Summary: Typical end-of-summer movie
Review: Unlike some other reviewers, I knew going in that the only thing this film had with the original was that a man crash-landed on a planet ruled by apes. I also knew that studios release their best films at Christmas and around Memorial Day, meaning that this was not anticipated by the studios to be their best but could pull some of the remaining summer audience with good trailers.The story was a mixed bag. The overall concept of the new movie is intriguing, but not fully explored. Time after time I watched opportunities for development go for naught. That explains many of the reviews describing the characters as flat. Perhaps the biggest failing of the movie was not lengthening the finished version to develop some subplots. As it is, there are virtually none. It also suffers from predictability. While there were some twists that caught me by surprise, a number of them could be seen well before they were revealed on screen. And some plot twists were just plain out of the blue, such as some changing of deep-seated allegiances for some characters with very little justification. Some of the characterizations were incredible. I particularly enjoyed seeing ape mannerisms well-incorporated. Watching some of the ape society was almost like watching a National Geographic special. Body language and social mannerisms for dominance were extremely well done - especially Thade. Put those mannerisms with the individual make-up and one could almost believe you were seeing a society of intelligent apes. If you want to enjoy this film, don't expect the Super-Blockbuster promised by the trailers and don't expect a souped-up version of the original. In fact, it's best if you completely disassociate this film from the original. Go see it for the film it IS with no other expectations. And if you're really concerned about spending that much on a so-so movie, make it a reduced price matinee.

Summary: Good movie, but not as good as the original.
Review: This movie was very good but i was hoping it would have Kim Hunter playing a part in it and she was not in it. This is no sequal to Battle for the Planet of the Apes but a remake of Planet of the Apes, the ending was almost as shocking as the first movies ending. I hope they make a sequal to it that will star Kim Hunter in it! If you liked or did not like the original movie, still see this!The first movie had a better storyline to it but you must see this movie! As the Apes say: RULE THE PLANET!!!

Summary: Pierre Boulle's classic fantasy re-imagined--amazing!
Review: When 'The Haunting' flopped at the box office while the ultra-low budget 'Blair Witch Project' became all the rage, it was a prime example of how the most sophisticated high-tech special effects don't guarantee a good remake of a classic movie (or, for that matter, any other movie). Consequently, I expected much the same when I heard of the 'Planet of the Apes' remake: today's advanced effects, prettier actors perhaps, and essentially expensive rehash. Tim Burton's version of the classic epic is a pleasant surprise. Sure enough, the movie does have dazzling special effects--the most impressive beyond a single doubt Rick Baker's ape makeup. And the actor's are, for the most part, new-millennium pretty (even some of the apes). But the story has also been completely and compellingly re-imagined and re-created. This is a new tale which has little in common with the original movie except that they are both based on Pierre Boulle's book--and that they are both excellent. The attention to (often hilarious) detail in Tim Burton's movie is delightful, and for those who remember the original 'Planet of the Apes' well enough, there are also a few pleasantly twisted nods to the classic to discover. The story moves along at a brisk pace and never fails to involve, making the movie seem shorter than it is, and the plot surprises in intelligent ways during the final part of the action. Another wonderful thing to observe is how well the makeup allows the actors behind it to bring their characters to life. While the masks in the original films were impressive, they allowed for little more than moving mouths and the occasional twitching nose. The masks in the new movie, on the other hand, accommodate a seemingly unlimited range of facial expressions. It takes more imagination to picture that there are human faces behind the makeup than it does to accept the simian characters as genuine. This new 'Planet of the Apes' is not so much a remake, but an original movie based on the same novel that inspired the first one. A strong story, solid characters, AND amazing special effects, that's the stuff the 'suspense of disbelief' is made of. Let's just hope it won't suffer from the same sequel-itis as the original.

Summary: Excellent makeup, superficial, stupid story...
Review: The makeup in this film is extraordinary, but the story is so transparent so as to make it not worth seeing. The hero, though not ignorant, does not prevail through tremendous wit or skill. He stumbles into resolving the issues through heavenly intervention. The tacky ending is clearly a primitive setup for a follow-on film.

