Summary: The best DVD yet released
Review: Now I'm not going to get all Cameron-happy and gush about how fabulous he is. I thought Titanic was overblown and that T2 was a bit of a sprawling mess. The Abyss, I feel, however is his best work - tight, involved and thrilling, with Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio giving performances of their lives. I loved this film when it first came out, and loved it even more on VHS. Imagine my joy when I saw it released on DVD - something special, I hoped. Something special it was. The picture and sound are exceptional - crisp and clear in both regards. The extras are a sheer joy to use and behold - I emerged from my house two days after having received the disc, bearded and half-blind - there's just SO MUCH on it! Now all they need to do is include JC himself with a commentary, and we've got ourselves THE perfect DVD. Thank you FOX. Everyone else (you listening Paramount/Warner/Disney?) take note.

Summary: This is how DVD's should be done.
Review: With a flawless transfer, multiple versions, scripts, documentaries and background information galore, this disk is the best presentation of a movie on DVD I have ever seen.

The movie itself is probably Cameron's fourth best, behind Aliens and both Terminators, but still vastly superior to True Lies or Titanic. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio give first rate performances, the supporting cast is solid, but Michael Biehn's wigged-out Navy SEAL is too much over the top.

The Special Edition is clearly the only version to watch, although I wish they would have included the wave and left out of the other scenes, which don't add nearly as much to the film.

Summary: Close Encounters Down Under
Review: Fantastic. This is what DVD is all about. The directors cut ties all things together. Both versions are on the disk. Audio is great, even just in good old stereo. Why they did not release the longer version, g-d only knows. But then again we all know why. Rent it. Trust me, after you see it you will add it to your collection. Blows Titanic out of the water. I guess people don't think Ed Harris is as good looking as Leo. Did not even look at the second disk yet.(X-tra features) Enjoy, You only live once.

Summary: TH E ABYSS, AN INSTANT CLASSIC
Review: THE ABYSS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. THE SPECIAL EFFECTS, THE STORY, EVEN THE MUSIC IS WONDERFUL. JAMES CAMERON, THE DIRECTOR OF THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS , TERMINATOR 2, TRUE LIES, AND TITANIC DIRECTED THIS FILM. THE SPECIAL EDITION CONTAINS NEARLY HALF AN HOUR OF NEVER BEFORE SEEN FOOTAGE. ALSO, IT CONTAINS A DIFFERENT ENDING. I WON'T SPOIL IT FOR YOU BUT ITS SPECTACULAR! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU BUY THIS MOVIE! IT IS BY FAR, ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME.

Summary: The Editor did a good Job.
Review: The three stars are pretty much for the features on the DVD, the theatrical version of this film is pretty average and the special edition is just corny and boring. All the added scenes would have been better left on the cutting room floor. Watch the special edition before reading about the added scenes and you will see what I mean.

Summary: James Cameron should have stopped here...
Review: The Abyss is one of the best films I have ever seen. Every word in the script has a meaning to it, and the relationship between Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio ends up saving the day. The cinematography is compelling; and it is so vivid that if it were to be put in IMAX format, you'd feel like you are actually swimming around 30,000 feet under the ocean's surface. I like this movie because it does something which I feel is unique. The real plot is about the creatures living deep within the abyss, and the subplot is the recovery mission. But unlike Aliens--a movie that within fifteen minutes was filled with swearing, fire, blood, and a lot of noise--Cameron makes the audience stew a little before the real purpose of the movie is uncovered. The movie begins with a submarine being ambushed by a UFO--"underwater flying object"--and since the navy does not know what happened--they suspect "the Russians"--Cameron does not feel the need to reveal to anyone (including his characters) that there is something waiting for them in the dark depths of the ocean. Just when you thought the movie would be near a predictable end, along comes the bait-and-hook of a sighting. It leaves the audience wondering "What was that? Why is he showing this and then taking it away?" There is the movie's charm! Cameron gives you what you need to understand the motive of the aliens' appearances, while keeping you in suspense as to when you will finally get to the point of their existence.

You have to have patience with the movie, though. The pace may be a little slow, but then again, who cares? The effects are fantastic and the performances are magnificent. The slowness of the pace, in my opinion, is to see how long YOU can last underwater. The characters are people who pretty much make a living underwater. If in three hours of seeing nothing but a closed in frame that is the difference between life and 100,000 lbs of pressure crushing your fragile body, then working on a deep-sea oil rig is not for you.

But in honesty, Cameron lost my respect after Titanic. (I will not be reviewing Titanic right now, don't worry.) The Abyss was a fantastic movie that is at the peak of Cameron's career, and I cannot see how the person that created such a magnificent work of art went ahead and did something as pointless as a script that 90% of the words were "Jack" and "Rose." If you ask me, Cameron should have retired after this movie. I will be very very suprised if he ever even comes close to matching this wonderful masterpiece of cinema.

Summary: This movie has 10 times the meaning with the directors cut..
Review: The first time I saw this, my original thought was that it was a great movie with a bad, short, obviously cut off ending. It was bad enough that I had no desire to see it again. But hey, guess what, the ending WAS cut short! I knew it! Grabbed the DVD special edition and bingo! WOW! This movie does have meaning to it! It is incredible how much just a few minutes can add to the movie as a whole. BTW If for anything else, you have to get this movie for the "wave" shot (that was originally cut)!

Summary: SAD ENDING...
Review: I have only the VHS, and I must say the end ruined this movie, which was following so tight, well crafted and with good actin (although I think Mastrantonio ia a very bad actress). Anyway, I'll seek a DVD edition for myself, to understand what the reviewers below are talking about. To say this movie is better than "TERMINATOR - JUDGEMENT DAY" is a kind of heresy, but , well, who knows...?

Summary: The Abyss That Missed
Review: The movie took way too long to get to anything half-way exciting. It could have been cut down to 30 minutes!
