Summary: Incredibly well done movie
Review: I'll start by saying that I've actually seen the movie 8 times in the theater. I've watched it twice at home (rental)....and I must say that the home version doesn't stack up as well, due to lighting---It just doesn't look/play out the same way at home on a television. It is an absolute must to see this movie in a theater near you if it's still showing (it was still showing in Montreal a few weeks ago--in September). I'm hoping that when I buy the letterbox version &/or the DVD version, I'm more impressed with the way it looks and feels. The Matrix is a very well done movie. Writing and cinematography are beautiful, as is the story. I didn't feel like someone had wasted two hours and change of my life.The only qualm I have with it is when Trinity brings Neo back to life at the end with a kiss. Kinda hokey, if you know what I mean (But that's the ONLY part I disliked). And the soundtrack is really good too. Rob D, Marilyn Manson, Propellerheads....Rage Against the Machine.I know that there's probably a few people who didn't enjoy this movie, but I can't help but recommend it to people when they're looking for a rental.I hope that the Matrix 2 and the Matrix 3 are done well too and that the success of the original doesn't let the Wachowskis (and the studio) think they've got a license to print and take in cash. Unfortunately, they'll be paying the actors quite a bit more money to star in parts 2 & 3....so we'll have to wait and see how well done the next two movies are done.

Summary: A Sci-Fi Thriller of the highest caliber
Review: I'm a fan of all types of movies, and coming up with a top 10 list is a challenge for anyone... but #1 is a no-brainer: The Matrix. This movie is full of eye candy, drama, action, great acting, comedy, and thrills. It's a non-stop rollercoaster that you'll want to watch over and over. The DVD has some great features that you can watch directly from the special features menu, or indivudually as they appear during the movie. The featurette on how they filmed the sweeping 360 degree slow motion scenes is fascinating.I don't buy many movies, as I don't typically like to watch the same film more than once or twice. This film in a rare exception, and it is the type of movie that you can pop in the DVD player and lose yourself in the story while running for 30 minutes on the treadmill. The only problem is pulling yourself away from the action to get back to your normal life. If you are a fan of Star Wars, Stargate, Lord of the Rings, Spiderman, or any modern sci fi action movie, you need to add The Matrix to your permanent collection. You'll love it.

Review: I'm a female adult. I've seen the movie three times and have purchased the DVD. Needless to say, I love it. "Speed" was my number 1 film with Keanu, but now it's been bumped to number 2. "Matrix" is groundbreaking in film making and we will see more films using this type of technique -- I welcome that. Loved all the acting -- writing -- etc. The only thing wrong with "Matrix" is -- I WANT MORE. :)

Summary: Best Effects & Storyline
Review: I'm a sci-fi fan myself, I've seen other movies like The Terminator, Armageddon, and even Deep Impact. They were good at their time but now its The Matrix's time to shine. Special Effects are common in movies but in this movie they make you go wow. One example of this would be when the visual fight between Neo and one of the Agents. If you know what I mean then you to know that it was cool as well.

