Summary: Very funny.
Review: Very funny movie. Sound is excellent on DVD, picture also very good. Verhoven's commentary pretty boring, however -- talks too much about technical details and repeats himself often. Some very minor deleted scenes and a few screen tests are mildly amusing. Superior to Robocop.

Summary: This is one of the worst movies ever made
Review: This movis is terrible. It's plot seems to be aimed at three year olds but it so violent it would give them nightmares. I don,t know what kind of target audiance they were aiming at.

Summary: Special effects extravaganza equalled by few.
Review: I couldn't give Starship Troopers 5 stars, no matter how much I really, REALLY wanted to (really), for reasons that most of the negative reviews have all ready covered. Yes, devout Heinlein fans will be disappointed (as I was) in the less than word for word transformation from novel to big screen. And yes, let's face it, "Gone With the Wind" it's not, and no one could possibly have been surprised when none of the ensemble cast were nominated for an Oscar for the performances that any of them gave. Still others objected to the "fascist" politics of S.T.'s worldwide government. But, personally speaking, this is the one aspect of all the negatives written that I feel is full of something brown and smelly. Speaking as a veteran, I actually kind of liked the idea of the rewarding of an elevated status and benefits equal to the sacrifices that members of the armed forces were prepared to make in the service of their country (a statement, I'm sure, that those possessing a more liberal bent will find highly objectionable.) But ultimately, Starship Troopers is simply a high tech story of good versus evil; mankind fighting for its survival against the alien insects bent on their extinction. But after all is said and done, this is a special effects movie. After all of the nay-saying, after all of the over-analyzing, the saviors of Starship Troopers are the effects wizards who turned out some of the most amazing special effects on film, either before or since. Astounding enough, by themselves, to easily rank a four star rating.

Summary: One of the best sci-fi movies I've seen
Review: Got this movie looking for a B-type shoot-em-up, and for the first hour that's just what I thought it delivered. But it kept getting odder and odder and the end just blindsided me. Don't get drunk or let your attention waver -- this movie is subversive, and like all good subversive stuff, it'll get right past you if you aren't watching. If it weren't rated R I'd recommend it *strongly* to high school teachers looking for thematic material on propaganda or anti-war literature. As it is it would be appropriate in a community college or undergraduate setting. (Note that it is only very loosely based on the book)

Summary: First "Total Recall"
Review: desecrated the memory of Philip K. Dick, and now this! Word of advice to the estate of Isaac Asimov and all other dead sf masters: if Verhoven comes snooping around, run! Run for your life!

I can justify the 1 star instead of zero by virtue of the shower scene. Gratuitous nudity always makes me think a little more kindly toward a movie. As a whole, however, this film's intelligence level is aimed directly at people about 10 years too young to see it,

Summary: The best way to see it is on DVD.
Review: ....or at least in letterbox VHS. This movie is too big for pan and scan. Tons of special effects; lots of action and meyhem. The commentary by the director and writer proved interesting. Beneath all the eye candy there is a message. The director makes it clear that this is an anti-fascism movie. I always thought that the movie was talking about the nazis. I was surprised to discover that the creators (not Heinlein) were commenting on U.S. military policy since the end of WW2. I don't completely agree with what they are saying; but I understand their point of view. I also found it interesting that the creators were also commenting on how governments urge the young to cheerfully go of to war. The commentary provides much food for thought and gave a lot of behind the lense insight into the production. The extra goodies like deleated scenes and screen tests also afford viewers a glimpse into the film-making process. The transfer is crisp and the sound is great. All in all, a great DVD.

Summary: not the book; better on video
Review: The previous reviewer who said this is faithful to the book obviously never read the book. As an adaptation the movie sucks; taken on its own, it is much better. Some parts work very well, some are weak. I found I liked it quite a bit better on video because I was able to fast forward through those weaker parts.

Summary: Squalid travesty
Review: Heinlein was not exactly a second Socrates but he was a serious and often original writer. This is a squalid travesty and plainly a labour of hatred. Heinlein's ideas are mendaciously distorted. SF fans should avoid it, both for its defamation of the work of a major writer and for its bad science.

Summary: Good specials effects but no more
Review: The visuals effects made by industrial light & magic are excellent but the script is so simple that fall down in the middle of the story. The actors are pretty bad and the direction is not under control. Well, if you are a fan of the specials effects, you will enjoy but if you are a person who like a movie with a good story, you will hate that.
