Summary: Garbled in translation
Review: .... Most of the dialogue is hard to comprehend with the voice talent trying to make their larynxes stretch to cover the cartoon characters. (A noted exception is the Death character who would steal the show with more screen time.) Some humor comes through but kids will have a hard time sitting through its nearly 2.5 hour length.

I love Pratchett's books and think he's one of the wisest people living right now, and I generally do not like book-to-film adaptations, much less book-to-animation.
I didn't love this adaptation right off the bat. I speak Midwestern American English and my ears took awhile getting used to the "Ramtop" accents - the same as watching Shakespeare performed by British actors using appropriate accents. Granny, Nanny, and Magrat don't sound like Elves from Lord of the Rings, but they DO sound like English country women.
It takes a bit of getting used to, but the adaptation is brilliant, from the intro shot of Great A'Tuin to the feral woodland creatures at the end.
It may not be quite what you expect - but if you check your assumptions at the door you will probably enjoy this adaptation of Pratchett's genius.

Review: anything & everything discworld is always good. discworld on dvd is better! Discworld animation that stays true to the characters and the books is EXCELLENT!The casting of Jane Harrocks to voice Magrat (she's played Bubble from AbFab & the voice of Babs in "Chicken Run,") and Christopher Lee as the voice of Death was just too cool!

Summary: Let me relive the saga in a complete new way
Review: As a rabid fan of the discworld series, I'm happy to report that this video was completely faithful to the book. It isn't just a flat re-enactment, though. The film, for me anyway, managed to really transform these three characters into something more than two dimensional. Particular attention is paid to facial expressions - I was VERY impressed with Granny Weatherwax here. In the books I never really liked her much - I pictured her with a permenant stony expression and short, clipped voice. She is much the same in the film, but there are several key moments where her eyes soften and a hint of a smile plays on her lips. These small details add a tremendous amount to the character. I found myself suddenly really *liking* this character, as opposed to just feeling pity for her as I did in the books. The same level of detail can be found in the other characters - but I was amazed at the level of complexity Granny took in this film. As for the animation, it's nothing to write home about. It's smooth and beautifully drawn, but it's hardly up to today's standards. This isn't a major quibble, since the film is more concerned with character and story then visual "wow" factor. Not that there aren't a few of those. There's a computer generated Great A'Tuin at the beginning that's pretty impressive, and one scene where a demon is conjured up that had me saying "Now that's pretty darn cool" no less then five times. Pratchett's stories are generally dialogue-driven and this is film's weakest point. The film follows the book almost word for word, and there are several moments in the film where these characters seem to talk *forever*. I'm a big fan of Pratchett's dialogue, but I think a bit of editing could have been a Good Thing. Another small quibble is that the characters' NAMES are rarely mentioned. I had to constantly remind my uninitiated friend who the characters were. Oh, and CMOT Dibbler and the Librarian make cameo appearances. I don't remember if they did in the book.

Summary: Wyrd Sisters, good as a collectable
Review: As an avid Terry Pratchett fan I was very pleased to see his work come to the screen. The movie follows the book to the T. However sadly the mood and personalities that Terry Pratchett creates so well is lost. His books have been the only that I have enjoyed re-reading, but I have been able to watch this only once. The characters come off dry and methodic. This DVD is definately worth to collect for Disc World fans, but don't expect to impress anyone into picking up the book because of the movie.

Review: At long last the Discworld comes to the small screen; in this the first North American release of the Brit TV series. All the humour and brilliant dialogue of the novel translated very well to this visual medium. Character visuals while not always quite as I imagined, still carried off the right impression. Voice casting is superb and included both Christopher Lee (as Death, of course!) and Jane Horrocks. I can't wait until Reaper Man and Soul Music are released to hear Chris Lee in a featured role. No the animation is not state of the art, but still manages to exceed the basic needs of the story. This isn't about slick animation, but superb dialogue and inventive storytelling. It is about time that we got to see these brilliant stories and imaginatively crafted characters realized on screen. Buy this video and show your support of the Discworld series. If sales on this are good, we'll likely see more released in the near future.

Summary: Read the books instead!
Review: Being a BIG Terry Pratchett fan doesn't change the fact that the animation is terrible, and the characters lack the details that make them Esme, Gytha and Magrat. All the subtleties are gone.
The look of the witches is all wrong; Granny Weatherwax is not intimidating, Nanny Ogg is not naughty, and Magrat, for some reason, is sexy. Of course Christopher Lee is going to be brilliant for Death-- who else would you pick?! But if the rest of the visuals become painful to watch, and the witches are flat, then the video is a waste of time. Read the books!

Review: Bought the DVD. I was very pleased that unlike most other novels turned to movies You could follow the whole thing in the book and still laugh out loud. I was rather disappointed with some of the voice casting. Instead of bugger being bugger it came out booger. Lets clean it up folks. My biggest regret is we could not get the very first books done From The Light fantastic forward. It would have been much more entertaining and offer others an opportunity to enjoy in visual what others like me have read and thoroughly enjoyed. To sum up " WE WANT MORE DISCWORLD!

Summary: Buy this or Granny will turn you into a toad
Review: Christopher Lee as Death. If for nothing else, this is worth owning. Good animation and character designs, keeps all the important plot points, and if you don't blink you'll see CMOT Dibbler and the Librarian. All told, a fine adaptation...now release Soul Music! And yes, Nanny sings the hedgehog song.

Review: Everyone seeems to be complaining about the animation style. For what they were trying to do the animtion was perfect. What if they animated it so it looked like it was just a matter of time before Lady Felmet was hit on the head with an anvil? Any way, it was wonderful, and when I read the other ones about the witches (Lords and Ladies, Witches Abroad Carpe Jugulum etc.) I can imagine the voice actors saying the lines.
It's about a coven of witches who are trying to get the true king on the throne, as the one they have at present murdered the last one. Sadly, The real heir is a baby, and it's fathers ghost bugs them a lot.
