for those of you who were smart and open-minded enough to stay to see the whole movie, that this movie is a cerebral thriller, it explores lightly but effectively, the gorry frightning aspect of madness and even the concept of "hell". "Where were going you won't need eyes", the latin touch added an extra chill. A tip for families, this movie is NOT for young kids.
Rating: Summary: "Hell" is just a word ..The reality is much much worse." Review: An insanely scarry movie. It has the futuristic spaceship with the backwards Latin, gore, and memorable quotes that you can expect from any great horror movie. Although for some odd reason I kept expecting Sam Neil's head to rotate on his shoulders and scream "HEEEERE'S JHONNY!!"
