Summary: Creatin Criterion Ripoff
Review: First, I want to say that I really,REALLY have liked this movie for sometime now. If this were the only version available, I probably would have given it 3-1/2 stars. But when you pay over 30 bucks for a DVD, you expect lots of bells and whistels and shiny things. But today I just happened to check out the back of the regular DVD in a Dept. store. The Criterion version only has audio in 2 channel stereo. If that's what the film was originally recorded in, fine. But, it has since been remixed (as have many titles for DVD) in English 5.1, which is available on the Dept. store release for half the price. But thqt's not allllll you get!! Also for half the price, you get French AND Spanish, both in 5.1 surround. For thjose who speak neither language-or who don't have a surround sound system-it's probably no big deal. The thing that originally attracted me to DVD's was the separate language tracks. It takes away from text-book boredom, and you get to hear how the languages are truly spoken. Even if the detp-store version only had English, I would still be miffed by the fact that it's in 5.1,whilst the Criterion version only has stereo (those who are finicky about sound will understand). While the picture quality is superb..and okay..the audio isn't THAT bad..the "extras" really aren't that good.Maybe for film students and really hardcore fans. It was neat to see the "deleted scenes" via the story board, but on the whole, this particualr DVD is wayyyyy overpriced for what you get. I thougt "The Rock" from the Criterion Collection was great, so I was expecting the same of this.I learned the hard way to research,research,research before purchase!And despite the claim of additional footage, it's exactly the way I remember it,(and I've seen it al least 2-4 times a year before I got the DVD).Maybe I missed somthing (or we've all become desensitized to squibs and gunfire in the years since it's initial release).

Summary: High Tech Long Ranger
Review: This is a very well done, ultra violent, sci-fi movie. The scary thing about it is some plot elements that were considered outragous during its release (mid 80's) is now more realistic: privately run prisons, corporate police forces, artifical organs with competitive prices, totally automated real estate shopping and domestic terrorism.However, some of the most hard core fans of this movie have never realized that the basic storyline is based on the old Lone Ranger serials and television series. Both have the basic plot of a law enforcement agent being killed by his own to hide a crime. Then, the left for dead agent coming back to avenge his death and bring his assilants to justice. Here are the parallels if you can't spot them out. Texas Rangers -- OCP
Lone Ranger -- Murphy
Indian Magic saving lives -- High Tech/Cybernetics imitating life
Tonto -- Officer Anne Lewis Also there were several very blunt parallels. The visor Murphy wears is made to look like a mask. His gun draw is identical in style to that of the old Lone Ranger series. I don't know if Vanderhoffen have admitted to this parallel but anyone that I have pointed it out to has agreed with this observation.

Summary: Bleak, funny, worthwhile.
Review: With perhaps one of the most brutal scenes I have ever seen in a movie (in which firearms are used to dismember the main character), this film isn't for the young or faint of heart. (If watching with someone under the age of 15, you can easily skip this scene by jumping to the next chapter just before it arrives. And, by the way, I do recommend this movie for smart children--with parently supervision, of course and as always--because it is has interesting and provocative themes that create the context for profitable discussions.) I like Robocop for the same reasons I really like Starship Troopers. Indeed, Starship Troopers builds upon the clever, over the top irony and humor in Robocop, painting American culture for what it is--a drippy pap moved by skillful propaganda artists and merchandisers who turn truth, meaning, and reality on its head. You can read my Starship Troopers review if you are interested (it is a better film than Robocop, overall), so I'll stick to this film. Told in the form of a comic book tale of an average man propelled into the role of the tortured superhero--a kind of Wolverine for the machine age--Robocop is at its best in telling a interesting story of corruption in a society that looks like our own, except with the volume turned up to eleven. Nothing terribly deep here, but interesting tidbits pop up with sufficient regularity to set it above many in its genre. But entertaining. And while it is a bit dated in the political issues it confronts, I find it well crafted and effective.

Summary: the definitive version
Review: For me, this is the definitive version of the movie. Criterion haven't really filled the disc with features, but they are adequate. Less is more. We all know about the story, this movie has many underlying plots. The main factor for me is Murphy's personal revenge mission, but essentially this movie is all about one man who had his humanity taken away from him, and starts a quest to get it back. A classic movie, Verhoevens best and the uncut scenes may seem savage and brutal to some but i feel they enhance the story even further. The whole idea behind Murphy's death scene was to create as much sympathy for his character as possible, no matter how brutal the scene was. We live in an age where the bad guys are often cheered as the good guys, but after Murphy's grim demise you almost find yourself cheering when Clarence Boddicker [and his gang] get their just desserts. Murphy's death scene also has a very christian undertone to it. When he is being shot to death he is kneeling with his one remaining arm out to the side, as if he is being crucified. He is also resurrected like Jesus in the bible. I give the film 5/5 as it is a classic The features 3/5, there are not many but what features the disc has are adequate.

