Rating: Summary: Classic book, not so classic movie. Review: To attempt to reproduce one of the finest sci-fi novels ever written into movie format is a daunting task, to say the least, especially a novel that is as deep as Herbert's masterpiece, "Dune". I found the casting to be first-rate, the costumes original, and the attempt to stay true to the novel admirable. However, classic novels don't always translate into classic movies. While the novel is mysterious and dark, the movie came off as seedy. As mentioned by other reviewers, it's obvious that the production values suffered during the shooting of this film. The special effects went from very good to cheesy at best. Throughout the book the reader is placed inside the head of the cast of characters, allowing the reader to pick up their thoughts. When this is done in the movie, it came off sounding contrived and amateurish. For those attempting to understand the film who haven't read the novel, the movie must have seemed like a jumbled mess. To be fair, this movie did many things well, but the editing was too heavy-handed, and left too many gaping holes. The expanded version (one of many different versions, I understand), helped only somewhat in clarifying the multiple layers of plot exposed in the novel. Although a worthwhile effort, the film version of "Dune" lacks in too many areas to give it a positive review. Between 1 and 10, "Dune" (depending upon the version one sees) gets a very marginal 6.

Rating: Summary: This movie is intense, absorbing, and fascinating Review: I really enjoy this movie. I first watched it years ago and still do. However, it is an intense, complicated, and unusual film that you must pay attention to. It is not easily digestable entertainment. I would suggest watching it a few times to get more benefit. Although, I am VERY disappointed the extended version is not available. By editing the movie, its as though only half the film has been released leaving gaps and confusion for the viewer. Please, please, please release the full version!!!!!
Rating: Summary: good movie, but the 4 hour version needs to be released!!!!! Review: I Don't have much to say other than the movie company ruined this movie by not letting Lynch release the 4 hour version it was a movie where you needed needed the 4 hour version and wanted the 4 hour version.. My advice is don't rate this movie until you see the Full version....
Rating: Summary: Good Movie...Bad Transfer. Review: Still enjoyed the movie after all these years. But the transfer to DVD was poor. Color saturation and sound were both lacking. I found only marginal inprovement from VHS. Even "Walkabout" had a better transfer. We really need a technical review section.
Rating: Summary: fine example of science fiction Review: Dune is one of the best science fiction movies in a long time. The acting was great but the movie had some obvious problems with editing. David Lynch originally planned for the movie to be four hours long, but Universal Studios feared no one would watch it if it were too long. Well, the movie was clocked at around 2 hours 17 minutes, felt too short, and it earned less than 1/10 of the money Empire Strikes Back made. Also, nearly all of Virginia Madsen's scenes seemed to have been left in the editing room. The special effects were second rate compared with Star Wars or even the recent X-Files movie. But the movie had a good plot that is actually pretty easy to understand if you just pay attention in the beginning. I loved the musical score, especially during the end credits.
