Summary: WOW!
Review: This is the ultimate DVD video. The first thing I noticed with this movie was the sound, it absolutely explodes with it. The special effects are amazing, they are the real star of this movie. This is one of those films that grabs you and sucks you in. The story is a little far fetched but, thats what makes it fun. There are a whole lot of extras on this DVD, well worth the $18-20. If you like action, this film is for you!

Summary: A Fantastic Movie
Review: This is the ultimate in SciFi. Though, I think they borrowed a great deal from the World of Darkness gaming system. It's very much like "Mage".

I was a little worried when I first heard that Keanu Reeves was in this movie. He's a terrible actor. He's monotone, and ruined what could've been an otherwise good film in A Walk in the Clouds. However, somehow... they managed to make a fantastic movie, with him involved. Others have noted, and I also point out, that Keanu really doesn't speak much in this show. He does a lot of posing and looking cool... perfectly appropriate for the film, and has a lot of short lines. Somehow the Director made it work, and Keanu was very good in the role. I recommend this movie highly, on VHS or DVD.

Summary: Messed up, but good
Review: This is truly a wonderful movie but bear in mind that the Matrix is made up of three things:
a Magnificent idea--the world is a hoax, we are actually living in virtual reality while our bodies generate power for an artificial intelligence--basically a Skynet wannabe of Terminator 2,
Marvelous special effects and appearances--all the actors and actresses chosen (Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishborne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and others) definitely look their parts,
and Miserable acting! The punches sound wrong, sob-scenes are plentiful, people try to act tough and fail miserably, and a multitude of other screw-ups. One major problem is--an all knowing, all seeing oracle, who the heroes depend on for guidance, for all her vast intelligence and wisdom, is shown smoking cigarettes!

Summary: Somebody pinch me I think I'm in Movie Heaven
Review: This is without a doubt the greatest movie I have ever seen. It has an engrossing plot and gets better everytime I watch it. Everytime i see this movie I learn new things about the plot. And if either Andy or Larry read this, I'm really looking foward to the sequel.

Summary: The Matrix. Almost revolutionary.
Review: This is, without a doubt, one of the best movies to be released in 1999. It's a visionary tale about mankind, that has superb tecnical values. My only complaint it's it's thin screenplay. It has great ideas but if it were a little more consistent and complex, the Wachowsky Brothers could have made a revolution on SF genre. But, as it's stands, it's an excelent movie. With outstanding special effects and great camera work all around. The actors manage to give good performences, specially Laurence Fishburn. It's pace keeps the spectator amazed every minute of it. Visionary, outstanding look but thin in plot (although the plot it's very interesting, it is very short and little complex...) this is a must have for any science fiction fan. The best since Dark City... A cult movie that has very little weaknesses.

Summary: Don't THINK you are...KNOW you are.
Review: This isn't another geeky science fiction movie like star track or whatever. This movie is PHAT no mattter what. Everyone be talking bout this movie! For real if you haven't seen this movie then just go rent it. It's not that big of a deal to rent it. I think...no I know you will be surprised how tight this movie is.

Summary: A philosophical masterpiece
Review: This masterpiece of a movie is of ineffable genius; it is rare to see a film so densely packed with multiple meanings, which like a baroque composition, the more you listen the more subtle insights are gained-an intellectual delight. And neither is it too obstruse to understand! Indeed, since it has so many levels, it would be a great movie for even the less perceptive and imaginative of action moviegoers. This movie deserves to be shown in college philosophy and political science classes, not just film. It is in fact a powerful artistic expression of an actual situation, of the dynamics of the system we now find ourselves immeshed in and struggle with in different ways. No doubt, like Neo, many of us who watch the film, can feel as Neo felt-that there is something going on, etc. but cant put your finger on it. This is because it powerfully resonates with truism, truths many of us would rather not be made aware of, hence the lure of the "matrix" and our fear of being "unplugged" from it.

Many people have interpreted a biblical/Christian message out of it, but I disagree. It is not saying that reality is false, that we create reality and by expanding our minds we can simply create another reality behind the reality. No, the reality is created for us, a false reality, a false consciousness, but material reality objectively exists independently of us. How it manifests in our consciousness is more the point. We can break free from the illusions of what we have been conditioned to believe is "reality," but seeing the truth comes at personal costs, and usually impels us to struggle for change and face repression. This is a basic Marxist tenant. What Marx called the 'superstructure" of a society, is the culture, ruling ideas, institutions, politics, etc., that creates a false consciousness but are functional to existing power relations, reinforced by existing social relations that stem from its production relations. Yes, exploitation is an integral part of world capitalism, and we are like batteries for the system-an accurate allegory to surplus value. Yet, we are hidden from many of its ugly facets around the globe and a rosy picture is instead created for mass consumption. The media "manufactures consent." We become sheep, plugged in to this nexus and once you unplug, it is hard to go back to this dream word of ignorant bliss. Make no mistake, the Matrix is here with us now. This movie is more like a leftist documentary about class struggle than a sci.fi film per se, and it is brilliantly done to include the many subtle philosophical and political elements that are involved. If you saw this film and didn't like it, go see it again and again and again. Sooner or later, you too will break out of the matrix!
