Summary: Mutant Make-Over
Review: With the upcoming sequel just a few months away, Fox re-release the original comic book blockbuster in a surprising 2-disc special edition DVD. Since I've already reviewed the film, let's focus on the real question: How much of an improvement over the previous DVD? Like the previous DVD, the movie is presented in a THX certified widescreen format. The picture quality is the same but it's still a fine transfer with great sharpness and detail. The Dolby Digital sound is great but it's the DTS audio option that's the real winner. Fans who weren't please with the first X-Men DVD, will be impressed with the special features of X-Men 1.5 DVD. It includes behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentaries, trailers and a look of the upcoming X2 (Sorry, no hidden Spider-Man clip or DVD-ROM extras). The animated menus are bright and quite appealing. Overall, there are enough supplemental materials to satisfy diehard X-Men fans. X-Men 1.5 scores an "A-".

Summary: Ah yes, the old "new edition" DVD ploy
Review: Well, here we are yet again with the "new edition" DVD ploy. Back in 2000, Fox released X-Men on a sub-par DVD that had a great menu design but so-so extras. Now with Fox's latest big budget comic property, Daredevil raking in the cash, it seemed like a good time to re-release X-Men on DVD with all the extras that it should have gotten the first time. Even though it is spread out on two discs, the extras themselves really don't add anything worth owning, so if you allready own the older X-Men DVD than there is no reason to rush out and buy this. However, if you don't own the older DVD, then this is a good buy mainly because X-Men is one of the best comic to film adaptions ever. It was a forgone conclusion that Patrick Stewart would be a perfect fit for Professor X, and Hugh Jackman came out of nowhere (he was a virtual unknown before he starred in this) and played Wolverine to perfection. Ian McKellen seems a bit too frail to be the mighty Magneto, and a pre-Oscar winning Halle Berry is actually a bit bad as Storm (although her role in the upcoming X-Men 2 is said to do her more justice). The special effects are great, and director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) knew what he was doing as a director because he himself is a fan of the comic. All in all, the long awaited big screen take of X-Men is five stars in itself, but thanks to the sloppy DVD (and timing of release) this gets a four. Can't wait for X-Men 2.

Review: If you already have the original released DVD of this dont bother getting the special released one because it has very few extra features. The movie is excellent great special effects, story follows true to the comic book so if you already have the original DVD, just keep that one.

Summary: Movie's alright, DVD is somewhat depressing
Review: Yes, special editions are overdone in today's market, but then again, if you'd like to avoid buying them, just sort of look at the movie's box-office returns. If it's big and it's obviously aiming at franchise-ness (like this film), then you can likely bank on a DVD rerelease prior to the sequel, and then if you don't see one, you can pick up the older release carefree. Still, it's not like they're all bad, the Lord of the Rings DVD was certainly worth buying -- unlike this X-Men "Extended Edition" (apparently), LotR actually had 35 minutes more footage on it, and the DVD was definitely worth owning...both of the LotR DVDs were.
Anyway, the X-Men movie was alright. Maybe a little light, but then again, that's the way they come. Also, I've heard they desecrated the X-Men history, but nonetheless I enjoyed it. Not quite as good as 2002's Spider-Man, but still, a fun action ride.

Review: I didnt see this movie in theaters but when it came out on dvd, I bought it as soon as it came out and loved it. I still love it. I thought that it was better then spiderman, daredevil, and any other movie I have seen latly. I cant wait for x2. This time I wont miss out on seeing it in theaters.

Review: Summary:
The movie opens with a bunch of scenes introducing the main characters and their powers. Magneto/Erik Magnus Lehnsherr (Ian McKellen) is separated from his parents during World War II. Dr. Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) is trying to convince the U.S. congress not to force mutants to be registered so they can be monitored. The movie actually begins when Rogue (Anna Paquin) kisses her first boyfriend and nearly kills him by taking his life force. She then runs away and ends up in Alaska where she meets Wolverine/Logan (Hugh Jackman). Sabretooth (Tyler Mane) attempts to abduct them but they are saved by Cyclops/Scott Summers (James Marsden) and Storm/Ororo Munroe (Halle Berry). We are then introduced to the X-Men and their school at Professor Charles Xavier's (Patrick Stewart). The rest of the movie is the X-Men pitted in a battle against Magneto and his henchmen to save the world from Magneto's plan to make the 'normal' humans into mutants. My Comments:
As I said at the beginning, I have always loved superheroes (mutants or not) and for that reason I really enjoyed the movie. Of course, there are some plot holes - why was Rogue headed to Alaska; how did Mystique get into the school; how did the senator get abducted; etc. - but they are not so significant that they detract from the movie. Understandably, I guess, special effects involving the mutants powers are expensive and not easy to pull off, which explains why there are so few and so little confrontation between the mutants. Especially lacking in exhibitions of their powers were Storm and Jean Grey, likely the most difficult powers to replicate in a movie. Overall, the movie was very entertaining and definitely left room for a sequel - a sequel that I will be waiting for. Not perfect, but fun.

Summary: "X-Men" In name only read issues 94-141 for the real "X-men"
Review: X-men the movie is NOTHING like the comic books. While there were changes made for the screen, most of them were for the worst. In the comics the X-men had tight, character driven stories, the screenplay for this movie is juat a bunch of jumbled scenes thrown together. While there are some good casting moves (Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian Mckellen are wonderful in their roles) we rarely get to see ANY OF THE CAST DO ANYTHING EXCEPT pot and spout cliches with the exception of Hugh Jackman who gets way too much screen time. Characters we've all grown to care about-Cyclops(underused), Storm(who has an on again off again African accent), Rogue(too young) and Jean Grey(wooden) have nonexistent roles. The villans are also pretty useless in this movie too. Mystique has no story, sabretooth no personality and toad is just a spit and tongue gimmick. The years of depth and caracter development of the comic characters are sacrificed for the sake of idiotic stunts and special effects. Rent it, don't buy it because this movie was made for diehard fanboys only. If you want to know who the X-men REALLY are check out "Essential X-men" volume I and II on sale in the books section.

Summary: Buying one DVD of this movie was enough....
Review: That's what I don;t like about re-releaseing DVDs of movies that are already available. It;s useually just to have the customers spend more money on a film they already have. Anyway this new DVD of X-Men is pretty lousy. Too many bonus features and so little useful information. I bought the first DVD of X-Men, and it;s fine as is. I'm not wasteing my money on a second disk. No way.

Summary: too late.....but worth the wait
Review: I completely agree that it is a lowdown, dirty trick of the studios to release two or more different DVDs for some movies, delaying the goodies for a later date to sell twice as many. But what are we, the consumers, to do? If we resist buying the movies we love to hold out for the better release, the reduced sales might create the impression that there isn't enough interest in the film, therefore lessening the chances of there even BEING a better release. And speaking for myself, I'm not real big on delayed gratification. Some movies take so long to get to DVD in the first place, to hold out even longer would be unbearable. Let's face it, they have us where they want us. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed the extras on this disc. The commentary was the very best kind, telling humorous (at times hilarious) behind-the-scenes anecdotes of making the film and pointing out small details that I have missed even after numerous viewings. The sneak peek of X2 was thrilling, and the featurettes and interviews were very entertaining. My only complaint has to be that both discs hung up at one point, shutting down the player and necessitating starting all over again (not such a big deal with scene selection on the feature, but the extras disc is not so easily navigated). I would think after waiting so long to release this, minor bugs like that would have been worked out. Can't wait for X2!!
