Rating: Summary: I love it. Review: I grew up on MST3K in the Sci-Fi era, so this to me is going back to the episodes I saw first. Time Chasers is my all time favorite Mike episode. I've seen it about five times and it cracks me up every time I see it.Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonder is another great episode. Very funny episode. Boggy Creek II and Touch of Satan are good, but not on the same level as the other two. Thankfully, though, there are none on the low level of Hamlet that was in the previous set. I highly suggest this set, especially if you're new to MST3K because all the episodes are fun and watchable. But for me the best part of this set is the 1/2 hour interview. Not only is it funny, but it's informative. I mean, there's stuff in the interview that I haven't read on the internet anywhere. It gives ya a lot of insider stuff that you probably wouldn't know if you didn't work at Best Brains. Plus, like the last set, Mike has a short intro to each episode that are equally entertaining. Also, if you want more Joel/Comedy Central episodes, you should support the show by buying this set. If it sells well, perhaps in the future the show will get more episodes and not just Sci-Fi episodes. But I'm glad to see Sci-Fi episodes available for purchase from Rhino.
Rating: Summary: Thanks Rhino, but please release Comedy Central episodes!!! Review: Excellent selection of Sci Fi era MST3K, but please, please, please, please, please RELEASE MORE COMEDY CENTRAL EPISODES!!! We want Joel! We want Frank! We want Dr. Forrester!!! Please!!! OK, now onto this set: Merlin's Mystical Shop of Wonders: An absolutely hilarious episodes. My personal favorite of the Sci Fi era. Two miserably bad movies, pathetically strewn together. "Rock and roll martian...." Time Chasers: Another terrific episode, feauturing one of the most unappealing male leads in cinematic history. Great host segments featuring Crow time traveling. The Touch of Satan: Very funny episode. Typical 70's schlock and the guys are in top form. Boggy Creek II: The weakest of the set...the movie is so bad that's it difficult to endure. Even Mike and the bots have trouble salvaging this one. Rhino, if you're listening: please release Comedy Central episodes again...it's the most popular and best era of the show. Seasons 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are MST3K's "prime years." Here are some suggestions: Master Ninja I, Master Ninja II, The Magic Sword, Santa Claus, Santa Claus Conqueres the Martians, The Lost Continent, Warrior of the Lost World, High School Bigshot, San Francisco International, Village of the Giants, Outlaw, King Dinosaur.
Rating: Summary: A good representation of MST3K Review: This volume has some solid works on it, and overall is a worthy edition to the MST3K collection. Each of the four movies featured have their strong and weak points, and everybody will have their favorites, but this is how I ultimately rated each one in terms of performances by the stars of the show: Boggy Creek II: 8/10 Merlin: 7/10 Time Chasers: 8/10 The Touch of Satan: 9/10 Each episode made me laugh out loud, which says a lot in itself since few shows do. Pick this up if you're looking for a new type of comedy or are a fan of MST3K.
Rating: Summary: Volume 5 Rocks!! Review: Listen, MST3K Volume 5 is the best of all the box sets of Mystery Science theater out there. Sets like Volume 4 which should not have included Hamlet an unfunny episode. This set includes: Boggy Creek 2 one of the worst movies ever to be made but one of the funniest MST3K episodes to be made, and then there is Time Chasers an excellent episode. But another peice of cinema garbage which was trashed by Mike and the Bots. Then there is the Touch of Satan another hilarious episode riffed by the gang up in the satellite. And last and certainly the least Merlins Shop of Mystical Wonders a very disturbing/funny episode. So if you are undecided about whether you want to buy this box set or not take it from me, you will not find any other side spliting comedy set out there.
Rating: Summary: The bonus features alone make it worth it.... Review: The Interview with Mike and Kevin (located on the disc with Merlin's Shop Of Mystical Wonders) is, in a word, Hilarious. Wonderfully insightful about the show's history, cast interactions, and writing process, it's simply essential viewing for any MST3K fan. Add to that Mike's intros for each episode and you've got a really excellent set of features.. The episodes are very good as well. Time Chaser's has a excellent intro from Mike discussing how the filmmakers were initially excited to have their film on MST... until they saw how it was lambasted. Merlin's Shop Of Mystical Wonders is a favorite of my Sister's-In-Law, and has some real fun host segements to go with it. Boggy Creek is a episode I have a hard time remembering... probably just from the pain of watching this piece of Arkansan cinematic drek. The Touch Of Satan is another great MST episode... The movie is just perfect for roasting, and M&TB don't disappoint. A excellent episode of MST3K. All in all, this is a great boxset, and well worth the purchase.
Rating: Summary: The Best Collection Yet Review: I just received my copy of MST3K volume 5, and I have to say this is the best boxed set yet. "Boggy Creek 2" is worth the price of the box set alone! "Time Chasers" "Merlin's Shop" and "Touch of Satan" round out the box set. If you are a fan of the show, no matter who the star is, or no matter what network the shows are from, you have to be happy Rhino is still putting these sets out. These 4 episodes feature the some of the funniest moments from the Sci-Fi era. The writing is great and the movies are wonderfully bad. On "Merlin's Shop" they have included a 1/2 hour interview with Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy where they talk about the shows inception and evolution. "Touch of Satan" has the movie's original theatrical trailer and Mike offers a 1-2 minute commentary at the beginning of each film. But overall the extras are pretty thin. I would love to see them once again include Un-Mstied versions of the films on each DVD. But this is the perfect set to introduce someone to MST3K, and it is a must have for all true fans of the show.
