Rating: Summary: It JUST Sucks! Review: I watched this too long movie just because it is a J.Cameron film. But it was a sheer frustration. I am very sorry to spend my 2.5 hours for it. It is just a waste of time. Don't watch it. It is full of ridiculous scenes. Slam a dead person and watch her bring back to life! Isn't it be to stupid? Too many sub-plots. Too many dialogs. Everyone in the movie talks in every occasion. Only when Bud dives into the abyss we can have some silence. Please don't watch this. It is nothing but a waste of time!
Rating: Summary: Anthony Michaels review of "The Abyss" Review: Now, if you want a good movie... here it is. James Cameron and Ed Harris bring the world a movie full of enjoyment, inspiration and above all - entertainment. The special effects are dazzleing, but as I've said in other reviews - that's not what makes a movie great. The story of this film is original, fantastic and creative. It's got just the right amount of action - not too much, but not too little. The same with it's drama, romance and science fiction. As I've said at the beginning of the review, if you want a good movie... here it is.ALSO STARRING ED HARRIS The Right Stuff Apollo 13

Rating: Summary: Abyss DVD Delivers Review: The ABYSS was a big risk. The entire film (with the exception of some SPECIAL EDITION footage) was filmed off of dry land, but rather underwater or aboard sea-faring vessels. It also contains huge special effects sequences and large set pieces. All of this combined into a very expensive film, very difficult to make. There are 3 stories colliding in the Abyss... the least interesting involves the shattered marriage between Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Matstrantonio as Bud and Lidsay. The Second and most successful storyline involves the oil rig crew joining up with Navy SEALS to retrieve nuclear warheads from a sunken submarine. The final story is the science fiction element, an underwater race that makes first contact with the initiation of the film. After a pretty long journey with great special effects and exciting tension, the three stories all come to an aligned ending. The biggest complaint stated about the film was that rarely did all three stories speak to its viewers... They either wanted more or less sci-fi... Cut or expand the romance... Enhance or decrease the thriller tension. To answer some of these requests, this spectacular DVD includes the Special Edition which includes an extra 28 minutes of additional footage. Some of the footage was cut for obvious reasons and very little of it improves the story. Still, its great to have both versions at your fingertips. Yes, this DVD set is loaded with great documentaries, the complete screenplay and even 3 silly games that are not worth hunting for. The only thing missing is an audio commentary. The 5.1 THX Sound is great as is the video transfer. It is the step above the LaserDisc release although with that you did have a James Cameron Approved Pan and Scan version that was extremely watchable. "Raise You Hand if you think that was a Russian Water Tentacle!"
Rating: Summary: Need the Anamorphic version to see true Abyss Review: This is a great film, however, being the owner of a widescreen television, it's a shame the DVD sharpness is lost. I brought the DVD assuming it would be "formated for widescreen tv" (it does says exactly that on the bottom of the DVD box. Yet it is not really anamorphic. For those of you who don't know what anamorphic means, you will once you invest some money on a widescreen television. Trust me...it's worth waiting for an anamorphic DVD version. Any movie I buy must say anamorphic(or made for 16x9 televisions). If you don't have a 16x9 tv yet, but plan to buy one in the next few years, I recommend you start building your DVD collection with only anamorphic enhanced DVD's. I'm so upset that I can't maximize my Abyss DVD. I'm even more upset they still haven't come out with the anamorphic version. The Abyss movie is so good I refuse to watch it at a lesser quality.
Rating: Summary: Sci-fi action with an emotional core Review: James Cameron infuses his action/sci-fi films with real humanity more successfully and consistently than any other filmmaker. This film tells the story of an isolated group on the ocean floor who must both investigate the sinking of an American nuclear submarine and deal with the mysterious aliens that they encounter. Ed Harris plays the supervisor on Deepcore, an undersea oil drilling rig. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is the rig's designer as well as Harris' ex-wife. Antagonism leads to rekindled passion during the extraordinary adventure that they endure. There is one great action set piece after another, some exciting technology (such as breathable fluid) and an effective emotional core to the story. The culminating sequence, wherein Harris sinks to the bottom of the abyss with only Mastrantonio's voice to accompany him, is more moving than the endings of many supposedly more serious dramas.
Rating: Summary: Good movie! Review: If you havn't seen The Abyss, go for it! This movie is such a treat plus with the extra long ending it really is neat. The only thing I didn't like was the "Hidden Moral of the Day Kids!" twards the end. I'm for saving the enviroment and human race etc.. but this was alittle hokey. "Man kind is so evil, but you are hope!" they don't say that but.. you will know what I mean.
Rating: Summary: Another Cameron Masterpiece Review: It's a film with some of the most influential visuals in film history. Great Oscar-worthy performances by Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. A story so spectacular it becomes ingenious. Now, with a special edition (all 30 minutes of extra footage included) "The Abyss" is another Cameron masterpiece. Cameron's more recent blockbuster/masterpiece "Titanic" is highly questioned and criticized. But that's probably all jealousy for it being the most successful film (everyone wants their own favorites to have that same popularity). Here is Cameron most underrated and unknown masterpiece (Special Edition not Theatrical Version).
Rating: Summary: Fantastic DVD of a great movie Review: James Cameron's The Abyss is an outstanding movie, and it is even better with this DVD.It contains both the original theatrical version along with the director's cut that adds 28 minutes of extra footage.I actually preferred the director's cut as it added greatly to the story in my opinion. There are loads of special features including an hour long making of special that was very interesting. The sound quality is absolutely stunning and the picture is very good as well. As for the movie itself it is very exciting, with a great cast(including Ed Harris,Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn),exciting story, great(and very cutting edge in 1989)special effects, and a fine musical score by Alan Silvestri. Overall a great DVD and not to be missed!