Summary: Apples and Oranges
Review: All these guys saying that this movie is not as good as the first one or whatever are comparing apples to oranges. This movie is fine if you look at it on it's own merits. The special f/x are awesome. The apes really kiss some major A$$ in this movie. It's a good movie. The ending is as thought provoking if not more so than the "Statue Of Liberty" ending. I will be seeing this one again.

Summary: Even better than the Original...
Review: This movie is even better than the original Planet of the Apes! I downloaded it from a FTP server, and watched it on my computer. It totally rules the planet. When Captain Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) has to sent his monkey into space for a test, it gets lost and Leo follows to find him. On the way, there is a electrical storm that sents Leo to an Ape planet. He is surrounded with other humans who have been captured by the apes. The Senators' daughter Ari who is played by Helena Bonham Carter, helps the captured humans escape. This film would not be a regret to buy. It is definetely worth the money! If you're a Mark Wahlberg fan, I would recommend this movie...go to...for more information on Mark (if you're a Mark fan.) Review: Apes Rule The World...? Did they also write this script? I'm a huge fan of the original films, the t.v. series, and the book. THIS version truely SUCKED! PLEASE DON'T MAKE A SEQUEL!

Summary: No Monkey Business
Review: PLANET OF THE APES is a smart summer film. And, it is a 're-imagining' of a previous smart film. I find the word 're-imagining' works well. This new film starts off with an intiguing title sequence. This has become a fantastic trademark of Director Tim Burton, set up the film design right in the opening credits. Only the BOND films seem to do that as well. Film Composer Danny Elfman (of Oingo Boingo fame) once again proves to be to Tim Burton what John Williams is to Steven Spielberg, his musical voice. Here, Elfman uses a huge orchestra along with non-orchestral sounds, creating a greatly nuanced score. Mark Wahlberg is not one of my favorite actors and unfortunately, the first twenty minutes suggest he is going to carry the film. But, following a tremendous space-pod crash, apes fill the screen. And what apes they are. The make-up by Rick Baker surpasses anything seen to date. Each simian is able to express emotions better than Mark Wahlberg and Estella Warren. And Burton knows it, constantly bringing it to the forefront. Especially powerful is Helena Bonham Carter as the 'human activist' Ari and Tim Roth as the over-the-top (and up a tree, and over your heads) General Thade. He, complete with rolling shoulders and eyes of fire. The storyline does not move around as much as most summer popcorn flicks go, but I found the story strength in the performances and production values. After all, having humans caged by monkeys is a big irony. The final battle is less interesting than the simian approach to battle, they run on all fours, pounce through the air and beat their enemy like a kettle drum... But, the introduction of the human 'weapon' is worth the price of admission. Much has been said about the ending, both positive and negative. The ending is intellectually stimulating but, it does suffer from the "Can't Live Up to Liberty" disease. I had expected to dislike the film, since I am a fan of the original, but put me under the pleasantly surprised category.

Summary: All form, no substance!
Review: A beautifully produced movie. Far superior to the original production. But it lacked one simple ingredient that the original had. Great writing. Great plot! and a killer ending. While sitting in the theatre, I could hear quite a few oohs and ah! from the general audience to Tim Burtonâ''s production, but I could also hear quite a few people predict the sub-plots and well as the ending. Audience age range was pretty spread across the board. Am I to believe that thereâ''s not one talented Hollywood writer that could have blown us away with a shocker ending? No one to raise the excitement bar? I really donâ''t get it!

Summary: Don't watch these monkey's do it!
Review: I don't think I have ever walked out of film more confused than I did walking out of this one. I don't want to give away the ending so I want say why I was confused, but lets just say trying to figure out what actually happened will do nothing more than break your brain. The costumes and makeup for this film are probably the only reason to go see it. The acting is subpar, its Mark Walberg how good could it be. The story makes you want to just jump out of your seat and yell, "WHAT THE ... IS GOING ON!!!". So should you go see this film. Sure, just make sure you don't try and follow the story or figure out the plot. I suggest going very intoxicated to fully enjoy it. (Warning this is only a SUGGESTION, please do not actually follow through with this... unless you want to)
