Rating: Summary: How do I erase my memory? Review: Contains utterly ugly disturbing violence. When it was over I wanted to cleanse the memory from my mind.
Rating: Summary: Dune: the sleeper has awaken. Review: David Lynch's (Eraserhead, Twin Peaks) adaptation of Frank Herbert's defining saga 'DUNE' may very well be, if truth be told, the most epic enterprise, and in many ways the most rewarding, of Lynch's work thus far.Dune is a difficult movie to review, if only because there is no easy (or maybe I should say simple) way to look at it. At its core though DUNE tells the story of Paul Atreides, a young man whose destiny as a Messiah of worlds echoes that of such classics like Brazil or Spartacus, where seemingly ordinary men become extraordinary beings. This however is an over-simplification, DUNE is built from a collection of stories and legends that form a unique whole -perfectly captured by Lynch. Make no mistake, this movies begs to be seen in its original 2,35:1 widescreen format. Freddie Francis' photography of the barren Dune world is simply amazing, and even though some of the special effects may seem old when compared to today's standards, the amazing designs by Anthony Masters will simply take your breath away. The DVD edition, while not anamorphic, is very well presented, sporting a very high quality video transfer and excellent sound. A brief, if yet interesting, collection of production notes are also included, as well as cast and crew bios and the original theatrical trailer in widescreen format. DUNE seems slow at times and it may not be for everyone -but then that's always been the trademark of Lynch's work, I think. Still, DUNE is an excellent example of how a complex story can make a Sci-Fi movie be truly epic. Couple that with the amazing designs and the beautiful photography and you got a winner here. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Dune Review: Dune is an awsome saga put to video. Not much deviation from the novel saga. Very well directed as well as casted. You will notice some familar faces. You will enjoy this movie if you are any kind of a sci fi fan.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Style, Wonderful Movie (Go Sting! ) Review: This Movei Really Grabbed me, especially after I had read the book, I was impressed at how close to the book the movie stayed, not perfect, but it wasn't mutilated as so many books are. I have been told that there is a 4 hour long version that fills in the hole where "Paul and Chani's love grew". Is this true? If you know anything about it, please E-mail me. And if you haven't read the book yet, do. Now.
Rating: Summary: A Brilliant Display of the Novel Review: Taking into account the scope of the book, and the fact that it would probably take six hours to make a movie that does the book justice, I have to say that de Laurentis did a marvelous job! This film provides a visual representation of the marvel that is DUNE, given the constraints of time that are placed on film. The storyline is strong, the emotion stirring, and it leaves one remembering the entire movie: not just the exciting bits and pieces... A definate MUST SEE!
Rating: Summary: Great if you've read the book Review: Stunning visuals, good acting, and crazy battle scenes. I loved it, but I can see how someone who hasn't previously read the book can be extremely confused. The only bad part of the movie, I thought, was the goofy and gruesome Harkonnens. The Baron was a little too much. All in all great flick. If your not a harcore sci-fi fan it may be too weird for you.
Rating: Summary: Genre fans only Review: Good special effects and a mouth dropping production design can't overcome a rather vague and oppressive plotline. The idea of being able to hear what the characters are thinking wasn't very bright.
Rating: Summary: Good movie but as they say the book is better. Review: I've seen this movie dozens of times. I like it. But I must say that it defines the phrase "The book is better" which is why I rate it four stars instead of five. In the films favor: good acting, very dramatic, and unbelevable special fx. Even by todays standards. My recomendation to anyone who wants to see this movie or has seen it and couldn't make heads-or-tails-of-it is to read the book first. If you have seen the movie and not read the book then read it. It gives you a lot more background information. For example:In the book you are told exactly "why" the Atreides and the Harkonnens want to see each other dead. I own the movie and the entire six book series so I think you can trust what I say.
Rating: Summary: Dune Injured By Bad Film Review: The book Dune by Frank Herbert was incredible, but this film was poorly made and hard to follow. I didn't understand any of it until I watched it a second time. Once you do understand it, however, it is pretty good. Patrick Stewart is awesome!
Rating: Summary: this is my reference for other sci-fi`s Review: Who said it`s all about special effects in sf movies?I think this is a good example with a story to go for I watched it again and again always discover more about the movie. I placed it right beside the star trek collection on the shelf.
