Summary: This movie deserves more than 5 stars
Review: THERE'S A SPOILER IN THIS REVIEW SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW HOW THE MOVIE ENDS DO NOT READ ON.

Highlander has the most beautiful, moving, and emotional story that has ever been conceived. Connor MacLeod risks his life and fights evil immortals so that mortal man will not have to suffer an eternity of darkness. And in the end, with all the power he has from winning the prize, he uses it to benefit others instead of himself. That is absolutely the most beautiful and most altruistic thing I've have ever heard of. One of the world's greatest tragedies is that those who took Highlander away from Gregory Widen have no concept of what makes it so special. How they actually managed to capture this spirit in the tv series with the noble and heroic Duncan MacLeod is beyond me. Because it was mutilated by Highlander 2: The Quickening and butchered yet again by Highlander: The Raven.

Summary: Worst DVD I have seen
Review: The rumors are true - the quality of the DVD transfer is simply appalling, both in terms of the sound and visuals. Visually it looks as though the master was a VHS tape and the sound is just as irritating.

The movie itself combines poor acting with a script that can compete with any respectable porn movie. But it is strangely entertaining for anyone who enjoys fantasy/sci-fi/action movies, although it looks dated now.

Summary: Added the scenes that were cut in the US
Review: This is a classic! Loved the widescreen format and the restored scenes added depth to the story. I have loved this film since I first saw it and have to say that it just gets better. The cinematography is superb (especially the fades and the flashbacks). There is nothing like this and it has to be Christopher Lambert's best work.

Summary: Comment on DVD quality
Review: This is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I guess most of us like it so I won't write a "real" review. I did want to comment on the sound and picture quality. Maybe it's because I have a TV that's not that great in the first place, but I don't really see any major video or audio problems with this DVD. I guess if you have a home theater system the low quality is obvious, but if you just have a "regular" TV with the DVD player plugged right into it, I doubt you will notice any problems. This one plays better than some other DVDs I have, like THEY LIVE, and the director's commentary is fun to listen to and informative. Hopefully they'll release an improved version in the future for the true videophiles.

Summary: Great Entertainment with Good Performances.
Review: The first time, i`ve seen it. I hated it, i find the film was bad on the lighting was almost unwatchable. Then a couple of years, i`ve seen it again with the digitally remastered director`s cut on video, three years back. Which was improvement with the lighting, is more bright than the old vhs. For some reason, i was into the movie than the first time, i seen it. The film has great performances by Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown(Who`s stoled every scene with a dark sense of humour, almost the same, as he did with Pet Semetary 2) and Sean Connery gives some of the best moments in the film as Lambert mentor. Director`s Cut adds about six minutes, which makes more sense than theatrical relase, still it some scene in the movie, has some holes in the story. DVD version is not bad, the picture quatily is good, at times, is grainy and murky but is acceptable quatily 3.5/5. Sound quality is great, remastered soundtrack is better than you expect, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sourround is excellent, 5/5. Audio Commentary from the director and the producers is good, talking about added scene wasn`t in theatrical relase and another scenes, he talks about scene were not longer cut, were to him, no good at all.Like-Kurgar(Brown)Character in the film, he goes to fight with an immortal security guard or Lambert(MacLeod), Another Immortal, who`s is a good guy goes at a bar, along with a cop, following them around and they get the cop drunk and that explain why Krugar fight immortal outside the bar, after Macleod left the bar scene. DVD has a good extra:a behind the scene photos, but it also include interviews with the filmmakers and the cast, never seen before pictures in the film, films reviews and more.It hard to control the extras(It goes so fast, you see hardly, what is about), just it on pause on your DVD controler to seen it, is a fascinating look. I think the reason, why they sell this DVD cheaply, They planning a better relase picture quality with a little more extras like Deleted Scenes, could be added and Behind The Scenes Featurette in the near future. Who`s known?, it could be a 20th anniversary edition in six years or maybe it could be next year for 15th year, since it relase. Grade:A-.

