Summary: Jeez, I get it ! . . . . .and it's Awful
Review: When my 8 year old son and I saw the previews to this we both thought it looked like a big, fun sci-fi bug hunt. My wife and I saw it first because of it's rating. We could not believe how bad it was on every level except for the excellent special effects. I'm not quite sure why anyone would make a movie whose marketing is obviously targeted directly at kids and then fill it with enough nudity and violence to keep them out. But whether this was social satire or just a comic book extravaganza, it was dreadful. I have coined a phrase "Verhooven syndrom" Whenever a clever idea presents itself... have a gunfight instead. The "satire" in this film was obvious and played out in 5 minutes. I hated all these arrogant, self rightious nazi overachievers. I thought they might break out into "Springtime for Hitler" (Mel Brookes - The Producers) at any moment. And the so called plot couldn't even be bothered to follow it's own internal logic. And worst of all, when it tried to be funny - it wasn't. OK, so bugs send an asteroid from another star system, light years away. It cruises by a starship and still manages to surprise every one in a totally Southern California version of Argentina. Ships capable of light speed surround a planet so close together they can't be missed by bug juice travelling in straight lines. "Whatya mean go down there? Just blow up the stupid planet!" The battle scenes were undermind by the very unbelievability of the whole setup. You can take people way out of reality if you build a logic basis for it and follow that logic but if you start out with the audience thinking "That makes no sense at all" you not going anywhere because nothing matters to begin with. Is it all just a touge in cheek joke? It isn't nearly funny enough to think they were actually trying to be funny. It may be, someday, when it's on Mystery SCience Theatre 3000. but someone else will be supplying the humor. So we've got good special effects, pro-nazi satire. (Not one line or character to counterpoint) Bad characters. Terrible dialoge. Imbecilic science and sophmoric fiction. I can understand why some people love it. I wonder who their favorite wrestler is?

Summary: What a lot of tongue in cheek...
Review: Goodness me, what a lot of serious reviews of an entirely tongue in cheek movie. Anyone having seen RoboCop would realize that Verhoeven's trademark is the ultra-violent, sci-fi romp. I'm not a gore lover in movies, but in Starship Troopers the violence is so outrageous you have to laugh...as you turn your head. Ok so the only resemblence the movie bears to Heinlein's novel, is that they share the same name and some bugs, but this movie is well conceived, well directed, well photgraphed, and if you like special effects...well they're some of the best I've seen

Summary: Texans love Starship Troupers
Review: This is an excellent movie. It had a little bit of everything for both men and women. There was a love story for the ladies and plenty of violence and gore for the guys. Don't forget the shower scene. This is not a movie for the youngsters. If you want to sit back and just enjoy the ride this is the movie for you. And for us guys, it's not one of those movies with a hidden message you need to think about all day. Just enjoy the show.

Summary: One of the top 10 worst movies ever!
Review: This film is virtualy unwatchable... on par with Showgirls. To stupid for adults... and beyond too violent for children. A lot like RoboCop.

Hmmm... Showgirls... RoboCop...same director too.

Stear clear

Summary: Shallow Interpretation of Book
Review: This movie was, at best, a loose interpretation of Heinlein's classic novel. Sure, there were bugs (lots of bugs) but the characters were developed in a rather shallow manner, and the relationships were not investigated deeply. In fact, if the scriptwriters even read the book, I'd be surprised.

Summary: Problematic Motion Picture
Review: This movie is too adult for children, and too juvenile for adults

Summary: Fantastic special effects in service of a moral conundrum
Review: Paul Verhoeven's superviolent action-packed space social satire is a technical wonder. The epic scope of space battles surpasses even the Star Wars movies, making the vastness of space seem almost claustrophobic. Of course the bugs could be nuked from space without sending in the troopers for hand to razor-sharp limb combat. Of course the troopers don't have to use machine guns with bullets to slice them up, either. Of course the Federation ships don't have shields and blow up easily when stupid pilots make errors in judgment. That is the point: it's not about the bugs' foolishness, but ours. The problem with the satire in this movie is the open-endedness of the interpretation: what is the point of putting the "good guys" in Nazi uniforms? Surely we're not supposed to sympathize with the bugs slicing and dicing our photogenic leads? Heinlein was clearly promoting fascist views in his novel, but Verhoeven is faced with a moral conundrum in turning the book into a satire: some people are bound to take him seriously.

Summary: Plan 9 was better!
Review: This is about as bad a movie as I have ever seen, there are some who say we are missing the point, that this is supposed to be satirical, but it is hard to get to the point with such a horrid plot and acting. The effects are unbelievably excellent, but cannot salvage this movie. If you like very bad, campy movies, check out "Plan 9 form outer space" at least the acting was better.

Summary: Double Sided!
Review: We are about to enter the 21st century and I still have to get up in the middle of my film to flip the disk! This ruins the whole concept of the 'cinema' experience...Otherwise a really great movie.
