Review: this is a great movie, part of one of the best movie trilogies in recent memory. the movie starts out cool and is filled with excellent special effects, good acting, and well done dialog. coming of of one of the most skepticized movie release, in regard to the fact that others that have tried to create the story as a movie have failed, the movie was a hit. winning 11 academy awards and filled with a spectacular soundtrack with music from the Chicago Symphanic Orchastra and other numerous awards for other elements, this is a must see DVD.

Summary: Rousing, Satisfying & Long Conclusion to the Epic Tale.
Review: Having successfully resisted an attack of Sauron's forces on the kingdom of Rohan, Gandalf (Ian McKellan) discovers that Sauron is preparing his next and greatest attack on Minas Tirith, capitol of Gondor, the kingdom to whose throne Aragorn is heir. Gandalf and Pippen (Billy Boyd) travel to Minas Tirith to try to convince the city's self-absorbed Steward of the impending peril. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), and Rohan's King Theoden (Bernard Hill) lead Rohan's armies toward Minas Tirith, where they will make their stand against the advancing Armies of Mordor. Meanwhile, Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) have penetrated the borders of Mordor and continue to make their way toward Mount Doom, guided by the treacherous Gollum, as Frodo struggles under the weight of the Ring's burden.

With this final chapter in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, director Peter Jackson brings the story to its conclusion in spectacular fashion worthy of the first two installments. The ability to maintain quality across three movies may largely be due to their being filmed continuously with no breaks or regrouping between the three films. "The Return of the King" is the longest of the three films at 3 hours 15 minutes. And that is where I find fault with it. The opening sequence serves no purpose, and the final act, which is a sort of epilogue, seems to go on endlessly and say very little. The camera work is conspicuously languorous as well. In dramatic scenes the camera often lingers in one place so long that the audience may grow impatient and wonder offhandedly if it is stuck. A half hour could have easily been trimmed from this film without any detrimental effect, and it should have been. There will be plenty of room for extraneous material on the "Extended Edition" DVD. Apart from that, "The Return of the King" is a satisfying and rousing conclusion to "The Lord of the Rings" epic. The battle sequences are spectacular. The visual effects are impressive. And the cast is wonderful. Ian McKellan's and Viggo Mortensen's commanding onscreen presence befits their mythical characters. And I have to admire Sean Astin's portrayal of Samwise Gamgee more than any other performance in the trilogy. "The Return of the King" is cornier than either of its predecessors, and it is extremely sentimental. Sometimes that's laid on a bit thick, but it's to be expected in a concluding chapter, and it isn't unlike the book on which it is based. The pace of "The Return of the King" more closely resembles "The Fellowship of the Ring" than "The Two Towers", and its attention to the Hobbits does as well. "The Two Towers" remains my favorite film of the trilogy because I prefer its swift pace, and, even though I was obsessed with Tolkien's books as a child, I was never fond of Hobbits. If you like Hobbits, they are back in the center of the action in "The Return of the King". Screenwriter Frances Walsh has admirably accomplished the superhuman task of condensing JRR Tolkien's books into workable screenplays. I always felt that the book "The Fellowship of the Ring" was superior to "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King". And I don't think that the film "The Fellowship of the Ring" captured that book's themes. On the other hand, I believe the films of "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" have, if anything, improved on the books, and Frances Walsh is due the credit. Peter Jackson, Frances Walsh, and thousands of cast and crew have created a cinematic event in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which people of all ages and cultures will be watching for centuries to come. Congratulations to all who contributed.

Summary: Don't jump the gun before the extended edition.
Review: I think the distributors deliberately release this shorter, inferior 2-dvd set long before the 4-dvd extended set is released like they did with the last two in the series. I was tricked into buying the 2-dvd first release of "Fellowship" and then only regretted it when the 4-dvd release came out a few weeks later - i sold it on ebay and coughed up the extra dough for the 4-dvd set. if you're a real fan, you'll want to wait for the 4-dvd set to come out, which will likely include extra footage and other special features.

BUT... this movie series rocks, and this version will cost less than the extended set will, so i have to give it a neutral rating based on that.

