Summary: A New Zealand Triumph
Review: Much of the credit for this great movie lies with its visionary director, Peter Jackson, and the awesomely rugged beauty of New Zealand. New Zealand's other-wordly quality steals every scene from an admirable line up of acting talent. If you want to see a true Middle Earth visit New Zealand.

For a small nation of just under four million people to produce not just one great film - but an epic trilogy - is staggering. That they did it so well is a testament to this intelligent, enterprising and surprisingly sophisticated little nation at the bottom of the world.

Summary: bored of epic things
Review: My biggest criticism of the movie is that it tries too hard to be an epic, and as a result has its moments of grandeur, and unfortunately, its moments of stultifying boredom. I'm sympathetic to the problem the director ran into: keeping true to Tolkien's vast vision while making a movie that didn't sprawl for six hours. As someone once remarked, "more about less" -- I'm sure Tolkien fans would've have complained, but I'd rather irritate a few people than make a bad movie. Don't get me wrong -- I've read the Hobbit countless times, the Lord of the Rings trilogy several times, and finally I've actually read Simarillion twice (for this I believe I deserve significant financial compensation) -- so I don't mean to disparage Tolkien's vision. But to think that one can reproduce the magic of the trilogy by being literally faithful to the text is simply naive. In short, this is probably a good movie if you are a Tolkien fan, but a disappointment if you are looking for combination of action, drama, and special effects (well, they did this pretty well, except for the obscene "eye of sauron" -- what the [heck] were they thinking?).

Summary: Movie is great. DVD is not.
Review: My copy of this DVD just arrived in the mail today. The feature film is terrific... I saw it 6 (or maybe more, lost count) times in theatres. But, I am going to review the DVD. The style of the dvd, the featurettes, etc etc.

The special features did not satisfy me much. The Two Towers preview was the only very interesting one on there, atleast for me, who has been keeping up with Lord of the Rings news for the past year. Many of the features tell about things most Lord of the Rings fans know, and things that many people (pardon me if I am wrong) who are not Lord of the Rings fans wouldn't be interested in.

As for the menus, they are interesting and elegant, with beautiful background music. And the scene-viewing selection is great (in terms of where you can select a certain scene in the movie to view), with very precise scenes, it's like, every 5 minutes they inserted a tab so you could flip there if you so desired. Getting exactly where you want.

This film also transferred well to a small screen (and I mean a small screen... our living room television is a foot by a foot, without surround sound or any of that ritz). Of course, it is slightly less easy to be [drawn]into the film to the same wonderful degree than it is on silver screen, especially on such a small tv as I have viewed it, but in some ways there are benefits. It's less... in your face, which has it's advantages and it's disadvantages. It is easier to keep up with battlescenes that would seem chaotic or confusing on silver screen, and (this can be good or bad, depending) it is not as overwhelming on dvd.

The movie itself deserves 5 stars, but the dvd doesn't in my opinion. I can hardly find it in my heart to give a disc set containing The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring anything less than a 5, but, in my humble opinion, the DVD could have been much better. I personally plan on *renting* the extended DVD when it comes out, if I can get a hold of it.

As Director Peter Jackson puts it in The Two Towers preview (not word for word, but something along these lines), 'Everyone hails "The Fellowship of the Ring" as a great, ground-breaking epic fantasy film, but, they haven't seen nothing yet' (concerning the next two films in the trilogy)

Summary: Great Movie.
Review: My favorite one of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. I don't know why because there are some scenes in the movie that scare the heck outta me! The 1st part of LOTR describes a fellowhip of 9 going out to Mordor to destroy the One Ring created by the dark lord, Sauron. If Sauron regains the ring, Middle Earth is doomed, if he doesn't, then Sauron will fall.

Rated: PG-13 For Epic Battle Sequences and Scary Images.

Rinning Time: 178 minutes.

Review: my fellow tolkin believers!
at last we have seized the weapon to silence all them potter fans. their pathetic little wizard may very well beat us at the boxoffice race, but he has lost the war. he was crushed and vaporised. the lord of the rings is by far the best adventure movie ever, and that includes the never ending story and willow.

Summary: Worth every penny.
Review: My first impression of this set: Why? I mean, please, just add the deleted scenes to the regular disk like everyone else. And why should we buy into their clever little money making scheme with the two releases?

And the answer is: They did EVERY LAST THING right! The extended version is even more epic and incredible than the theatrical release, with some of those little scenes you missed thrown back in. Adding them back into the movie is so superior to seeing some partially produced deleted scenes at the end. The re-mastered sound is awesome, and using 16x9 format is the best possible way to approach that theater feeling at home. The extras are interesting, well produced, and exhaustive. I have never seen so much information on how a movie was made, from any source, ever. I plopped down the extra for the "collector's gift set", and the Argonauth bookends are cool. Buy it now, or you will feel inadequate.

Summary: Such a PHENOMENAL movie, I'm dedicating my life to it!
Review: My girlfriend and I saw it on our first date and again on our second date, as well as several times on DVD. Well, we loved it almost as much as we love each other so we are getting married in New Zealand on December 18, 2002. After the ceremony, my wife and I are taking our family and friends to the theater to see The Two Towers!

Summary: *£%$£^"£ Fantastic!
Review: My god...I've never read the books, but after seeing this im going to.

This is without doubt the best film i have ever seen. Everything else pales in comparison with it.

Seen Harry Potter? If so, forget it. That film is just plain bad when compared to this piece of cinematic mastery.

A party of 50 students from our school were able to see the film today as a Christmas "treat". I had gone with trepidation, thinking it might be boring, fantasy not being my thing. but my my my, i was wrong. This film is ANYTHING but boring.

it was fantastic! You all have to go and see it. It's highly, highly reccomend. I can't actually think of a bad thing to say about it. It outshines almost every single film I've ever seen.

The film is almost indescribable. The acting is superb, no one character is any better than the next. it is a brilliant film which is the gigantic sum of all it's wonderful parts. Everything about it is stunning. A nice thing about it is that it doesn't feature too many well-known stars, (save from the sublime Christopher Lee) so we dont have anything to compare their acting to.

The wonderful scenery and breathtaking special-effects are just that, breathtaking. the film has left images with me which i wont forget in a hurry. In fact, the scenery and special effects are so brilliant and such a part of the film as to almost become a living breathing seperate character. It is nothing short of stunning.

You have to see it.

If you only see one film this year, make it The Lord of The Rings part 1.

If you only see two films this year, watch it again.

Summary: intense...almost psychedelic
Review: My husband is a big fan of Lord of the Rings since he grew up in the 70's. I on the other hand, as a girl, was more concerned with Barbies than with Hobbits. It looks like I missed out.

We went and saw TLOTR today and it was intense, to say the least. The effects were amazing...it all looked so real.
But I think for me, who never read the book or watched the earlier animated versions, it made it hard to sit through the three hours. Two hours, no problem, maybe even 2 and 1/2. But, man, that last half hour seemed like an eternity! For me, that was kind of disappointing since I thought the effects/ acting/ costumes/scenery was so amazing...it was dissapointing to feel restless. I felt almost guilty.

Weirdest thing too is that I feel like I stared at the screen so long, with the intense footage, I swear I walked out of there in like a dream state. Almost "high". Seriously, it took me a few minutes to ground myself back into the reality of the non-middle earth! Three hours of staring at a huge screen of anything is a long time....let along graphic action scenes.

My advice is go see the movie! BUT, eat first so you don't starve during the 30 minutes of previews or the 3 hours of footage. And allow yourself, force yourself, to stare away from the screen every so often. It'll do your eyes and your brain a favor LOL!
