Rating: Summary: Eye candy meets sheer sci-fi bliss! A must for any film-goer Review: Starship troopers has got to be on of the most engrossing movies that I have ever seen. Paul Verhoeven, one of my favorite foreign-filmmakers-comes-to-America directors, sure does know how to unleash a magnificent sense of style. For history buffs, the style of the movie is very much like the propaganda ads of WWII and in general past society's views on warfare. The acting was wonderfully tongue-in-cheek and 1950ish, and the whole cast (with the execption of Doogie Houser) give a stellar performance. I would not like to live in that kind of neo-fascist society, but it is fun to imagine taking part in it and being exposed to a satirical, comical version of their patriotism and self-righteousness. The people here who have been giving this film negative reviews are obviously taking the film way too seriously. It's not supposed to be taken seriously, it is merely showing us a kind of patriotic society that reflects many other creations of human culture. I think the society in Starship Troopers is fascinating and, considering that it is not real, even fun to root for. I have read the book and I am proud to say that Heinlien would have been proud. The government in that film was misleading the people with lies and misinformation (like saying that the bugs were sending meteors from over half the galaxy as an excuse to wipe out the indigenious race). There were really no good guys in that movie, but you end up rooting for the main characters because they provide a wonderfully distorted example of victims of an opressive government with a silver lining. The viewers can somehow relate to them. For those of you who didn't read the book, the Klendathu were as bad as the humans. They tortured them and studied them, and they even had lasers attached to their bodies. The space sequences were nothing short of inspiring and wonderful. I am a major war movie buff and war gamer and at times a patriot, and I enjoyed this movie. Paul Verhoeven knows what he is doing as a filmmaker (except for Showgirls) and deserves good reviews. He studied every single WWII movie before filming this one.
Rating: Summary: A hardcore action thriller that actually has substance! Review: "Starship Troopers" has great action, graphics, and sound. The effects are the best I've seen so far. The movie touches real issues of society, but in a more futuristic state. It makes you think and most action movies don't give that chance. The movie is probably best for people who like action, thrillers, and gore. As far as the less inteligent parts of people goes. The movie also, has alot of substance though so if you're not into action you can still enjoy the movie. At one point everyone should see this movie.
Rating: Summary: Good FX bad everything else... Review: The graphics were great. But my problem is the tactics that were invloved. The ONE and only scene where the humans use air attack they obliderate the bugs, and the rest of the movie they (humans) use ground attacks and just get killed. Would a real army use no air warfare. I don't think so!!!!!
Rating: Summary: This is the movie that diserved the Visual Effects OSCAR Review: C'mon, I know Titanic was expensive, but the special effects in this movie are state of the art (simply the best I've ever seen). But, since Titanic was more expensive. The special effects aren't the only thing, the screenplay is incredible and the actors are "acceptable". And the actors are well-chosen ones. Michalel Ironside is simply incredible with his army sadistical look, and Casper Van Dien was "a good soldier". I saw this movie four times and I didn't get bored, 'cause the action is unstoppable. It's just shooting and flying, but with style. And the bugs... oh the bugs. I'm sure you wouldn't like to meet a Tanker Bug face to face, hehehe.
Rating: Summary: This was my favorite film of 1997! Review: This film is incredible! How they got a R rating by todays standards is remarkable. excellent blend of sci-fi and gore. This DVD is a must have for owners of this terrific format. The ac-3 sound is equally beautiful.
Rating: Summary: 2 different comment Review: The movie is indeedly NICE and NOT NICE! The nice part are the effects. The Not Nice part is the acting and talking. Although many like the movie, but many don't. The movie is only for those who like BLOODY scene. I'm lucky because I'm half half. The effects are DAMN good, maybe as good as StarWars, but the problem is, the movie is Very, very bloody. Anyway, good try.
Rating: Summary: Good movie, although pretty graphic Review: I thought that this movie was very good. The only exception was that the bug fighting scenes were very graphic, people cut in half, legs getting torn off, etc. I also thought that the co-ed nude shower scene made the film realistic to the fact that it's the military, but was unnecsary.
Rating: Summary: A total hash of Heinlen's book. Review: Based on Robert Heinlen's book, this is an insult to the man who is considered the greatest science fiction author of all time. The characters are unbelievable and the tactics are idiotic. How could these guys actually expect to win a war, anyway? Bottom line, this is the worst filmation of a book I've ever seen, beating even The Lost World Jurrasic Park.
Rating: Summary: Pure garbage! Review: Okay, I'm biased; I'm a huge fan of the book and have been for the past 13 years since I first read it. I knew Hollywood wouldn't be able to get this film right and the celluloid trash that was finally produced only proved it. It could have been so much better...I don't need to make a laundry list of all the problems, especially with the military aspects of the film, the ridiculous physics..it just goes on and on.SFX do not make a movie all by themselves. The second time I saw this film on video and paid attention to it I couldn't believe the horrid dialog, almost anyone could have done a better script. Powered armor, a key concept of the book was absent and I don't buy the producer's excuse of "It would have been too expensive to have 300 suits made" Uh..did you even read the book? A platoon of CAP troopers was only about 10 men. The reason they were trained the way they were is that they had to rely on their buddies who they couldn't even see. They can CG thousands of bugs but no powered armor? And I'm sorry, but anyone who's had any military experience had to laugh at all the grab-assing the characters did in the barracks (which looked more like a clubhouse). Somebody could do a remake, call it 'Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers'. Mix in the terror of films like 'Platoon', the de-humanizing of 'Full Metal Jacket', PAY ATTENTION to the book and the characters in it, and they'd have a great movie. Verhoeven's Starship Troopers should just be blown out the airlock.
Rating: Summary: My Humble Opinion Review: The best Sci-fi - Action movie ever made. Combines the two genres perfectly. My personal favorite.
