Lexx - The Fourth Series, Part 1 (Vols. 1-3)

Summary: A graphic beginning to the last season.
Review: The one thing that sets the fourth season apart from all the others is a graphic tendency for gore. The character of Prince is no longer devious and maniacal, leaning more towards a comical presence. Also, the main characters all fall prey to their personality flaws again and again. A lot of the plotting feels more like a rehash of plots used in seasons two and three. Here are the episodes:

4.01 Little Blue Planet--This is more or less another introduction for an audience already familiar with the characters. The fact that I really don't remember much of this episode is a testament to how utterly uninterested I was when watching it. Who wants to watch a Sci-fi adventure set on this planet, anyway? The Lexx can go anywhere, but we are treated to a parallel Earth, surreal and bizarre and not very humorous.

4.02 Texx LEXX--Xev gives new meaning to the phrase "trailer trash" as four odd-ball Texans vie for Xev's lust with violent results. This is the first episode where I thought the character of Xev was just plain dirty. There is a touch of macabre humor in this one that saves it from the rubbish heap.

4.03 P4X--This episode has its moments, with Xev now in prison and forced to reveal her soul and other parts on a pirate web site. Kai is still looking to save Stan and Xev from themselves, while Stan makes a very improbable escape attempt from the all-powerful ATF. American culture and political groups are subject to parody throughout this final season.

4.04 Stan Down--Everyone makes it back to The Lexx and Stan wants to blow up the planet, being a doomed type 13 planet anyway. Of course, nobody lets him vent his lust for destruction. Instead, he makes a deal with the President of the United States and tries to kill Prince with The Lexx using a small burst of its powerful weapon. Let's just say The Lexx isn't a very good shot.

There are touches of humor here and there throughout these first episodes, and I know for a fact that this series gets better; but after the geniunely entertaining third series this feels like the creators have stumbled out of the starting gate.
