Summary: Muscular filmmaking, but lacking charm.
Review: June 25, 2002

I knew going into this movie that Peter Jackson's
sensibilities were far from my own. I expected the action
scenes to be disorienting and over-edited, and they were.
Extreme close-ups, slow motion, swooping cameras, utter
disdain for master shots--audiences today don't seem to
mind this sort of thing (even though they usually rip me
right out of a film), so I was prepared to overlook
the issue. I'd heard good things about how determined
Jackson was to make an earnest adaptation of J.R.R.
Tolkein's books, how well written the movie was. That's
where I felt a bit let down.

For starter's, the film's pacing is off. Narrative time
escapes 'FOTR' like water running out of a cracked jug. The
meeting of Strider and subsequent flight to Rivendell are
downright vertiginous after all that time (some of it wasted)
spent in the Shire. At the other end of the film, the last
fifteen minutes feel like a clock running down. Also, great
visuals aside, the film's prologue is inferior to its
counterpart in the Bakshi animated film, which at least
supplied the relevant information about who Gollum was.

With a wonderful cast at his command, Jackson's most
serious misstep was to trim dialogue scenes and then bury
them in special effects. Cate Blanchett, for one, should
sue. The scene at Galadriel's mirror is embarrassingly
off-tone. The quaint humor of the book is largely abandoned,
a result I never dreamed might come from a New Zealand director
and his UK cast. It's one thing for a foreign production to
adopt the modern American hyperbolic film-style, it's quite
another to adopt the modern American leaden script-style.
This time it's Sean Austin who should sue. He gives his all,
but the part of Sam is chop-suey.

Although I cannot agree that all of the special effects
come off perfectly, they are often stupendous. The cast
is mostly excellent. I can see a lot of hard work in
Fellowship. Unfortunately, I don't see much subtlety or charm.

For that rare blockbuster not made in Hollywood,
those should be its trump cards.

Summary: fantasy done right
Review: There really isn't much I can say here that hasn't been said before, but I thought I'd add my two cents anyway, and here goes. LOTR is, I think, the first time Hollywood has done justice to the fantasy genre. The filmmakers were really taking a roll of the dice with this material, and they pulled it off amazingly. Peter jackson focused on what made Middle-Earth such an intriguing place to visit in the first place: the characters! Sure, the settings and creatures were always part of the fun, as well, but its the human side of every story that matters. With things like the Star Wars films, you get the feeling that those movies are just exercises in technology. Take the Phantom Menace DVD and its audio commentary--Lucas and the tech team did nothing but comment on the special effects and how they were created. Not one word was spoken with regards to the characters and story. And why? Because there really wasn't much of a story and the characters were so thin you wouldn't have noticed them if they stood sideways. Peter Jackson has proven himself a storyteller's storyteller; he understands how to make his characters sympathetic and believable. George Lucas, however--much as I've admired him in the past--has admitted to not being much of a writer, and it shows. He hides his lack of talent in that department with special effects, the reason his new movies seem very cardboardish at the same time they're beautiful to look at. LOTR dared to be beautiful while still giving us a story driven by great characters. Of course, Jackson had them already mapped out for him, but he still had to adapt them to the screen within a limited timeframe. That meant he was skating a fine line between true development and the usual abyss of action-movie heros and villians. Luckily for us, he managed to skirt that abyss and give audiences something more enduring. Now, at the risk of sounding two-faced, my all-around favorite scene in this flick was a big action piece--the battle and chase through Moria. Still, without the concern for the charcters, we would not have cared who made it out of there and who didn't. Gandalf's plunge into the pit gave our guts a wrench, and was incredibly presented. I was not originally planning on buying this DVD because I've seen the movie three times, but having thought about it, I'd say it'd be worth the money. LOTR is a milestone--fantasy done right! Somewhere, I'm sure, Tolkien is lighting up his pipe, kicking back with his buddy C.S. Lewis, and smiling with approval. "Well done, I thought," he's saying. "Be interesting to see what they've done with the next two..." Great movie!

Summary: The Best Movie Ever
Review: I love The Lord of th Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring! I saw it at the theaters twice and I plan on buying it when it comes to video. It is my favorite movie ever and it inspired me to read the books. I love the books, also. You should see it. The Lord of the Rings Rocks! The actors all did a great job and Peter Jackson directed it very well. Other movies I recomend are: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Scorpian King.

Summary: Joyously, Not What I Expected!
Review: I waited to see this movie until it came out in the (price) theater because it just didn't appear that great from all the previews that I saw. It wasn't my type of movie. Violent, fantasy, etc. However, when I did see it, I was in shock!
Yes, it was a little bit violent, but not in a hideous way. There was no blood shed. There was none of the "drawing the movie out", it was exciting and adventurous to the last second.
Elijah Wood was excellent as Frodo. Everyone did a good job, especially the newcomers. There wasn't too much romance in it, but enough to spark the interest of those who like romantic movies.
It's a very mature movie, but the special effects are incredible, the plot was brillant, and the movie was just fabulous! I can't wait for the sequel!

Summary: THIS THING ROCKS AS DO ALL RING-NERDS!!!
Review: If you are interested in buying a movie (specifically a DVD) this summer this should be your #1 consideration! Chock full with new features this DVD combines a great movie with great extras. There is nothing wrong with this, as most movies seem to be, and if you don't like it is because you haven't read the book. If you are intersted in purchasing the DVD, and are worried about the price, Amazon just lowered it like 8 bucks so don't sweat about it. JUST BUY IT!!!

Summary: DUDE!!! this movie ROCKED!!!!
Review: WAAAAAY better than Harry Potter, even though I loved that too. The ACTION, the STORY, and Elijah Wood was SSSOOOO good in this.

Summary: I have not seen a better movie!!!
Review: I loved this movie because of the way it was almost exactly like the book.
I wish they had left the songs in but that would have made it too long. Some of the parts in the book by Tolkin were a bit boring (but i suppose my opinion is biased since i was only 6 when i read it) The movie left those bits out and produced a fantastic movie to watch.
My parents had to ban me from seeing it because i was using all my pocket money at the movies to see it.
I am saving to buy LOTR the instant it comes out and i can't wait until the Two Towers is released.
My favorite charecter is legolas. Partly because of the way he moves so lightly and so fast and the way he fights but mostly because i think he is SO hot.
Watch and buy this movie

Review: OMIGOD!!!! This is the greatest movie of ALL TIME seriously, I absolutely adored it, and wowsa Elijah and Orlando are soooooooo gorgeous!!!! Oh baby the part where Frodo gets stabbed by a ringwraith had me sniffling to say the least! The orcs were really gross and Sauron really gave me the heebies! I thought Liv Tyler was great in her role, she really made the charactor 3 dimensional. Just please take my advice... Buy-the-movie.

Summary: The Best in Middle Earth
Review: Oh my god!
Fans such as myself could not want more. Not only is there a 2-disc set but to wet our appetites more there's a 4-disc directors cut. Even more is a special extended 5-disc with a National Geographic Special on New Zealand (Yey!!). People call us nerds but i say GO PETER JACKSON!!. The movie could not have been better if Spielberg himself directed this. I, personally have seen the movie...6 TIMES! But that's half of what some people have done. This DVD, in my opinion, is the best DVD ever made.
Prrecioussssss!
