Rating: Summary: For Once - REAL SCIENCE FICTION! Review: This movie established the benchmark of what science fiction should be. The irony is this: the movie that made me a SciFi fan also spoiled me, for nothing I have seen or read since even comes close. Unfortunately for the genre, what passes for SciFi today is mainly "cowboys in space".If I were to do a remake, I would be hard pressed to outdo the production values. I would, however, eliminate the trite Earl Holliman (as a cook named . . . Cookie) skit with Robby Robot. In fact, it made me deduct one star and give Forbidden Planet a mere * * * * * . Forbidden Planet remains the best SciFi film ever made, and one of the greatest of all films. Even Pauline Kael liked it!
Rating: Summary: forbiddon planet Review: I was ten years old when this film came out and i loved it then and still love it now...Along with the day the earth stood still..This film was ahead of its time..With the robot and the special effect...
Rating: Summary: Simply the BEST Review: I was 9 years old when Forbidden Planet was released. Of course I went to see it for the monster, the story line was secondary to me. Just as well since I didn't understand it anyway. It is much to deep a concept for most 9 year olds. Many many years passed and finally I saw it again. By then I was old enough to understand what the story was. I have since watched it so many times I can practically recite the whole script verbatium, and with the proper voice inflections also. And I still look forward to watching it countless more times...simpley the best science-fiction movie ever made
Rating: Summary: Poor Transfer for a Great Movie Review: I loved this movie on laserdisc but folks this DVD has poor color quality and a terrible video transfer. I would not purchase it until Criterion or somebody does a special edition.
Rating: Summary: One of the best Sci-Fi from its time period Review: 1956 was a time of the Red menace; the Iron Curtain. This is a great rendition of our fear of the unknown. Having seen this movie at the theater at the age of nine, let me tell you it was scary! The invisible monster walking up the stairs to the spaceship and then tearing up the crew was terrifying. Forty some years later I can still remember the terror of the movie. I think the rating for horror should be uprgraded to PG for the dismemberments and assorted killing. Don't get me wrong-I like a good horror movie, any in the "Alien" series is ia great horror flick. I'm just saying that this film is too intense for a seven year old without some coaching as to the violence that will occur. Uncle Lar
Rating: Summary: Forbidden Planet: The all-time best sci-fi movie? Review: While typing away on my computer and watching one of the cable premium channels the other day, I came upon the Sci-fi classic, Forbidden Planet. This was the first time I'd seen it from beginning to end. I was amazed at the great special effects, acting and overall storyline of this movie. I must have this for my private collection. This movie holds up as well today as it did more than 40 years ago. I highly recommend this classic to any sci-fi buff.
Rating: Summary: Excellent and timeless 50's sci-fi Review: When talking obout the best sci-fi movies, Forbidden Planet must surely get a look in. Although the sets and special effects have clearly dated, (though the underground city of the Krell still looks good), the concepts and ideas are as fresh today as the were back then. Although some of the acting is rather creaky, the plot is always fascinating and often exciting with an erie electronic score to add to the effect of a brilliant re-working of a classic Shakespearen play. And who could forget Robby the Robot?
Rating: Summary: The best science fiction film yet made. Review: In my opinon, Forbidden Planet is the best and most accomplished science fiction film yet made. A modern rework would probably ruin suspense and menacing subtlies with overtly grotesque expositions. For example, The Monster From The ID cannot possibly be topped as the "invincible" Luciferic power that remains a temptation to all created beings no matter how benevolent or wise. The fate of the Krell "super" race and Morbius himself presents a parable of mythical power. Biblical resonance in the Temptation of the Forbidden Fruit and The "Knowledge" source of the Forbidden Planet are striking and frightening. The scene where Altaira looses her "innocence" to Commander ADAMS explcitly portrays a Fall from Grace that makes the planet's "Eve" no longer able to be an Edenic child. Imagine how her father, Dr. Morbius' rage would be shown in a remake? Don't...most directors cannot walk the line between the thought-provokingly terrifying and the grotesque. This film is a great piece of film-making. Its ideas are both challenging and profound. Forbidden Planet does what the best in film and literature tries to do. See it.
Rating: Summary: An absolute must! Review: Haven't you seen this movie yet? Go out, buy it, rent it, watch it! Period. Rewind. Watch it again! Now you understand. -Boris
Rating: Summary: Best 50's scf-fi picture! Review: My 13 year old son, who's a sci-fi fan, loved this movie as much as me. (I was born in the 50's.) This movie has one of the scarriest monsters in my opinion! The eriee music and well detailed backgrounds, make it the (slow) Star Wars of the 1950's! I was always fascinated at Robby the Robot's talents! My 13 year old had to watch it several times before understanding the more intellectual ending. It was interesting to see Neilson in a serious role.
