Summary: You've Got to See It!!!
Review: Nothing like the original (if I remember correctly), but awesome! Some of the concepts were disturbing but awakening. Great entertainment as well as great social commentary. Excellent acting and special effects.

Summary: Not a good movie
Review: It was a huge disapointment. It was really one of the lamest movies ever. Hands down the worst Tim Burton film (yes even worse than Mars Attacks). This is especially puzling considering how good his last film was (Sleepy Hollow). There was no character development. There was very little action, and what action there was was not clever at all. There was nothing interesting or original about this film in any way. The plot was 100% predictable (actually there really was no plot, just plot devices), the whole thing was just so totally pointless. Maybe kids under 14 who dont care if a movie has a plot or good acting and are just impressed with guys jumping around in ape suits will like this. For adults, this is just an all around bad movie.

Summary: TIM BUTON HAS GONE CRAZY
Review: This was the worst movie I have ever seen. I left the movie theater in shock and disgust. The original movie was way better then this garbage. When I saw the trailer for the movie I thought this looked like a cool moviee. Boy was I wrong. Tim Burton is a good director but this time he just failed to use his brain. If he still has one. This movie is a disgrace to Hollywood. Actually I shouldn't call it a movie I shall now refer to it as the hunk of junk. The hunk of junk's ending was just like out of the Twilight Zone. I suggest you should save yourself some money and rent the original Planet of the Apes.

Summary: Evolution
Review: One of the ideas that the original POTA in '68 so entertainingly messed with was the widely accepted notion that evolution caused things to constantly and certainly get better, become more intelligent, soar higher. The truth is things merely change -- sometimes for the better and sometimes not for the better.

POTA 2001 is a sign that cinematic evolution produces some positive change and some negative change. In the case of this movie, it's mostly negative. I'm a big Tim Burton fan and I was salivating in anticipation of this movie. As a huge fan of the original, I was thrilled that he wasn't trying to remake it but was going to do his own unique take. I thought it would be baroque, intense, and even at times moving.

This is a claustrophobically sound-stage-bound movie, creating a generically sterile alien world with boring cardboard characters. While much of the make-up is astounding, Helena Bonham Carter's ape face looks weirdly fake and rubbery (maybe it's the fact that it's flesh colored and make-up smooth without any oil or perspiration) and David Warner as her father has kind of an Ernest-Borgnine-at-the-end-of-THE-DEVIL'S-RAIN thing going on. Bonham Carter gamely does as much as she can to bring her character to life, but some good writing would have been nice! Give me Kim Hunter with a Rod Serling and Michael Wilson script any day!

Mark Wahlberg is a total cipher as the hero, and this is where the script really cheats us -- in the hero department. His character starts out bland and never gets off the dime. His "plan" for exiting the planet consists of finding a communication device from his downed ship and following the beep. Wow -- how exciting!!! Forget about Heston's Taylor seeking the answers to riddles about how the upside down planet of the apes came about and trying to unravel the mysteries of the existence of the soul and the favor of God ... couldn't Wahlberg's character at least have had to come up with some more interesting ways to outwit the apes than waiting for dark to try to dash through their camp? His character doesn't care about anything but following the signal, and he doesn't have one memorable line of dialogue in the whole damn movie!

This thing is just one huge letdown and it's really too bad because it could have been much, much more.

Summary: A whole lot of work!
Review: This film is amazing! The cinematography was great, and the actors were spectacular. There were times when I was a little disappointed with the movies content because of the little jokes made here and there (sort of dumb sometimes), but overall a spectactular flick. I was disapointed in the ending because it made no sense, but maybe it's so they can create a sequel in the future! Overall, good movie to see.

Summary: Good movie, but not great
Review: I am a huge POTA fan and I did enjoy seeing this movie but I wasn't as impressed with the story as I was with the costumes and make-up detail. The apes looked great! .....including the cameo appearance, which I won't mention to keep from ruining it for others who have not seen it yet. The computer graphics quality of the vehicles in space looked great as well. There were some good parts to the movie and lots of action but a few of the actors could have played a more vital part in the story had their characters been more developed possibly.

Mark Wahlberg does a decent job in my opinion but it seems he is doing what he can with what he has been dealt. I also agree the attack on the apes scene towards the end left a bit to be desired. There was not enough plotting and suspense for this part in my opinion and seemed to be rushed along a bit.

I'm no movie expert, but in my opinion it just seemed to fall a bit short in what it could have been with maybe 15 - 30 minutes more, involving a bit more character and story development without seeming so rushed to wrap up the trailing end portion of the movie.

I would have given this movie 3 stars but the character detail and make-up made me give it a 4 star rating. I do believe it is worth going to see Tim Burton's spin on this tale, but keep an open mind.

Summary: "Get Your Hands Off Me ... "
Review: This reimaging of the classic 1968 "Planet of the Apes" is very well done indeed. The beginning of the movie starts in a very clever way and from there on your drawn into this bizarre adventure. While there seems to be a lot of controversy on the story and what it alls means in the end, love it or hate it you have to admit the special effects, makeup work, and "reimaging" all add up to one of the most exciting movies of the summer.

Summary: BAD BAd Bad bad (with any letters)
Review: This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I love Tim Burton and I love Mark Wahlberg, but man this movie is a pile. I saw part of Kiss of the Dragon the other day and left because the dialogue was so terrible (and I love Luc Besson too!!) and I almost had to do the same here. The dialogue was cheesy, the characters totally undeveloped and everything just stunk, except of course the costumes and set design (Tim will never screw that up). Also, I thought that Mark Wahlberg was really bad in this. He was great in Boogie Nights and Three Kings, but he couldn't act to save his life here. I don't know if this was just a REALLY bad script or if there was something else going on behind the scenes to screw this one up. In any case, if you see it, try to think of it as a comedy, because the movie is so cheesy it's laughable. Man, some of the camera shots are so lame they make you laugh. For instance, every time Mark's character interacts with the female ape Tim shows a lame and really scripted shot of the human female and whenever Marc's character interacts with the human female Tim does the same to the female ape. It's totally undeveloped and lame. Go have a laugh if you must, just be ready to be let down after the killer opening credit sequence.

Summary: Great watch for a weekend
Review: A newspaper critic said he had a problem with the dialogue in this movie.....um.....do you really expect to get good dialogue from a movie with talking apes????? Although there aren't many similarities between this one and the original planet of the apes, this one holds its own too. Great effects, of course, very life like. There are actually a few issues raised about race, and animal cruelty, and some people were upset that these issues weren't taken more seriously in the movie. However I think the fact that there was nobody preaching half the time brought some of the messages home in a subtle manner. And on top of that the movie was highly entertaining, but one or two charachters were completely superfluous to the story and didn't even need to be there. Oh and the ending.....hehe I think Apes II will be interesting to watch too. In conclusion, this movie will dissappoint people who liked the old one, but it's definitely worth a watch
