Summary: Matrix
Review: I guess The Matrix beats most of the "dumb downed" rubbish spewing out of Hollywood. BUT if you want to see a really good SF, do yourself a favour and check out David Cronenbergs new movie, eXistenZ. This is a much better movie with an intriguing story, good acting and the wonderful organic touch of Mr. Cronenberg.

Summary: good but not great
Review: I had a chance to see Andy and Larry Wachowski's ground breaking thrill ride a minute movie, The Matrix, last night. I have to say that as writers the two brothers are very good Directors.
> The story is fairly straightforward. It seems that our reality is not really our reality but a computer generated one and the year is somewhere close to 2200. The computers harvest babies and use them as giant batteries to keep the computer generated world running as they see fit. A
few special people are able to break out of this dream life and begin their battle against the computers. One group, led by Morpheus, is searching for the mythical "One". A man who will be able to fight the computers with their own strengths and lead humanity back to the pinnacle of life where we once existed. Morpheus believes he has found this person when he finds Neo. The rest of the story details the training of Neo, the discovery of a traitor in their ranks, and the eventual battle between Neo and the Agents of the computer.
> The special effects and the action sequences keep this movie going. Unfortunately nothing truly spectacular occurs in any of these sequences. I am not saying they were bad there have just been better sequences in many other movies.
For the most part the actors do their best with the roles they have been given. Laurence Fishburn tackles the role of Morpheus and gives the performance we have come to expect from him. He is able to draw attention to himself at any time without saying a word and when he speaks his voice wraps itself around you and transports you away with its power. Carrie-Ann Moss plays Trinity. She is, in a word, BAD...and that's good. It has been a long time since we have seen quite as tough a woman in film. Ripley would be proud of her.
> Now we come to Neo. Keanu Reeves has done a good job as an action hero before. This time he is passable but that is all. Some scenes, like when he walks through the metal detector and unleashes an arsenal are great. Other scenes don't work as well. His acting ability has frequently been in question and this is one of those times. The first half of the movie his dazed expression is completely befitting of a character who is bombarded with the information he is receiving. Unfortunately that expression stays on him the rest of the movie. Remember my comments concerning the power of Fishburn's voice? Keanu is not blessed with the same gift. In fact at all times he sounds as if he is stoned beyond belief.
Though the story is silly and meanders off on different tangents I am not saying I disliked this movie. I will say that it wasn't the be all and end all of Sci-Fi/Action movies. However it was relatively entertaining and I am not sorry I went.

Summary: Disapointed
Review: I had heard so much about this movie, that it was so cool. So I watched it. I have rarely been so disapointed. I will start with the good. The sound and special effects are great. The martial arts scenes are decent, but are used to replace the story. The bad. Can you say PLOT HOLES! An example. Neo and company are out to save the world and the imprisoned humans. If this is true, then why does Mouse, when he is trapped, pull out 2 machine guns and start blasting away at deceived people, instead of giving up, and dieing as a martyr. The same is true when Neo and Trinity storm the building. Well, gee, we are out to save these people, so lets blow them all away with a variety of guns. I am sorry, but that doesn't work for me. These are supposed to be martial arts masters. They could just knock the guys out, or disable them. Then there is the bad language. Awful. Way too much. The agents. These are computer programs, and sentient ones at that. Then how, could they miss Neo, when he is hovering in a helicopter and they are standing still, but, as they fly away, Agent Smith blows wholes in the gas tank, or whatever it was, with pinpoint accuracy. Afraid overall, the makers should have concentrated a little more on the plot, and less on the action.

Summary: What Filth!
Review: I had high expectations for this movie! Everybody kept saying that it is the best movie of all time. Well, this movie is one of the worst if you ask me! Sure the idea is great, but plot holes, a lot more talking than action, and the way the film was handled just made this one total crap!
The only exciting part about this movie is the last ten minutes when Neo and Trinity go out and save Morpheus. That's it. Otherwise, it's not worth your time and money!

Summary: Easily the best Sci-Fi movie of the year
Review: I had no idea The Matrix was so good; the previews did not justice to the film.

The Matrix is hyper satisfying on every level. Excellent soundtrack!

Summary: I've rented it 5 times, and can't wait to own it!
Review: I had no preconceived notions of this film. It passed through the theaters without my notice. I'm a 39-yr-old, college educated, mother of two, and I was glad Shakespeare In Love won best picture last year.

What does this have to do with The Matrix? Well, perhaps it will help you understand where I'm coming from when I say I loved this film! Surprised?

I rented it on the advice of my brother, who said he thought I'd like it. Since then, my husband and I have rented it four more times, and we can't wait to own it!

I don't know that I can add much more to the many comments already offered here, and I think you can tell from the reviews that this is a popular one. Sure, it asks you to suspend a few beliefs, but isn't that what science fiction is all about?

Here are my impressions:

a) It's almost like watching two films: the beginning is thought-provoking exposition; the ending is slam-bang, nonstop action.

b) Not for the kiddies: even though the violence is of a comic book type (relatively bloodless), there's lots of punching and showers of spent shell casings. Rated R for a reason.

c) Here's a thought--do you like the TV series La Femme Nikita, by any chance? This film has a similar feel to it.

d) Keanu Reeves plays Neo exactly as he needs to be played. I know Keanu isn't for everyone, but he nailed this part. And Lord help me, the man is so sexy in this movie! Even a pacifist like me stared wide-eyed and slackjawed at the infamous martial arts and gunfight scenes. Ay-yi-yi!

But hey, I'm just a 39-yr-old, married, mother of two putting in her two cents' worth--and I thought The Matrix was top-notch entertainment!

Summary: A spectacular Sci-Fi that will kick you off your seat
Review: I had to actually watch this movie three times to understand the situation. This movie was intense and kept me at the end of the couch every second.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Great special effects but little else.
Review: I had to give it one star, the system won't let you give a zero. This should have just been a computer game instead of a movie. The premise for this movie is just as silly as most of the games I've seen. But I suppose there are enough high tech computer generated special effects, kung-fu fighting and superfluous gunfire to keep the short attention span under 25 crowd happy. It's a torture, however, to watch Keanu Reeves at his wooden worst uttering lines like "Whoa!" and "Whut?". (Along with "Excellent!" and "Bogus!" weren't those also his lines in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure?) I'm sure that this film was a tremendous financial success and will spawn countless sequels and immitators, but all it really reminds me of is some bad acid trips I took in the '70s. "Whoa, what is reality, man?" "Whut?".

Review: I had to watch this movie twice to fully understand it, but it doesn't get any better than this. I haven't seen a movie this good in a long time and I watch a lot of movies. TThis is sure to be one of my all-time favorites.
