Summary: gorgeous music, moody tone poem
Review: This is truly a great movie, but I second the motion of those who want to see the original released version available again. Harrison Ford's voice-over narration gave it an extra bit of dreamy introspection that was very beautiful. But I think that both endings - the original's happy escape that the DC's sudden ending at the elevator - suck.

Summary: Baby with the Bathwater
Review: The obviously contrived "Hollywood ending" of the original version (which I have and treasure) was its major (and, arguably, only) flaw. The "director's cut" on this DVD eliminates THAT problem, but, alas, also gratuitously drops Harrison Ford's voice-over, which I (unlike the professional reviewers) admired greatly. Of course, I also liked "Goodfellas" and "Casino" -- go figure!

Review: Every shot a perfect photo... shadows and light... Vangelis' best work... perhaps the best work of all main characters... violence that appropriately makes you feel sad... you must pay attention and think... every viewing reveals new details. My all-time favorite movie. Love both versions. Didn't miss voice-over in director's cut until Rutger Hauer death scene.

Summary: A philsofical manifest!
Review: Blade Runner has got to be among one of the best movies ever. The enviroment is brilliant, the scene is dark and decaying. It is really a movie about the human existence. It is about consieusnes, the death - and birth - of (a) god, and about how the discovery of mortality touches ones mind and makes you consieus. This movie holds so much, and i think that everyone should see it - and understand it.

Summary: How 'bout rereleasing the original version?
Review: While it's still a good flick, the director's cut can't hold a candle to the original version. Harrison Ford's world-weary narration makes the movie stand apart from the herd. I would much prefer to have a copy of the original myself. Incidently, did you know that Dustin Hoffman was originally slated to play Decker? Jeez.

Summary: One of the best films ever made.
Review: Blade Runner is one of the best written, best acted, most dramatic, and most thought provoking movies ever made. In the Science-Fiction genre, it certainly has to rate near the top. In terms of the realm of all movies, there are a great many good films, but, I think, Blade Runner still ranks near the top. In a time when all too many movies (and especially "SciFi" movies) are mostly about big noisy fiery explosions, we can always fall back to a movie like Blade Runner that is about important issues (how does humanity interact whith its environment, with other humans, what is the value of human life, what does it mean to be human). And Blade Runner presents those issues in a dramatic and thought provoking manner. I still think the original cut of the movie was better, but in some ways it is a testement to the quality of the film that changing parts of it does little to dull its quality.

Summary: Has no one read the book?
Review: This is definitely in my Top 5 of favorite films. But since wearing out my VHS tape several years ago, I have been looking for another copy of the theatrical release, because the Director's Cut really loses something. The whole gist of the film, and the book by Philip K. Dick, is a 1930s-40s era detective story. A hard-boiled narrator is required, I think. It just gave me a certain feeling, like a participant rather than a spectator. The unicorn scene is silly, and meaningless unless the viewer has read the book. It seems Scott never intended to bring up a question of Deckard's humanity (as opposed to replicant, not just cruel), at least the movie doesn't show it. This fact disgusted Philip K. Dick, who was advising in the early writing and shooting, and he walked off the project, claiming that Scott was missing the whole point of the story. The "happy ending" is actually from the book, not Hollywood hogwash, but in the context is not ALL happy - Deckard and/or Rachael may be replicants, and with their muddled memories, do not know if they have been around four weeks or four years, and could die at any moment - just like real people! Knowing that, the end scene gave a sense of exhiliration and escape, tinged with foreboding and doubt. Rather than the "Oh." that comes with the closing elevator doors and then the credits. I don't mean to bash the film, though, just the Director's Cut and the fanatics who insist it is the only good version. It is definitely the finest moment for Rutger Hauer and Sean Young, and right up there for Harrison Ford, despite his protests.

Review: This movie is one of the greatest sci-fi classics. along with movies like "DUNE". there will always be great viewing at my house. Also both versions have there place. And I don't belive that you can even compare them as the same movie. So to each his own this ones great.

Summary: Film Making The Way It Ought To Be!
Review: Beautiful, Stunning, Exciting...Just a few words you can use to describe Ridley Scott's powerful 1982 sci-fi picture, Blade Runner. The plot is plausible and the acting is superb. The music creates the perfect tone for the movie and the special effects are dream-like. Surprisingly, while this is one of Ford's better pictures, he doesn't have fond memories of making it...Oh well. The real question here is why in God's name didn't the producers let Ridley tell the story the way he wanted it to be seen 16 years ago? Bottom line, this film is a must see. Also look into buying the soundtrack on this site...

Summary: Directors cut or original cut
Review: After reading the reviews posted here, I am glad that I am not alone when I say that the original cut of the movie was better. We all know why, everyone else here has said it already. DVD has its advantages over the standard VHS format and deserves its credit, not the movie. I will be forced to watch the DVD version and my VHS version of the European cut until the it comes in it 'correct' format. Now I need a DVD ram to put my 'original' cut onto disc before my tape is worn out due to watching it too frequently.
