Summary: Yawn.
Review: Everyone says Dune is VISUALLY IMPRESSIVE, but it isn't! The film quality, the silly costumes, the special effects and the sets all make it look like it was made in the 1940s...never mind 1984. I'm sure the characters' constant inner monologues worked in the book, but they just look stupid on film. The plot is confusing. Heck, the only aspect that impressed me were the giant worms, but even they were too slow to stun audiences. It's difficult to keep a straight face when watching it, because there are many characters who have laughably fake hair and moustaches. On the whole, silly, overlong and drab. Even though I haven't read the book, I'm sure it's better than this. I mean this was made AFTER Star Wars, you'd expect it to look reasonably good!

Summary: This movie is not for the weak minded or the unimaginative!
Review: Arguably the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen. The complexity of the story Frank Herbert wrote is incredible and the richness of the images Davia Lynch provides makes this film an all time classic. It's unfortunate that Universal Studios didn't think the public could handle a movie longer than 2.5 hours otherwise David Lynch could have realized his vivsion more completely with this movie. As is, it requires the audience to pay attention because he has to pack so much information into such a small time frame. With the restrictions placed on the film by Universal I think Lynch did an excellent job of taking you to the Dune universe. Some people like Leonard Maltin may have trouble understanding this movie, but then sci-fi isn't for everyone. It takes brains and imagination to willingly emerse yourself in another world with new realities. Having read the book after seeing the Movie and then seeing it several more times I can say that Lynch does cover the critical information needed to follow the storyline, but you have to pay attention.

Summary: Appealing only to fans of the book
Review: When I first saw Dune I looked at a movie only fans of the book could love.Although it's visually impressive the plot line is too long to try to figure out.

Summary: It does take someone capable of imagination....
Review: Dune is a visually impressive movie. Although you may need to see it several times to catch all the dialog due to the director needing to compress it into a certain amount of time. It is a movie that envelopes political intrigue, romance and adventure. It definely requires imagination, which I am sure many critics don't have! If you like Science fiction, you should enjoy this movie.

Summary: Dune is the perfect definition of sci-fiction!!
Review: I read most of the reviews. I understand that the film is not perfect, that the book is much better and that the screenplay seens a lot confusing. However if you really like science fiction you should admire it like something really unusual. Lynch takes us to an amazing new universe. Have you ever seen something like Dune before? I have not! I still think that in many aspects this film is beyond its time, like 2001 Space Odissey (Ok this one is the perfect masterpiece of all time, maybe i should mention Solaris as well). The screenplay is difficult, but thanks to that it allowed me to watch it many times, and i still get amazed about the story and all the brilliant art involving this complex film. Just to mention "the great names" Max Von Sydon, Silvana Mangano, Dean Stockwell and Linda Hunt are brilliant, even Kyle is nice (but Sting i have to admit that his is not convincing as a bad guy). Maybe the end could be better, but Sting again is not playing well ("I am not here, I did not say this"). The soundtrack is perfect for a science fiction. I wish that David Lynch could be allowed to do his director`s cut. I would like to thank Frank Herbert, Lynch, Rambaldi, Dino de Laurentis and all the actors and actress for this outstanding tour the force. When i watch Dune I can travel/dream without moving/sleeping! That`s all about cinema isn`t it? " Father, father...the sleeper has awaken".

Summary: damn fine movie, although misunderstood
Review: Seen the movie, superb. Unfortunatly i have only seen the cinema film and not the TV version so realise that chunks from (excellent) book missing. If this film had decent effects and been allowed a longer showing from the offset i believe it would be regarded as one of the finest s/f movies yet.

Summary: Not cut for DVD
Review: In response to Patrick Walker's comment on how it was cut to fit on DVD. However, that is not the reason. The DVD shows the two hour original cut, not the four hour director's cut you may have seen on TV. The Truth is that evil execs did not want to release the Director's cut on home video.

Summary: This is a great movie.
Review: Frank Herbert loved David Lynch's visual interpretation of his book. Too bad people don't realize that the mediums (Film and literature)are so different. It's also too bad that there wasn't a second movie made, as this classic deserves it better than most (Die Hard 3?????). Lynch joins Kubrick among a short list of GREAT directors that make movies that most of the American public doesn't seem to be intelligent enough to understand.

Summary: A good movie
Review: I think this is a good movie. You might have to watch it twice before you understand it. The story has been compressed very tightly, transitions are short, characters develop suddenly, and nearly every line of dialogue is essential. This doesn't prevent it from being an enjoyable movie; it just requires the viewer to pay close attention.
