Rating: Summary: Still looks Excellent on a big screen TV. Review: Hard to believe that this movie made 22 years ago still holds up but it does. It is a dark movie, lightingwise, but on my HD big screen TV it still looks great. Sean Connery is superb as the loner Marshall aboard a space mine on a moon of Jupiter. When the bad guys find that they can't control him, which means ignore his duty, they send assassins to kill the marshall. Connerys only friend is the spacey doctor...Some had called it slow moving, but the tension that builds helps to emphasize the hopelessness of the situation. This is also a story of doing the right thing instead of drinking the koolaid for the party or the company. The values taught in this movie are slowly being obliterated, so admire this marshall that takes a stand and that others must obey the law.

If the two movie High Noon and Blade Runner (though Bladerunner has made after Outland) could have a baby, that offspring would be this movie. Rating: Summary: Atmospheric and Gritty Sci-Fi Shoot'em Up -Bad DVDTransfer!! Review: I basically mirror the comments of previous reviewers who give this film high marks for storyline and action. My main complaint is the outrageous quality of the transfer over to DVD. I have yet to come across a DVD that has such terrible image quality. It is like looking at an old VHS tape. Image outlines shimmer and fluctuate. Lighting and shadow effects darken and lighten. Sound quality is OK in my opinion. Nonetheless, the image quality is an annoying distraction which degrades the overall enjoyment of this finely done Sci Fi thriller. If you must get this DVD, write to Warner Studios and tell them how lousy a job they did on this DVD transfer. This film deserved much better attention to image quality. I am sure many of you would have screamed bloody murder if "Alien" had been so poorly done. Warner needs to come out with an "Outland SE" to rectify this problem. ...

Rating: Summary: Surprisingly competent and overlooked film Review: I don't know too much about ths history of this film, usffice to say that it isn't regarded as a clasic by most casual sci-fi buffs. On the other hand, it is a very well-done and soundly made film. I personally liked the grittiness and functionality of the movie, which I think is why it has survived the test of time so well. Often times movie makers will attempt to make the show look really realistic and eliminate all vestiges of normal, 20th century life, but that always ends up looking worn and dated (a la Star Trek). On the other hand, here you have guys smoking, drinking, swearing, wearing ball caps and who still play raquetball and golf, but at the same time wear spacesuits and live on some distant mining colony. It is this grounding in reality which helps the other, more dramatic effects succeed. The performances are solid (with Sean Connery in a sci-fi film for once), and although I can understand where some of the pacing-based criticisms comes from (nearly half the film is the climactic gunfight/chase between Connery and the bad guys), overall I think it is a well-done and often overlooked film that deserves more atention.
Rating: Summary: OUTLAND: The Ultimate Enemy Is Still Man Review: I like this film because it shows another side to a futurecop movie that moves realisticly. If you enjoyed blade runner, it's possible you'd might like Outland, that is only if you enjoy watching Sean Connery in action. I was fascinated with this movie when I was kid, because I had never seen sean connery in a science fiction film before, so it was something new to me. I like the idea of him being secluded from all the rest, and he is the only one being hunted. It's a good movie some favorite parts, are the meatlocker scene(hows that for a blow?) the "green house effect" (LOL) and the ending is awesome.
Rating: Summary: I liked Outland quite a bit. Review: I liked the fact that Outland had the same sort of "space is grubby" production design ethic that Alien had. I think the fact that nothing was shiny and gleaming and new helped ground the movie. We all know that if we go to space as a race, it is going to be dirt and grime and filth and all the way. ***SPOILER ALERT*** ***SPOILER ALERT*** The only thing I did not like about the film was the plot holes you could drive a Space Shuttle through. The worst (or best, depending on how you look at it) example of the filmmakers checking their brains at the door came during the sequence in which the "Professional" is hunting down Connery's character. The "Professional" pursues Connery into the greenhouse, or so he thinks. Connery is outside in a spacesuit, and he drops a solar panel just outside the greenhouse glass. The "Professional" spots the falling panel and, in an unthinking reaction, shoots out the glass, evacuating the air from the greenhouse! Do I even need to point out everything that is wrong with that scene?

Rating: Summary: One "washed-up" man against overwhelming odds Review: I love "dark" gothic movies, especially sci-fi types. It constantly amazes me how supposedly intelligent and sophisticated movie watchers feel like every movie they watch has to be fast-paced and stylish to be good. A slow-winding plot adds to the tension, and slow subtle coversations, heavy with innuendo and veiled threats are absolutely necessary when one wants to write about a man trying to expose corruption. He must proceed cautiously if he is to survive. I think, the movie scores by being gritty, tense, slow and almost "awkward". Connery portrays a man on the edge of retirement, lacking confidence, feeling like a loser. His performance is dead-on. All these together give it a feel of realism, by seeming like such a story as we might observe unfolding in our own time and place. Americans are brain-frozen by action movies. This is a dark sci-fi DRAMA, and a good one at that
Rating: Summary: HEADACH ANYONE? Review: I saw this movie a long time ago, and liked it. When I saw it for DVD I bought it. 110 mins. later I tossed it with some junk in the garage for my garage sale I plan to have. Nothing against the story, or the acting, or special effects, but this movie took no advantage of the format at all. I dare you to lock your eyes at a fixed point on the screen. The picture wiggles all over the place making the viewer uneasy and agitated. Not to mention dark and grainy sceans. It's too bad, but don't waste your time.