Summary: Disappointment
Review: I saw the film in the cinema a long time ago and it impressed me much. I was 23 at the time. The good memories blossomed in my mind so I decided to buy the DVD because I thought it was such a classic. Actually, with the eyes of the 32-old that I am now, it's really bad. Except for Sean Connery the acting is bad, for starters. The fighting scene music is atonal mayhem (considering I appreciate heavy metal, that is saying something). Specific to this DVD: The Director's Cut thing adds little, if anything. The sound and music is very loud in comparison to the dialogues. Sometimes there is subtitling when they're actually not saying anything audible.

Summary: It really is as bad as they say!
Review: I picked this up at a local store for ... after hemming and hawing. After all, how could a DVD with extra content be so cheap. And it's Highlander, a movie I like and which many others have been drooling over for a decade-and-a-half. There must be something...why are there so many on the rack at this price...why haven't the droolers all snapped them up..?

But... is pocket change so I finally just checked out. Argggh.

This is only my eighth DVD, but this transfer falls so far below the standard set by these that that's enough of a sample to know how bad this is. I paused it several times and showed friends the compression artifacts/swirlies visible everywhere. It is very much like a horribly compressed batch of JPG photos strung together.

How long did it take to notice? Two disappointed minutes.

The rest of the package seems produced by the studio's lesser intern--at best. The menu isn't themed for Highlander, just with a Republic Pictures logo. The buttons are $20 home photo program "button" derivatives. The slide show is full of pics but just a fast-moving, unprofessional array that must be paused to view.

I still have many wide-screen version VHS movies to compare this to, and yes it suffers in comparison. I can't say it's entirely worse than those, as no matter how badly compressed, most lettering/titles show up better in the DVD due to the resolution. Whoop-de-do.

In the end, this ... buys you a good slap-in-the-face, a blow softened to the effect of 2 stars only if you're a serious fan--simply because the commentary track can be informative.

Summary: what a bargain.
Review: A great classic tale. For the price you can't pass it up. I am surprised at the lack of quality in this DVD. I found the audio problem immediatly and I am far from a critic. It suffered from the classic too quiet too loud. I also felt the audio didn't quite sync well enough. I can only assume that they had poor materials to work with. In any case if it was value over perfection I would still by the value. As always it's good to have a choice. Do you here that studios?

Summary: The extra commentary / director's cut content is great
Review: I really thought (as is so often the case) that the content added by the director's cut really makes this a much better movie. Ideas which one had to guess at are explained or can be inferred from the extra footage. Too bad the idiot American editors out there can't figure out that much of the audiences they are trying to "protect" are probably far more discerning then they are. (i.e. stop trying to help us!) The audio track commentary from the producer/director cast was great too. It provided interesting insights and thoughts behind things. They also discuss many of the differences between the American and the Eurpoean(=Director's) cut. One example I got a kick out of: originally they wanted the pro wrestling scene to be Ice Hockey -- they were trying to portray that modern society is still violent. Get this - the hockey association (no, I don't remember the name, I'm not a fan) wouldn't allow it. They didn't want to be portrayed as a VIOLENT SPORT! Gee, I guess all those fights are really hugs where someone slipped... Anyway, to me, often the behind the scenes commentary and extra features like this are really BIG bonuses one gets with the DVD versions, which can enrich the thoughtful viewer's expeience of the film -- and these seem to be often overlooked. So all things considered, a very nice value for under ten bucks, and a great story for certain.

A thought on the commonly cited audio/video "quality" problems: I just have a "normal" TV with coaxial input. On this 19" TV (fed from the standard audio/video out through an RF modulator), the video and audio seems as good or better than a VHS videotape. I wonder if this is a big part of the problem with the wide discrepency reported in the quality in the reviews - the final viewing "hardware setup". So, just a thought, maybe a direct TV hookup will make this DVD more enjoyable, masking some of the "blemishes"? Might be worth trying for the disappointed fans. All fancy new technology (not just computers) requires "fiddling with" at times to get optimum results.