Summary: 5 stars times 5!!!!!
Review: the Return of the King is amazing. It has locations and scenery that blow away any other movie. It's battle scenes are amazing. I must say, the Siege of Gondor and Battle of Pelennor Fields are the most spectacular battles ever filmed in history. I loved it.
A lot of people at school think I'm crazy cuz I saw it (excuse the 'cuz') five times in theaters, but hey, I couldn't just see it once and then wait 5 1/2 months. I first saw it at the LOTR Marathon, at about 10:30 at night. I had no idea what to expect--would it be closer to the book than TTT had been? How would they make the end? How would--I stopped thinking as scene after amazing scene just kept coming. I knew Minas Tirith, from the book, was an amazing place, but didn't know just HOW amazing. Then Gandalf rode up the grassy slope, and....there it was. I just gaped at the huge screen in front of me and at the awesome White City. This was amazing. Then the scene at Minas Morgul, and Shelob. It was really different from the other two....Frodo was turning completely evil and crazy, and everything was just overall....grim, and dark. I really love Smeagol in Two Towers, but I hate him in the third one. Not the character, but just what he does! He's.....TRICKSY! He hates Sam! I just was so angry as he said, "Crumbs on his jacketses! HE took it!" I was so glad when Sam sliced him across the stomach! But you know...it was very moving, the scene in Mount Doom, when he gets the Ring. I mean, for sixty-something years he's been without it, and now he finally has his Precious. Just the look of wonder in his big eyes.......and then he jumps around, and falls....and......I'll stop there about Gollum. Sorry.
Anyway. The battles. When the Rohirrim mounted and rode away from Dunharrow, I was like, "Woah, six thousand cavalry. Wow!" I was like, "that is the biggest army the Rohirrim have ever--" then the scene switched to Pelennor Fields. I knew it was coming, I knew it was 200,000 Orcs and more, but when I actually saw it, I was blown away. They just stretched for miles in every direction! And when they had the shots of the Witch King flying over, and the catapults firing, and the Haradrim....man. I love that battle. And Theoden's death was very touching. But everyone, Aragorn is the best!!!! Send Sauron, any Mordor creature against him, he'll slice it to oblivion. The sword, man, best weapon. Bows are blaaaghhh.
The end was a bit long, but I liked it. And then the credits rolled, and it finally said, "The End." After three movies, it was "The End". And so Into the West came on.....yeah. So as we walked out to the sound of "what can you see...." and said "Merry Christmas" to each other (the Marathon was on the 23rd in the country where I live.), I thought, man, I've got to see that again. So I did.......haha.
how I do carry on. all right, I'll stop, lest I go over the word limit. well, I will not say buy it--I'll say, rent it at Blockbuster, see if you like it, (98% chance you will) then buy it.
this, and the Passion of the Christ, is one of the best movies ever made.
okay. bye

Summary: Excellent ending to a great trilogy
Review: Obviously the LOTR trilogy is one of the most highly revered triplets in the history of movies. Now, normally people expect the last part of a trilogy to fall short and, generally, it does. But The Return of the King continues, explains, and wraps up the story started by the previous two better than i could have hoped for. Having read the books, i was a bit dissapointed that the scouring of the shire was not in this (however it will be in the extended version). Definitely a 5\5 star movie worthy of 10 stars in my opinion. This could possible be called the greatest movie of all time. The battles are intense and in your face. The characters continue to hold and develop their personalities, and the plot is deepened and take turns in ways that you couldnt imagine (unless of course you have read the books). Now, the part of this masterpiece that most people are complaing about: The long, drawn out ending. This was the most appropriate way to end a trilogy of this magnitude. Tolkie's world and story are so deep, that a long ending was needed to tie up all the loose ends, but also... you can't look at it as the ending to one 3 1/2 hour movie. Its the ending to a 9 1/2 hour set of movies, so you cant compare it to the length of this one movie. However, when you look at it as the end of such a long, beautiful story, whats another half hour? You've already sat through 9 hours. This movie is so awesome i cannot explain it. But i wont ruin it for you. Buy it and watch it!

Summary: A True Masterpiece!
Review: Incredible acting, adaptation, sound, directing, and beautiful New Zealand locations give us a three hour movie that seems like only two. Too many endings? Not so--just closing a classic just like the books. Deserves every Oscar it received, but one that should have been bestowed was for Sean Astin as Supporting Actor; he did an incredible job.

Review: This movie is clearly the best ever, due to plot, characterization, etc. Anyway, its just a kick-ass movie overall, very moving, incredible visuals and anyone who gives it less than 5 is a freakin moron and i bet they know it as well you don't have to be a LOTR geek to appreciate this great movie.
