Summary: Dreadful piece of dreck
Review: A trivia question. What movie knocked Titanic from it's record number of weeks at No. 1 at the box office? Lost In Space. Which is particularly amazing since it is one of the worst movies and waste of talent and celluloid every to (dis)grace a cineplex near you. While light years more sophisticated in terms of special effects than the original TV series on which the movie is based, it is a movie that is as convoluted and pathetically contrived as any in recent memory. While all movies require some degree of suspension of disbelief, this movie does not even have a reasonably coherent story line. And to have the talents of William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Gary Oldman, and Heather Graham all combine into this mess of a movie is absolutely mind-boggling. This movie is constructed of every cliche imaginable. Characters are introduced in completely implausible ways just to have another character to market as an action figure. The movie ends with the possibility of sequels...let's hope those plans are Lost In Space.

Summary: A visual ride through the universe
Review: This movie is nothing but a visual tease, although it looks and is carried out well. "Lost in Space" can be compared to the adventures of Odysseus known from the Greek mythology and even those didn't have much of a plot but are still considered the best piece of literature of that era. At the same time this movie can be compared to Dafoe's Robinson story (another of those books that haven't got much of a story but are considered masterpieces) cause most of it happens in an unknown and uncharted territory, besides the last name of the main characters is Robinson.Matt LeBlanc plays the same way he does as Joey from "Friends", Gary Oldman and Heather Graham are as good as always and even the kids are played well (according to the standards of 'playing well kids'). The most astonishing thing, though, is the work from the visual effects team. All those new worlds, visions of our future, the technical inventions that aren't that far anymore and the little biological thingies from other planets look amazing. All in all this movie is helluva good if you just want to spend some time. In a galaxy far far away...

Review: It's fun for kids and adults! I wasn't even a Lost In Space fan until I saw this. Forget Star Trek. Screw Star Wars. Give me Lost In Space!

Summary: IT Was a good try, but failed...
Review: This was a good try to remake the television series, with great budget, but it sounds a little bit "heartless". Hurt is totally without charisma (contrary to Guy Williamson in the series. THe movie never takes off, but there are certain good and funny moments. It used the old plot of "time-travel" to make the history.

Summary: Very uneven
Review: Let me start by saying that I really hated the lost in space TV show. And I was plesently suprised by the film in many ways. Unfortunatly it still has some rather big problems. I'll start with the good stuff. Aside from the film's excelent visuals, Lost in Space actually has a fairly interesting story(at least near the end). Thankfully they have dspensed with the TV show's campy attitude and the movie is quite a bit more serious. Also Gary Oldman does an excellent job as Dr. Smith. He's smart, nasty, and totally sleazy(everything the origional should have been). But all this can't save the film from it's flaws. William Hurt, who plays the father, is a perfect paralell to this film. Some of the time he acts very well, other times however he is incredibly flat and actually looks like he is stoned. Another problem is that some elements(mainly the robot) have been retained from the old show. The robot is almost exactly the same and realy acts stupid when he decides to "save his friends". Lost is Space is still a good film and worth seeing but it could have been better.

