Rating: Summary: The irony is, the game is scarier! Review: Resident Evil is granted, not a complete failure like many video game based movies. Anyone who knows even a little bit abou films knows that movies based on video games tend to be terrible. Luckily i don't have much personal experience of this. First, you have to remember when slotting 'resident evil' into the machine not to expect citizen kane. You must judge it on its own standards and that is why it gets the two stars from me - it is better than a lot of its contempories. I'll start with the pro points. It has a lot of action - and some of it isn't too shabby. There is heavy use of nowadays infamous CGI effects and in most cases they are not too bad. Milla Jovovich fills in her role quite well i feel and is a rare example of competent acting in the movie. If you like guns going off regularly they you will be truly entertained. The score isn't my thing but it fits the movie like a glove. Overall it fulfills requirements on some counts. It is more action packed than the game. In fact, if you take resident evil to be an action movie rather than horror you could be pleased. But there are unfortunately many con points to drag down the score. The biggest is my review title - it simply isn't at all scary. There are one or two minor jumps but the atmosphere lacks any kind of suspense, mostly due to torrid acting. But hey! That's OK surely, after all a movie like this doesn't need to generate suspense! It's all about the gore, right? Well, the zombies here are far too slick and clean looking to create any terror. They don't have that scary, low budget zombie feel about them and they disappoint. They have to look 'juicy' but they look too conmputerised. The same goes for all the creature effects. The only really cool effect was the laser and that was borrowed from another movie. Another point is the acting. Well, i won't bother. Pity because the marine at the start who is in 007 movies can be quite competant. The story is pretty threadbare too, as it is being based on a video game. But where the film suffers most is when you compare it to the game. True, the film took out some of the more ridiculous aspects of the game and this was good, but they decided to transfer action to an underground facility rather than the spooky old house of the game, and as a result the creepy value is lost. The game also concentrated on suspense, and when the violence came it was scary, whereas here it is muted by comparision and suspense lacks. The game is the far more thrilling of the two. Overall it could have been pretty good and was wasted i thought, but it wasn't a total cop out, just easily forgettable and lacking genuine thrills. 2/5*.
Rating: Summary: Ride the Umbrella Train to Resident Evil. Review: Everyone enjoys the "Resident Evil" video game series. personally, I play on a Playstation One (PS One). I have just finished all five different variations of "Resident Evil: Dircetor's Cut (Dual Shock), so now I am ready to see this film I have been anxious to see. First of all, this plot does not resemble the same story as the first video game, but I did enjoy this movie. It is based on the same principal. The train is from the "Resident Evil 2" video game. The nice surprise is for all you "James Bond 007" fans is Colin Salmon is in this film as well as he was in TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997), THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999) and DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002). The cast also includes: Heike Makatsch, Jaymes Butler, Milla Jovovich, Eric Mabius, Martin Crewes, Pasquale Aleard, Michelle Rodriguez and James Purefoy. Screen Gems (remember them from television in the 1970's?) presented this film which is now part of the Sony Pictures Entertainment company. The audio commentary is really cool to turn on the second time you watch this film. The "Resident Evil 2" video game is discussed. Filmed in Berlin, Germany and Toronto, Canada, plays like a film the SCI-FI cable network would broadcast. The sequel, RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE will be released September 10, 2004.
Rating: Summary: Zombie film of the year. Review: Well, it was the only zombie film of 2002 but who cares? Okay, in a lab, a group of scientest are studying to do, well I forget. Anyway they fail, bcause in the middle of the process they drop there project and it turns them into the living dead a.k.a. zombies. A govrment group was sent to destroy the scienst, but when they get there all the scientest are all ready zombies. Cool plot huh? The main actress Milla Jovovich is really good( cute to). The film is never really slow and is entertaiting. Brought zombie film back to life, you can tell with 2003 Undead and 2004 Dawn of the Dead. Can't wait for the sequel.(P.S. If you want to get house of the dead because you liked this and it sounds sort of like this, don't)
Rating: Summary: The " Aliens" of the 2lst Century Review: This movie starts out with a bang and never lets go. I wasn't so nervewracked since I watched "Aliens" (2) and made sure all the doors were locked before bed. The cast is as good as "Aliens" also. Milla Jovovich is even better than she was in the "kooky" Fifth Element. There is one thrill after the other. I found myself watching it over. Very good suspense and a few gory parts but nothing I couldn't handle.
