Summary: The beginning of a GREAT series!
Review: If you like ANY british comedy, from Ab Fab to Monty Python, you will LOVE this series. Comedy like this is a real breath of fresh air amidst the likes of all of the cookie-cutter Adam Sandler/Jim Carey garbage that permeates the shelves in most comedy sections of your local store's DVD rack. Starring (before they were stars) Danny John-Jules (Blade 2, Labyrinth, Lock, Stock, and 2 Smoking Barrels) as "Cat", Chris Barrie (Tomb Raider 1 & 2) as "Rimmer", and Craig Charles (Guest star on numerous episodes of East Enders and the P4X episode of Lexx) as the last (and slobbiest) human alive, Lister, along with Norman Lovette as the very likeable (although senile) Holly: "the ship's computer with an IQ of 6000, the same IQ as 6000 PE teachers."
I only give this 4 stars because of 1 BIG thing missing from the first 2 seasons of the show: Robert Llewellyn (author of books such as "The Man on Platform 5", "Thin, he was, and Filthy Haired", "Sudden Wealth", and "Punchbag")didn't join the show (as Kryten, the Andriod) until season 3. Best episode of the set, in my opinion, is the first episode of season 2, KRYTEN (with Andy Ross as Kryten, not as good of a casting job as "Bobby Llew"), featuring an exchange in one scene remeniscent of Monty Python's "Dead Parrot" skit. The extras were great, and the episodes themselves, although you can sort of tell that the actors hadn't fully gotten their roles as of yet, are cleverly written and performed. Season 1 is good, but the show didn't really begin to click until season 2, you can tell that even the studio audience is getting more into it as well.(YES, the first 5 seasons were filmed in front of a LIVE studio audience, so you aren't getting a laugh track as some reviewers (who OBVIOUSLY didn't care to pay attention to the extras) have erroneously claimed. If you know nothing about the show, look it up on imdb.com and see some of the quotes from the show, like THIS one:

Holly: "We're on the emergency back-up supply. We're on the dog's milk."
Lister: "Dog's milk?!?!"
Holly: "Full of nature's goodness. Full of vitamins & minerals, full of meraboan jelly. Lasts longer than any other type of milk, dog's milk."
Lister: "Why's that?"
Holly: "No bugger'll drink it!"
Also, look for the MOTION PICTURE to come out some time in '04.
Extras are excellent, only thing that I wish they would have added, which they may to a later DVD set, is the unaired american Red Dwarf pilot (starring noone of merit). This is a great series, but I wouldn't recommend judging it solely on series 1 & 2 without seeing any of the episodes of series' 3-6
Cat: "Once I find the right SMALL group of girls, the 7 or 8 women who are right for me, my wondering days are OVER buddy!"

"Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!"

Summary: Great picture and extras, Buy it or be a gimboid
Review: Just got these the other day. And of course I couldn't sleep until I had watched them both... with commentary turned on of course.

The picture and sound are excellent. The commentary (by the whole cast no less) is great. They chit chat about the history, what was going on when things were filmed, odd things they remember, etc. Very enjoyable and quite humorous for the Red Dwarf fan. Lots of other interesting extras to explore on the DVD as well. All in all it is a very nicely done DVD. If you are a RD fan, you have no choice but to go buy it. Ace would approve. :-)

My only complaint is that they are only going to release two seasons every year. The wait for the next ones are going to kill me.

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.

Summary: They changed the case design for the stupid yanks!
Review: Like others of you who pass through here, I have been a devotee of Red Dwarf for many years. Only in the past say 5 minutes have I not been absolutely thrilled and giddy at the thought of Dwarf on dvd. My only whinging and puerile complaint is that the spiffy case design where all the cases lined up to spell RED DWARF on the spines got chucked for what appears to be small pics of the cast members. Ah well...the dvd's will probably be perpetually in my player anyway.

"A keychain with a C on it! Thank you! With a capital R!"

Summary: Smeging funny
Review: Low budget sets, low budget special effects, absolutely hilarious. Some may knock the early espisodes for it's low budget look, but to me that is part of the appeal. What stands out is the wonderful writing, while it is a sci-fi take-off the real star of this series is the hilarious dialogue between the crew, the cat and the computer. The first four series are great, the later episodes got a bigger budget, you can tell from the look, but the best episodes are definitley the earlier ones. Another series you can watch over and over and never get tired of it. For those who love Monty Python and Black Adder.

Summary: Not Just For Brits... Brilliant Entertainment!!!
Review: One of single funniest television series' ever produced (and soon to be a Major Motion Picture!) - it originally aired in the United States on public television and then on VHS.

Admittedly, if you have never seen Red Dwarf, the first thing you will notice about the first two series' is that it's charmingly under-budgeted - but fear not, the episodes speak for themselves... and as you delve deeper into the series, they become Better Than Life. You will be utterly shocked at the originality and amazing pace of the entire series, the perfect comedic timing, and the overall infectious addiction it will create within you for the next season's DVD.

If Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers... then buy the ticket and take the ride. By the end of the trip, I guarantee that it'll leave you drooling for more!

Summary: Good stuff!
Review: Personally, i like the first 2 seasons and this set is excellent. Extra features are included, but i have to say (these) British outtakes are not as funny as the american ones i've seen. Buy it if you are into Red Dwarf.

Summary: ORIGINAL Red Dwarf
Review: Please be advised that these episodes are NOT the revised and upgraded (reMastered) versions released in the late 90's. These are the original episodes, complete with original special effects footage, from 1988 and '89. This really doesn't affect the quality of the show as a whole, but it is worth knowing.

Summary: Terrific comedy
Review: Red Drawf, especially seasons 2-4, are some of the best laughs to be found this side of the astroid belt. It's a series that relies on character interaction for humor and not too much on slapstick (but there is some of that, for good measure). I've waited a long time for this series to appear on DVD, and it was worth the wait. The audio and video quality are terrific, considering the shoestring budget on which the first two seasons were made. Now, if they'd just hurry and release seasons 3-4!!!

Summary: Red Dwarf is not for everyone
Review: Red Dwarf is for people who will appreciate the following statement. This show is simply the best "smart dumb Brit humor show" in the history of the world. Well written episodes combined with the most engaging characters ever make for the funniest adventrue/comedy series yet.

Summary: All the smeg you need!
Review: Red dwarf never gets old it's just as funny to this day and with the DVD's you get a few extras, the extras just add to the smeg value of red dwarf and to be honest these DVD's couldnt be much better for content, when you look back on some of the first episodes you cant really remember some with it been that long since it was on tv but they are still just as funny as with Kryton when he was discovered looking after some dead people assuming that they where alive, you cant really help but love the robot that looks like a condoms been placed on his squareish head. So it's worth getting although if you can find it cheaper it would be better as it's pretty expensive.