Rating: Summary: Actually 4.5.... But it IS MST3K so It's VERY funny.. Review: An OK set from the Sci-Fi years. Here are the episodes: Time Chasers - A man (who the bots refuse to accept as the hero) invents a time machine and goes into partnership with a corporation. But to his horror it's used to destroy the future so now he has to set things right. Great episode. 9/10 Boggy Creek 2 - A professor and his 3 students go to the woods to hunt for the Boggy Creek monster (Bigfoot in the bayou) and are force to endure endless flashbacks of previous sightings. It's funny cause it's MST3k, but not the best episode. 8/10 A Touch of Satan - A young drifter falls in love with a farmer's daughter which upsets her murdering grandma! Also not the funnniest episode, but the voice they give the grandma makes me laugh everytime. 7/10 Merlins Mystical Shop of Wonders - Merlin the magician (in modern times) helps an infertile couple have a baby and then goes out on the town to find a evil doll that was stolen from him. Best episode of the set by far, laughs are a mile a minute! 10/10 - To be honest I don't own the set so I can't tell you about any extras, but I've seen all 4 episodes at least 3 times each so I'd figure I'd review them Not the best set, I'd recommend Vol 1 or Vol. 4 over this. Or even better, the "Mitchell" and "Manos" DVD's are a great introduction to MST3K.
Rating: Summary: another great collection of hilarious movie spoofs Review: All of us who love this program can't wait to get as many of the episodes on DVD as possible. The four "movies" in this collection are as funny as any I've seen from the sci-fi station days of this series. "Time Chasers" is probably the best in this group but the others are well worth watching for a lot of good laughs. "Boggy Creek" is hilarious. After watching Mike and bots skewer it, you can see what a ridiculous movie it was. Both "A Touch of Satan" and "Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders" provide many funny moments. If you are new to MST3K, this is a good volume to start out watching. The quality of the DVDs is great. I had no problems at all. I had seen earlier reviews where some viewers reported a problem with the episodes as being too dark, but mine were fine. To me, some of the greatest episodes were the early ones. Many of these are available on VHS or DVD. I like "The Leech Woman", "Radar Secret Service", and "Night of the Blood Beast", to name a few. The worse the movie, the better the zingers Mike, Crow and Servo deliver. One thing I have found about this program is that it will lift you out of a blue mood as quickly as anything. If you like funny, off beat comedy, give any of the MST3K episodes a look. I think you will be highly entertained.
Rating: Summary: All very funny episodes Review: All of these are good choices from the SCIFI years, but the absolute best of all of these is with out a doubt, Boggy Creek II. I never get tired of watching that one and often times show it to friends. Even people from Arkansas laugh at it. What gets me the most about this film is that the director, who also wrote and stars in it along with half his family, really truly believes he is cool, but comes off as such an ass. It's also funny that the state of Arkansas helped fund this film, because it makes never ever want to visit there.
Rating: Summary: Merlin Chases Satan Thru Time; Sets Up Shop In Boggy Creek Review: Rhino has seen fit to release more MST3K movies from the Sci-Fi era which, considering that the Sci-Fi Channel has stopped broadcasting reruns, couldn't have come at a better time. "BOGGY CREEK II: AND THE LEGEND CONTINUES" turns Bigfoot into a good old boy from the Arkansas swamps. My favorite character is played by Jimmy Clem, a 400 plus pound hillbilly who wears bib overalls but doesn't wear a shirt. "I'm immodest, tee-hee," Crow intones in a Southern accent. He contrasts nicely with the main character's son Chuck Pierce, a scrawny kid who goes shirtless for most of the movie. When Chuck knocks on the door of a house, Crow asks, "Can I borrow a cup of shirt?" The best actor in the movie is the Boggy Creek creature. "MERLIN'S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS" is a horror movie disguised as a family friendly film. In the first of two stories, a meddlesome cat is roasted by a fire-breathing, wanna-be wizard. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of casting spells is dragon breath! In the second story, an evil toy monkey is stolen from Merlin's shop. Some dumb kid ends up getting it for a birthday present. The evil monkey starts a fire in the garage, which kills the kid's dog. This film was not endorsed by PETA! As the monkey gets stronger, the kid almost gets hit by a car while riding his bike, and his father almost gets killed when he buries the monkey. Merlin provides much needed comic relief, as he spends most of this story asking people if they've seen his monkey! "TIME CHASERS" is the funniest film of the four. Filmed on a shoestring budget in beautiful Rutland, Vermont, the no-name cast makes a valiant attempt to convince the audience that they're traveling through time. Stare in disbelief at the Corporate Executive, whose office is a desk at the top of a stairway in a public library! See the food court of the future! Avert your eyes from the horror of a future apocalypse, as our intrepid heroes walk around garbage in an alley! The main character has a receding hairline. The funniest remark is made by Tom Servo, when the hero turns on his computer. "You've got mail.....pattern baldness!" "THE TOUCH OF SATAN" leaves your hands smooth as you wash dishes, and is presented by the Hallmark Hall Of Fame, at least according to the gang aboard the Satellite Of Love. This lame horror movie is so slow paced and has so many pauses, Mike and the 'bots have more dialog than the actors! After the closing MST3K credits, a snippet of the movie is played. The heroine walks by a pond and says, "This is where the fishes live." This movie would be sleeping with the fishes, were it not for Mystery Science Theater 3000. I hope Rhino releases a Volume 6 Collection of more movies soon.