Rating: Summary: Way Better Than Expected Review: I've known of the game, never really played it but I really enjoyed the movie. If you've never played the game, don't worry, everything is all there for you to catch up. I found the movie had a lot of story, the action and suspense of the whole film really carries it through. The acting isn't anything oscar worthy but still good. I really got caught up in the whole film and surprise that such a good storyline could come from a video game. I'm sorry i missed out on this when it was in theaters but luckily caught the dvd. I will definately be watching RE2 when it comes out later this year.
Rating: Summary: Just Utterly Amazing Review: This movie is just utterly amazing! I LOVED it! I rate it 6 stars! This is a sexy horror film. Hot chicks that kick ass! This is kinda based on the game but only the T-virus and zombies part. I prefer you don't play the game before watching it becuase a lot of people who played the game then watched the movie were dissappointed. I usually don't watch or like any horror movies but this is definately an exception. Its scary but not too scary. There were some sad parts which I liked. Overall this is a great movie.
Rating: Summary: Doesnt Deliver Review: I was looking forward to getting the chance to watch this movie, after the success of the Resident Evil Video game. But unfortunately, this movie is nothing like the game. The characters arent the same, and the actual story is different. Sure, it is good to have a different story, you dont want to copy everything from the game, but i think the overall idea of the movie, should be based around the game, because thats what everyone is familiar with. But no, it is completely different, and thats its biggest downfall. The characters of the movie arent properly introduced. There is no background to them, so you dont care if they live or die. It seems that they were more focussed on getting to the gore instead of building up the movie. The zombies were my biggest problem. They didnt look scary at all. Half of them didnt even look dead. Looked more human then some of the people i see around in the streets these days. Overall a missed opportunity. I give the movie 1 star because Milla Jovovich has a nice body :P
Rating: Summary: I liked it Review: I have never played the games, nor do I know much of the story behind it. Perhaps that is good, because I won't like many reviewers be lamenting that it differs from it. Although to be honest, even if I did know the games I doubt I would care. I realise that movie versions of books and games differ, and as long as the story is good that's all that matters. I enjoyed this film, it wasn't a 'hide behind the sofa' film, but then these days, what is. We start with a bunch of people in an office slash science lab being killed. We do not know why but this grips us. We then cut to Milla Jovovich lying naked (covered by a shower curtain) in a bathroom. She doesn't seem to know where she is and gets flashes of memory. The action kicks off from there with SWAT like operatives storming the place along with a man who says he is local police. The action keeps on giving from there. People die in a myriad of ways, and you don't get a zombie here or there you get them BOOM all at once. I'm not sure if this is good or bad. One the one hand it makes the task of escaping (which they must do in an allotted time or be trapped forever) all the more impossible. On the other it's not a big shock when we see them all again, and again. The big creature wasn't scary, or rather, it was if we believed it to be real but I didn't. The dogs were scarier in that sense because they are more believable. I liked that the film had strong female characters. Now, I am no feminist but frankly, I'm sick of whiny, girls who want the man to rescue them. From the beginning, I knew Alice would kick booty, I mean the woman wears a pretty little dress, with combat boots. Michelle Rodrigez is a tougher chick but she also shows she has feelings and therefore doesn't feel one-dimensional. It's an interesting film with nice little twists. The soundtrack is both good and bad because it is by Marilyn Manson. I say that because as it's by him the film is labelled as a worthless teen flick, which is not the case. It's good because - and while some of his music does suck - the tracks included in the film are good. Not too gory, this again is both a blessing and a sin. It's a zombie film so we expect lots of gore but the fact not much is added makes it not just be about blood but has to have a plot too.Diana
Rating: Summary: A real shame to the actual game, why did capcom endorsed it? Review: It is a shame that this movie has nothing to do with the actual game. The zombies are more laughable than they are scary. (...)Also the atmosphere in the video is what the RE Movie should have been about but this movie is simply an average horror movie. I cannot believe that Capcom endorsed these bunch of idiots to create a movie for the best survival horror game ever. (...) Where is the story? Where are the original characters?. Come on even the (realy bad by the way) movie of the house of the dead is closer to its game (also a shame) than this one. If I could give it negative stars I would give it at least 10 negatives, not for the movie but because it has nothing to do with the games at all so why call it Resident Evil. Don't get me wrong the movie is "fine", the girls are realy gorgeous and the story not too bad but IT SIMPLY IS NOT THE RESIDENT EVIL STORY AT ALL, NOT FROM ANY OF THE GAMES, NOT FROM A COMBINATION OF THEM, NOT FROM ANYWHERE NEAR. Damn, I am upset with this.
