Summary: One of the beat science fiction movies ever!!!!
Review: I've never been much on science fiction, but this Aliens movie is the exception. The extra 17 minutes of the director's cut just adds more to the original movie version.

Review: Hey, don't get me wrong--the film "Aliens" that I orginally saw on the big screen, and have rented numerous times on video, is a heart-pounding, pulse-raising 5 star sci-fi horror thriller. Unfortunately, this isn't that movie, quite. The additional 17 "bonus" minutes add only the most blatant of character motivations and substantially slow down the pace of a film that already started out slowly (I think all 17 minutes show up in the first half). Worse yet, this additional footage is unavoidable on DVD--it's blended right in: some whole scenes are new, some additonal footage has been "restored" to scenes that used to be shorter and previously packed more punch. You can't avoid the extra footage if you wanted to--and if you're like me, you'll want. I would have much preferred that it be tacked on at the end, or that this be a double-side disc that allowed for veiwing of the orginal theatrical release. The main realization this extra footed provided was what a wise editor this film had in its original incarnation. The other extras also didn't quite live up to expectations. So Cameron has his "director's cut" now, but I don't have a copy of a film I love and would like to be able to view for my $30 investment without fast-forwarding through scenes I didn't want and that this film doesn't need.

Summary: I admit it, it scared the crap out of me.
Review: If you saw Aliens in the theatre and were sitting next to some guy that kept cowering and covering his eyes, that was probably me. Put me down in the corner of those that feel the film is better with the added footage than without it.

Summary: The bes of the Alien Series
Review: Aliens is the masterful work of James Cameron and I believe that it actually surpasses the original Alien in action, suspense, sound, and special effects, but not in claustriphobia. This special edition version on DVD is superb, the extras are fantastic, with an interview of James Cameron, and cut out scenes. The extra footage that some of these reviewers are complaining about is great. They are saying that it is not essential, of course it is not essential or else it would have been in the original movie, the extra footage is more of a gift to fans of James Cameron and the Alien series who want to see James Cameron's original dream. I think the extra footage is great and completes James Cameron's masterpiece. I recommend all of the Alien movies but this one is the best.

I give it a High Five

Summary: Cameron shows how to do it...
Review: Before TITANIC, before TERMINATOR 2, and before THE ABYSS, James Cameron made what is the ne plus ultra of his action-film output, ALIENS. Many of us wondered what on earth could a sequel to ALIEN ever be like. Ridley Scott's mesmerizingly terrifying Gothic thriller in space seemed as if it couldn't be matched. And indeed, wisely, Cameron found the way to do it by avoiding the horror-movie aspect, and instead fashioning one of the finest pieces of filmmaking in the action genre. ALIENS is a war movie of almost unstoppable velocity. This new DVD version includes the 20 minutes or so of footage that 20th Century Fox demanded be removed to keep down the theatrical running time. The new footage (previously available only on the boxed-set laserdisc) forestalls the action elements, yet provides very clear motivation for the character of Ripley to embrace the discovery of the lone little girl on the "alien" planet. This footage stretches the introductory sequences to about 45 minutes, but once the story is set up, the action set pieces begin coming in gangbusters style for the remaining two-thirds of the picture.

Beautifully, intelligently designed, photographed and edited, ALIENS mixes suspense, terror, and full-throttle action in a supremely confident and entertaining manner. The DVD's picture is intensely sharp, and the 5.1 digital surround howls with power. The movie has never looked or sounded this good on home video. For thrills and chills, it's a one-of-kind experience.

Summary: Wow, what a movie!
Review: Most people know James Cameron from making TITANIC. I know him from making ALIENS.

Of all the movies I have ever seen no one movie sets a mood like Cameron does in this one. Every set conveys the image of being in a true foreign world. How this movie failed to win an Oscar for set design still escapes me. The sets are wonderful. The props (and there's a ton of them) are all great-looking and believable. James Hoerner won the Academy Award for best score in Titanic and could have also won that same award here. His eerie score is terrific and is instrumental to setting the mood. The music from this movie's climax has been used to promote at least 5 other movies.

The Special-Edition DVD version adds about 15 minutes to the film. Too bad it was removed from the theatrical release because it really explains why Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) risks her life to save that of a little girl. Also, this version has an interview with Cameron, shows pre-production test shots and has over 100 photos of story boards, set designs and actor biographies.

If you like action or science-fiction this is a must see. If you've already seen it watch it again and pay particular attention to the sets, props and score. They are all terrific.

Summary: Additional Footage Ties Everything Together
Review: This movie was already one of my favorite movies of all time. With the additional footage that showed Newt and her family being the ones finding the alien ship and bringing it back to the colony just ties everything together. In addition, if you listen closely, Newt and her brother are arguing. Her brother hates that she always wins a game they play because she is small enough to fit in the air ducts and no one was able to get up there to find her. It makes sense now why one little girl could survive something that an entire colony and group of bad marines could not. Excellent menu-screen feel with the video camera views from Appone and Hicks. A "Must Buy" DVD.
