Summary: WHY WAS THIS MOVIE MADE? that star was begrudgingly given
Review: I have been a fan of the works of isaac asimov for like ten years and when i first read nightfall i thought that it would have made an excellent movie i was very happy after hearing that two asimov novels were making their way to the big screen. and was very pleased with Bicentenial Man even though it was advertised as a comedy and it was not. But this was simply terrible why did they even atatch isaac's name to it if they were not even going to follow the story of the book? the introduction of the mental abilitys, the lack of coheirant exposition and the cutting off of the end of the story were almost as bad as the writing, acting and special affects. this story diserves to be done right and mr corman if you still have the rights turn them over to some one who will. this was beond what i would have concidered a bad interpitation. all the good bits of the story were thrown out for the forbidon love and unnecacery special effects. do not buy this movie unless you want examples of how not to tell a classic science fiction story

Summary: No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. 1000000 times
Review: I love Asimov. When I wandered the aisles at the local rental yard, I though "cool - Asimov!" and rented it.
I really do want my money back, in fact, I want to be paid for my time wasted. I didn't know a movie could possibly be this bad.
This is THE movie that convinced me to never rent anything without checking online reviews by others beforehand. What a TOTAL INSULT TO ONE OF THE GREATEST SCI-FI WRITERS OF ALL TIME. The man who fanticized positronic brains in the '50s which still exist today in the "Data" character on Star Trek, TNG.

I still go to that video rental store, and when I see it still available on their rack, I feel enraged that someone might get [a bad deal] like I did.
There needs to be a warning label, like what is required on a pack of cigarettes, alerting the buyer or renter of the absolutely dangerously putrid nature of this film.
This is THE film that will convince amazon.com to extend their "star" rating system to not only include zero, but negative stars as well.

If only I could puke in plain text, you would see it here.

Summary: Nightfall NOT!
Review: I rate this as 1 star because there appears to be no option for ZERO which is what it is really worth. I can't believe that Isaac allowed his name to be associated with such a corruption of his brilliant original short story. Its this kind of rubbish that gives SciFi a bad name! Come on you Hollywood scriptwriters, how about an Elijah Baley movie such as "The Caves of Steel" or "The Naked Sun", and stick closely to Asimovs story line this time.

Summary: Rented for kicks - wanted my money back!!!
Review: I rented it, came home, and read some reviews before I popped it into the DVD player. I especially loathed the one that said "rent it for kicks". Well, in short, the only kicks I got were from myself - kicking my own butt for renting such a flick. I wish I could return it and get my money back for the rental. I can only leave you with a few colorful adjectives that best describe this movie. Miserable, terrible, aweful, dark, small, smelly, and sick. Finally and interjection: AAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!! I wonder if [there is] a worst movie ever category - this one is really a contender.

Summary: Run-- Do Not Walk Away from this film...
Review: I was a big Asimov fan and made the mistake of seeing this film when it came out in the cinema, since it was the first movie made from an Asimov idea since "Fantasic Voyage" YUCK! Over half the audience LEFT the movie and by the time it was over I wished I had, too.

This movie has nearly NOTHING to do with the original novella and undoubtedly was the major reason that no other works of Asimov have been adapted to film (even though they are among the most deserving to be adapted)

I continuously wondered throughout the film what major chemicals the cast and crew were consuming throughout the production. The acting, the cast and the production values are among the worst I have ever seen outside of old 8mm student films with budgets of less... I think we have a film here that can easily displace "Plan 9 From Outer Space" as the worst movie of all time.

Please boycott this film.

Summary: A heart-breaking rape of a masterpiece of fiction
Review: If you are a fan of Asimov, or have read and liked either the short story or the novel - don't buy this DVD. It is perhaps the worst adaptation I could even imagine. You will find only heartbreak and disappointment here.

The story that this was based on is rightly known as one of the (if not THE) best science fiction story ever written. Asimov takes the reader into the mind of a culture and unfolds a mystery of epic proportion. The reader is left with just enough to keep the heart pounding and not enough to kill the interest in the next chapter. It is simply a masterful piece of fiction.

In my mind this story is worthy of a remake at the quality of Lord of the Rings. However, it seems to have been sold to a low rent film mill.

I was amazed that this story became very, very boring. Special effects were totally gratuitous and (sorry) stupid. Carradine is totally TOTALLY flat. His lines seemed more like dry runs or dress rehearsals than final cuts. Sometimes I wondered if he had just said "One take only guys".

It seemed like there was a pressure to turn this into some freakish, sword slashing, blood and guts action flick (by the way, the blood looked like Pepto Bismal folks). Nowhere is there evidence of the psychological reasons that this calamity within the story will happen. It just sort of happens.

I am usually very easy to please with my reviews. I can usually find good in most things. Rarely do I give such poor reviews (check my other reviews). However, I would not only like to give less than 1 star, I would also like to yell and scream at everyone involved in this production for having killed my hope of seeing this fine story put on film. I was horrified by the end product. I honestly don't even think they tried to do a good job.

At best it is a boring, nonsensical, disaster of a film - a very bad 'B' film. At worst it is an unforgivable rape of a beloved story. When given such an opportunity, to translate such an important work of fiction (and it -is- that important) I see it as a responsibility to treat it respectfully. Perfection is not required, but respect is.

Summary: Not That Bad
Review: No, it is not the classic story written by Asimov. In fact, it seems very loosely based on it. Apart from this fact, the movie is mildly entertaining and NOT the terrible anti-classic that most of the other people writing reviews seemed to think. Overall a decent movie, decently acted.

Summary: Terrible Film
Review: OK, I'm an Asimov fan and I have no delusion that a movie will be anything like his writing. But boy is this a bad film. Shot badly and acted badly with the exception of Joseph Hodge in the male lead. Terrible acting, editing, photography. Poor Isaac, had he only known! Does Corman try to make the worst films known to man? Well this one is a success story if that is his aim. Rent it for kicks.