Summary: A prophetic movie of future America
Review:
As of the sci-fi year 2002, this movie is 15 years old. Enough time has passed for the visions of this 'near future' movie to come to pass. And they did! Here they are:
BIG IS BACK!
Yes, in 1987, when this movie came out, cars were getting smaller, lighter, and more efficient. "Robocop" blatantly offended this stupid trend by touting a hopeful future in which big, gas guzzling beasts would once again rule the world via advertisements for the '6000 SUX. - Because BIGGER is BETTER!' And look what happened! Bucking the stupid conservation trend, America re-adopted the BIG CAR. Though we haven't quite gotten to the futuristic 8 MPG achieved by the ultra-modern 6000 SUX, many cars on the market today get 10-12 MPG. We're almost there!
OCP RUNS THE COPS!
ROBOCOP's prophetic vision of corporate-owned civil police is slowly, but surely coming to pass. Since ROBOCOP appeared, we have our first for-profit public schools, for-profit prisons, and for-profit health care. Considering how great these former civilian-owned ventures have done under the hands of Corporations, I can't see why the cops aren't yet a division of McDonald-Douglas or AOL-Time Warner.
STAR WARS PEACE PLATFORM
Thank you, GW Bush Jr! It's about time we got one o' these! Soon we'll have a missile defense shield that will definitely protect our country from all those evil foreigners who want to shoot us with intercontinental ballistic missiles just because our country is so much BIGGER and BETTER than their backward, primitive, evil slimeholes they call home.
THE ENFORCEMENT DROID, MODEL 209
While we haven't been able to develop what will be the pinnacle of law enforcement, ED-209, he can't be far off. But already, getting tough on criminals is showing good results. With more people in prison than ever before, the US is projecting the end of crime in Old America within 30 days.
I'LL BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!
Since plots and storylines have been worn to pieces, we can always turn to big breasts and stupidity for TV-viewing enjoyment. Girls on trampolines - I'll buy that for a dollar!
This movie is better than the prophecies of Nostradamus! Thank you, Paul Verhoeven, survivor of Nazi-occupied Denmark, for so accurately showing us what the future holds for America!

Summary: This is my favorite film, both profesionally and personally
Review: If I had to pick a favorite movie, one that stands out above the rest, this would be that film. There is so much to like about this movie, corporate greed, Villians you despise yet in a way have some sympathy for, and a super hero who kicks ... There is no doubt about it this movie is awsome.
Peter Weller stars as Murphey, a cop who on the first day on the job on his new assignment on the east side of detroit is gunned down while in the line of duty. Meanwhile the Corporation OCP is having trouble with their prototype law enforcer ED209, one of the suits springs this new idea to the boss about the Robocop program, and murphey who is slain is the subject to this test. The end result is a part man, part machine, all cop character that is without a doubt one of the best around. In the end the movie is full of action, and an all out great story.
There is one problem with this DVD, THERE ARE NO ... SPECIAL FEATURES!!
Sorry, like I said they really went cheap on this movie when it comes to special features, we only get the theatrical trailor for this movie (which is equally awsome even if they don't use the Robocop theme music) and the trailors for Carrie and the Terminator.
Other than that buy this for the movie itself.

Summary: Just an ultra violent junk film.
Review: Robocop shows just why Paul Verhoven's films are doing badly these days.
His penchant for eccessive violence spoils any possible story.
Showgirls and Starship Troopers both flopped and Robocop gets negative comments from everyone that I have spoken to about it,a couple of dozen people all had the same opinion:- eccessively violent junk.
And it is interesting to see the reaction when mentioning Paul's films,the eyes roll and the words come "oh,what a piece of violent junk" or "what was that supposed to be"?
The public are rejecting your films so how about a non violent story Paul,or at least with reduced violence? It is interesting that people who make these sort of films hide behind words like 'satire' and 'art' to justify their films.The cumulative effect of sadistic and ultra-violent films and music has it's effect on our young with the youth suicide rate rising.

Brings a 1987 comic book film to life, it's about a Cop ( Peter
Weller) who gets blowned away by thugs and comes back as a Robotic Hero to kick Criminal butt. I own the Criterion Edition, which features the full Uncut and Uncensored Director's Cut featuring more Stomach-churning Gore that the U.S. Censors wouldn't allow in a R-Rated movie back in the 80's.
other similar movies i would recommend: Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Re-Animator, From Dusk till Dawn, The Toxic Avenger,

Summary: A little bit of the old utra-violence!
Review: This is an excellent film. It may seem tacky if you have not seen it. But this movie blends Sci-Fi, Action, and Satire together wonderfully. Here's a brief rundown of the plot, In a future society a corporation-OCP, controls mostly everything including the police force and a cop(weller)is blown apart by bad guys and OCP matches whats left of weller to a machine suit and if I told you anymore it would ruin it. Anyway this an excellent movie and if you like action and Sci-Fi and satire then this is an excellent movie to have. I own the regular DVD, not the Criterion edition, so I could not give you any pointers on that.
