Summary: I thought it was an o.k movie if your really in to sifi.
Review: I personally thought it was hard get into it because of the whole moving through bits and pieces to a new gallaxey, but if your into sifi it's a must see. -Alex-

Summary: Great movie but an early DVD transfer
Review: The sound on this DVD seems not as good as others I have in my collection. I found the picture quality OK and obviously the story is superb. Having to turn the disk over is a real pain. The original movie was in DTS so I'm hoping a DTS DVD will appear where they can rectify the sound.

Summary: THIS MOVIE IS GREAT
Review: This movie is a great find and if you loved the original version you will love the special edition.

Summary: Poor formatting, flipping the disk mid-movie is annoying.
Review: The first hour of this movie is on side A of the disk, the second hour is on side B. This is highly annoying, especially considering that other DVDs hold up to 4 hours of video on one side. Even though the insert lists 30 "scenes", you can only "jump" to 10 of them. The movie is good, and the special effects excellent, but I returned the DVD because it is so poorly formatted.

Summary: A great "what if?" postulation of human "genesis"
Review: For a movie that gets one thinking about "where did we come from", this one does a good job. From the opening theme music to the final closing, this movie keeps one engaged.

James Spader's portrayal of the "geeky nerd" is excellent. I can't imagine anyone else doing that role.

Kurt Russell "overdid" things in his role. While he did a good job as a burned-out Air Force Colonel "in mourning", I think he could've "toned down" things a bit. I also think the overt "anti-gun" theme in his role was a bit much, similar to the overt "anti-smoking" theme in the observatory crash scene in "Deep Impact". Quite frankly, I tire of todays movies being propaganda machines for "Political Correctness" and similar drivel.

The effects are top-notch, especially the "Stargate travel" scenes. Coupled with a very loud soundtrack (not irritating, mind you - just slightly "overdone") gives my Home Theater system a good workout.

All in all, this is a great "Saturday Afternoon Movie-fest" entry.

I have BOTH the Laserdisc and DVD of this movie (I received the DVD as a Christmas present) and I have to say the DVD "has the edge" in picture clarity AND soundtrack quality. There are "things you don't hear" with the Laserdisc soundtrack that you hear on the DVD soundtrack, specifically in the area of "background noise". Otherwise, if you already have the Laserdisc, you don't have to run out and get the DVD.

Finally, the DVD I have is a "flip-disc". I understand this was one of the FIRST DVDs to be released. However, I'm dismayed I have to flip it like the Laserdisc. Oh well, one can't "always have everything", right?

Summary: Great scenario, too quickly resolved...
Review: i REALY loved that movie, the scenario is great, the discovery a new powerful race who once treatened our planet, and now is enslaving people from other planets. It had all the potential to be one of the best movie of the 90's until the end... What should have been a super conflict, of many genrations, was too quickly solved by a bomb..

Summary: What about the Special Edition on DVD
Review: I've heard many disapointing opinions of the DVD transfer from the original (you really have to turn the disc over, ugh!) and for that reason and one other, I won't' buy the DVD. But what about the Special Edition with the extra scenes? It's available on VHS. Anyone know if there are plans to transfer this verison to DVD and get it right this time?

Summary: Highly recommended.
Review: Right up there with the good Star Trek Voyager episodes, Stargate packs a creative storyline with some wonderful special effects. If you don't have Dolby Surround Sound, or better yet, Digital DTS Surround with 5/6-channel output, get it! Films like Stargate, whose sound is as great as the film itself must be heard and seen with quality equipment to enjoy all its offerings.

Summary: Incredible special effects and new footage adds excitement!
Review: The new "Stargate" certainly is incredible. Even though some of the edited scenes are questionable as to why they were removed, they make the movie better. The beginning is totally altered, revealing the truth behind the stargate. Also it is only available in the widescreen format...that's a definite plus!!!

Summary: What a way to ruin a good movie.
Review: From an artistic standpoint..... Stargate is a fine movie. To bad we had to flip the DVD over in mid-movie. My laser disk player could have done that for me. Quite a disappointment in DVD format. How 'bout a re-release on one side?