Summary: One of the most under-rated movies of the '90's.
Review: As a dedicated fan of the Lost In Space TV series since my childhood in the 60's I approached New Line's big-screen version with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation on its release in '98. I'd heard about the initial reviews and was ready to be severely let-down. Imagine my surprise to emerge from the cinema feeling as though it was one of the best times I've had at the movies.The amazing effects "blew me away" (leaving me somewhat exhausted by my responses to them)but unlike so many recent sci-fi extravaganzas I found myself entertained by a complex and witty screenplay which also unexpectedly moved me with its restrained use of sentiment.I applaud the efforts of Akiva Goldsman and Stephen Hopkins to recapture the tone of the early black and white episodes of the TV series (before the show descended into camp, never to fully recover)and found the 90's modifications to the concept (eg. dysfunctional family issues etc) intriguing. Fans of the show were given clever references to well-known episodes and lines of dialogue (the first two-thirds of the film stuck very close to the pilot episode and the following one entitled THE DERELICT) and the cameos by original cast-members were great.June Lockhart in particular showed herself to be an actress with a bold sense of humour about her TV image! The film cast couldn't have been better chosen (Gary Oldman is particularly outstanding as the vain, villianous Dr. Smith), all adding the kind of depth we don't see too often in films of this genre.Bruce Broughton's score (the great John Williams was unable to redo his classic TV score due to other commitments) is excellent (see the reviews of the full score CD at Amazon.com) and a worthy successor to its "forbear". Although moved by the ending (involving the saving of John Robinson's life by an older version of his son Will, who in effect sacrifices himself for him) I originally found the last portion of the narrative difficult to grasp and sensed that editing had played a hand in this. The DVD's commentaries and deleted scenes confirmed my theories(the "time bubble" sequence originally had many "bubbles" and dialogue had to be cut when confused preview audiences led the makers to shred this sequence down).Nevertheless, repeated viewings have made even this section more enjoyable and easier to grasp (time warp sequences are usually a bit hard to fully work out at the best of times- eg. BACK TO THE FUTURE II).My only carp is that, despite Jared Harris' good performance, I wish that Bill Mumy (who played Will in the series) had been given the opportunity to portray the older version of Will (he tested for the role and reportedly believed it was his for a time- his disappointment at losing it apparently played a major part in his decision to have no part in the production).Harris (the son of Richard Harris) apparently had his dialogue looped by an American actor.Nonethless, I happily cannot understand the tirade of criticism levelled against this film and believe that time will be kinder to it than many other movies which were well received critically at the same time.One Melbourne critic (Jim Schembri, of The Age, called it "an undeniably entertaining extravaganza based on the modest '60's TV series").It is incomprehensible to me that there were no Oscar nominations forthcoming for Visual Effects, Sound Effects Editing, Dramatic Score and Art Direction-Set Decoration. I have yet to play the (excellently produced) DVD to anyone who has not been entertained and moved by it. A planned sequel is reportedly unlikely to be made now due to box-office figures- a tremendous pity which I hope will be turned around before cast contracts expire etc.. I cannot recommend this film highly enough- even to those who may not be sci-fi buffs.

Review: Hmmm... Ok here's the deal: A super-hyped movie with theatrical trailers starting a year before it hit the theaters; a 70 million dollar task, and a big waste of time. The acting and characters are unbelievable. Matt Le Blanc, who was born for his role as Joey in Friends, is really really awful in this. Neither of the kids are that great. The little boy just kinda looks around until it's time to say something. The special-affects are pretty good. Although some things were a little over-the-edge (e.g., Put the ship into hyperdrive and FLY THROUGH the sun! ) Now to the DVD: The DVD itself is pretty good. Lots of extras, including the actual script, in case you - as many people often do - get the uncontrolled urge to act-out Lost In Space in your home using common household items as props. A music video is also on the disk, a few games. Also a little extra called "Penny's World: READ PENNY'S THOUGHTS ON LIFE AS A TEENAGER IN THE FUTURE." If none of this makes you want to buy the DVD, nothing will... The movie should be Lost In Space.

Review: Got this free with a DVD player promotion. Good thing, because I wouldn't want to pay for it. Excellent special effects, a potentially viable premise, but it falls flat on its face. Poor ending as well. The various DVD features are the only saving grace of this film. Spent more time with those than I did watching the film.

Review: Although I didn't think this movie was going to be any good..I was surprised to find it visually appealing w/ AWESOME sound (5.1) With the addition of all those 'extras', I believe this is a 'must-have' in a beginners DVD collection.

Summary: Great Special Effects!
Review: The special effects for this movie are great. The movie would have been awesome if the story was better. This is an example of the directors trying to make up for story through the use of special effects. Sadly it doesn't happen, and some of the dialogue uttered through the movie had me laughing at times. I gave it three stars because it's a movie good for the whole family to view, but that's it.
