Rating: Summary: Nonstop action fills the bill, but that's all you get Review: This DVD was recommended by a friend who loved the DD soundtrack and the action. My system has Dolby Surround, and that soundtrack is also excellent. The action never stops, and the special effects are well done. This film is meant to be a popcorn type movie that entertains and is fun to watch. It succeeds well for that purpose. It could have realized a greater potential if there had been more originality. Most of the special effects are just a re-do of things we've seen before, but there is so much action, I didn't care. The DVD is very well done, and has a very interesting special feature with a voice-over soundtrack that explains how the special effects were created. My subjective ratings of the following explain my 3 star rating. Better acting would have helped a great deal. There were many attempts at humorous dialog which didn't quite work. Special effects..**** Entertainment value..*** Originality..** Acting..* Script..* DVD production.......****
Rating: Summary: Not enough fire-breathing destruction! Review: Good flic but I really did want to see some more fire-breathing. If you enjoy chaos this is a quality flic, if you enjoy traditional Godzilla you may have to look elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: Fun to watch and entertaining! Review: People who watch "Godzilla" shouldn't take this movie so seriously! Its purpose is clearly to be enjoyed. This movie is meant to be fun to watch and entertaining, and that's exactly what "Godzilla" did to millions of people around the world. Grrr!!
Rating: Summary: GODZILLA ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I loved it!!! It was great!!!!!! The old godzilla movies were a bore and the special effectst were a snoze but this one rocks!!!!!!!! It's da' bomb!!!! I love action and the plot was great! I loved the characters, especially Matthew Roderick. I also liked Reno. I give this movie 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: What's the point? Review: He doesn't look, sound or even behave like Godzilla! So you have to ask, what's the point? If they renamed this "Jurassic Park 3: Attack of the Giant Computer Generated Lizard", I suppose you could write this off as mindless effects yuks. There are much better ways to spend a couple of hours.
Rating: Summary: The Biggest Lizard - An Even Bigger Disappointment Review: "Godzilla" is the worst of Hollywood come to staggeringly horrible life. "His Head is as Big as This Bus", "His Tail is as Long as This Train". Okay, well, "The Plot is as Dumb as This Box of Nails" and "The Leaps of Logic are as Big as Orson Welles (during his later years)". This is the most ridiculous, most disappointing movie I have ever seen. Not that "StarGate" and "Independence Day" were works of art, but they were at least mindless FUN. There is not one scene in "Godzilla" that can say the same. No explanation is given why the over-grown iguana chooses New York, never mind Madison Square Garden, in which to build a nest. One suspects that it is simply to allow Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich to satiate their landmark-destroying fetish. As for the other carnage, there isn't much. The original Godzilla seemed to relish wreaking havoc - this new version is more content to burrow (yes, burrow) underneath the Big Apple and run, for the most part, BETWEEN the buildings, like he's reliving the Yankees' ticker tape parade. The only time he really wrecks anything is when the helicopters are chasing him. At that point, you can't even blame the big guy for taking down a skyscraper or two. Matthew Broderick leads a cast that seems awed by the movie's level of mediocrity. It's not their fault, but they are all horrible (except for the always amazing Harry Shearer). In order to raise the level of this material, they would have needed a Death Star's tractor beam (actually, three or four of them). And to make matters worse (believe it or not), half way through the film, Godzilla disappears and "Jurassic Park 3" starts, as raptors, er, I mean baby 'zillas chase our heroes (AND YOU CAN'T HELP BUT ROOT FOR THE LITTLE BEASTIES). Actually, now that I think about it, the whole flick is a mish-mosh of better monster movies. Godzilla snorts on our hero, just as T-Rex did in "Jurassic Park". An egg-head scientist with girl troubles saves the day (hello, "Independence Day"). The soundtrack of Godzilla's death scene mirrors the Jessica Lange remake of "King Kong". Need I say more? Actually, no, but I will anyway. Mr.s Devlin and Emmerich, leave the sequel in the can. Please.
Rating: Summary: A classic monster movie Review: How any true Godzilla fan could hate this movie is beyond me. It delivers in many important ways, most notably the monster. Godzilla, as he is here, is perhapse the most impresive screen monster yet. Yes the movie has its problems. The acting is stale at times, the destruction could have been a bit more wholesale, and I would be the last person on earth to complain if Godzilla had had atomic breath. But at the same time the chase scenes are intense, Godzilla's new look is great, Godzilla is also remarkably intellegent, and the Babyzilla's provide a rational for Godzilla coming to New York. All in all a darn good movie. And a damn fine Godzilla movie! The best this genre has produced in over 50 years. Go, go Godzilla
Rating: Summary: Good even for nonmonster lovers. Review: This movie was better than I thought it would be. I was expecting something more along the lines of the old Godzilla movies and was pleasantly surprised. The monster was really neat looking and the special effects were great. The plot was predictable but entertaining. I would recommend this movie for anyone who would like to see a good remake of an old classic.
Rating: Summary: AWFUL MOVIE I'D RECOMMEND WATCHING THE OLD GODZILLA MOVIES Review: I would recommend watching the old GODZILLA movies 1st before watching this version of GODZILLA. I mean this ingunia wannabe doesn't breathe fire even. I found myself wishing I had rented one of the old GODZILLA movies first. What I mean is the acting is poor espically the guy who plays the mayor of NEW YORK in this movie. The guy acts like a total wimp when faced with this 200 FT IGUNIA I mean reallisticlly I found myself laughing at him even when the actor potraying him tries to be serious. Also MATTHEW'S BRODERICK'S acting is subpar at most as is his costars in this film. So all in all if you want a great movie, rent one of the old GODZILLA films or ARMAGEDDON instead.
Rating: Summary: good effects, but a waste of time Review: I thought the efects in godzilla were awesome, but other than that, the movie was just plain. The was no story, the characters werent great, and the scene in the garden was like a remake from Jurassic Park.