Summary: Everything old is old AGAIN . . .
Review: I'm being kind. Its really 1 1/2 stars. The Bros. Wachowski's "Bound" proved that they can make a tired heap-o'-clichés seem fresh. Sadly, the only thing new here is some overexposed technology. (FX range from excellent to - mostly - pedestrian.) "The Matrix" is so state of the art that it's dated by the time the credits roll. The script should have been left in the mothballs, though. Given all the hype, the last thing I expected to be was bored silly. A major problem is Reeves. Some good actors in the supporting cast have the thankless burden of carrying the movie without upstaging the lead - whose appeal I've never been able to locate. Is it floating around in that blank void which seems to sit behind his perpetually glazed stare? Is it in his Novocain-thickened line delivery through a mouth so slack it seems forever on the verge of bringing forth a thread of drool, but never quite does? Reeves always appears to have learned his (English) dialogue phonetically. (The single inspired thing in Bertolucci's insufferable "Little Buddha†was it's use of Reeves' brain-damaged chic - vacancy comically passing for enlightenment.) This could be a clue to the casting. After all, the character is a MESSIAH (ho hum, another one of those - wonder how it ends) - a role traditionally requiring no actual character development, just destiny fulfillment. It's a compound miscalculation. Reeves stinks up the screen in a part that was ill-conceived to begin with. Still, who could have saved this godawful mishmash of references to better, works? Even fifteen years ago the Leone gunfight quote wouldn't have passed for cleverness in a TV commercial. Like George (ruined-the-movies) Lucas, the Wachowskis have also pillaged Joseph Campbell. References to "Alice in Wonderland" and John Woo make you long for the real thing. And just TRY not to groan when the hero is (swear to god) resurrected by a kiss. (No spoiler here. Typically, the film is leached of all suspense by our foregone certainty regarding who will and won't die.) Claims to a subversive subtext and deep social criticism are highly dubious, coming from a monster-budget Hollywood blockbuster modeled on video games. It's all too easy for the audience to think that those encapsulated human vegetables, high on virtual life, don't represent themselves - spaced on, say, this movie. (Check out some of the other reviews here for some primo laff-riot examples of how something essentially very shallow can invite enthusiasts to read way too much into it.) There are occasional grace-notes, however. The best thing in the film is the sound of bullet shells hitting the floor during the lobby shootout. After so much bad use of modern sound technology in action and sci-fi movies (see "Titanic" for really hack sound design), the attention to detail here (faithfully reproduced on the DVD) is a real (momentary) pleasure.

Summary: I didn't want to watch this movie, but ....
Review: I'm not (normally!) a fan of action movies -- I can do without the shooting and that sort of thing. So I was *not* amused when my husband popped The Matrix into our VCR. I started to get up and go into the other room, but instead I got pulled right into the movie and couldn't stop watching it! I do enjoy sci fi movies (Star Trek, etc.), but I thought this movie would be a little wild for my tastes. Boy, was I ever wrong! I enjoyed the whole thing, beginning to end. I like that, even though the individual concepts were not new, they were put together in a whole new way and made into a movie that leaves you wondering, even several days later! Of course, after I complained so much when my husband "made" me watch it, there's no way I can admit to him that The Matrix has an *excellent* chance of being one of my all-time favorite movies! he he This movie is on my "Must See" list for any sci fi fan.

Summary: Cerebral and fast-paced.
Review: I'm not a big fan of The Matrix, but I can still respect it. I saw it for the first time when it was playing in the theaters a while back. After it had ended, I had known that it was pretty good, but I still felt like I had missed something. After just seeing it a second time on DVD, I can say that I understand it a lot better. I'm more of a fan of the first half than the second half of the movie though because the first half was more involving and thought-provoking in my opinion. The acting by all is good and the special effects are excellent. The Matrix is not a classic, but it no doubt is still quite cool. Worth a watch.

Summary: A Thinking Person's Sc-Fi Movie
Review: I'm not a big sci-fi fan, and I always thought that other sci-fi cult classics like "Stargate" and "Blade Runner" were highly overrated. But having seen this motion picture, I have to say I'm very impressed. If you're into technical and special effects, they just don't get any better than they do in "The Matrix". No question as to why this motion picture won as many technical Oscars as it did...eat your heart out, Lucas and Spielberg! The reason I refer to this movie as a "thinking person's sci-fi movie" is that some will have a tough time following the plot. This is a picture to which you MUST pay attention to understand. I would have given this movie five stars instead of four, but I thought that Keanu Reeves' acting performance was a little more wooden than usual. Laurence Fishburn, on the other hand, has never been better. I also thought Joe Pantoliano was a questionable casting decision as the turncoat, but it didn't distract all that much from my enjoyment of this motion picture. "The Matrix" is one of those pictures that sort of raises the bar for others of its genre. I understand a sequel is in the works, and I believe I won't wait for it to come out on home video this time.

Review: I'm not a big sci-fi freak, so I was reluctant to get this. After positive word-of-mouth, I purchased the dvd. I LOVE IT!!! Keanu Reeves is great, Carrie Anne Moss is great, Laurence Fishburne is excellent! The fighting scenes are superb, crazy "running on the walls" usually seen in karate action movies. The plot was totally unique, like nothing I've ever seen before. The dvd has a lot of cool extras, like commentary by Carrie-Anne Moss and the directors.
