Summary: this flick spoke to the kid in me
Review: I grew up on Lost In Space so I stayed away from this flick for years, but it was on cable one day so I gave it a look and I'll be darned if it wasn't GREAT! Sure it's cheesy as all get out, but heck so was the original show. I loved it. They added some more drama, but they kept the idea that Lost In Space should be a cheesy entertainment for kids. They added tons of modern FX, but they didn't kill the heart or fun of the original idea. It's impossible for me to hate this movie. I was afraid they'd take out all of the fun and make it so called adult sci-fi (zzzzzzzz), but they kept it goofy. Too bad these folks weren't around for Battlestar Galactica the remake (zzzzzzz).

Summary: not cutting edge sci fi - but it's great Lost In Space
Review: There's not much here that will rival Arthur C. Clarke's best work or change the face of modern science fiction - and that's how it should be. This is Lost In Space. That means the Robinson family and a really cool robot facing all kinds of weird monsters and fun adventures in space. I never missed an episode of the classic tv show and I enjoyed this remake too. It's a modern take on a childhood favorite and it works on that level. I loved this movie.

Review: After all the bad reviews I had little hope for this update of my childhood favorite BUT then I saw and it - and isn't half bad! It's really very good! Slicker and more modern but they didn't ruin what I loved about the original. Made me feel like a kid again!

Summary: Oh the pain, the pain,.
Review: Of reading those terrible trash reviews of this movie. For alot of us dinosaurs it captured the spirit of the original series in a fun popcorn and coke kinda way, as it should. We didnt watch the series for profund philosophical meanderings like you get in shows like the X-Files. It was 1966, we hadnt yet been to the moon much less Mars and Jupiter so our imagination was allowed free reign to enjoy all the scares and thrills that the Robinsons endured
And for those clueless critics who bash Oldmans Dr Smith for not being as camp as Jonathan Harrises portrayal, try finding the pilot of LIS and you will see that Dr Smith as originally conceived was not humerous at all. But a cold and treacherous conspirator as Oldman later played him.
Great film, good effects , great story.
No danger here Will Robinson.

Summary: Eye Candy Update To The Series
Review: I was very excited when it was announced that a big-screen version of Lost in Space would be made. Unfortunately, its realization did not live up to my expectations.
The basic story remains the same with family Robinson attempting to journey to Alpha Centauri in the quest to colonize a new world. The casting and characters, however, were altered to appeal to a newer generation. In the lead role is William Hurt, as the aloof and work-driven Professor John Robinson. His wife Maureen, played by the buxom Mimi Rogers, is the glue that continually tries to hold an increasingly dysfunctional family together. Judy Robinson, played by Heather Graham, is an ice queen who is as work-driven as her father. Lacey Chabert and Jack Johnson play Penny and Will Robinson, respectively, with the former embodying something of a punk rocker image and the latter of an egg-head who yearns for an expression of love from his father more than any scientific achievement. As an aside, I would say that Johnson's Will Robinson character probably comes closest to a parallel of the TV series' character.
Rounding out the cast is Matt LeBlanc, or TV's "Friends," as the Major Don West, a battle-hardened soldier who resents being sent on what he terms "a baby-sitting mission," and Gary Oldman as Dr. Zachary Smith. In the case of Oldman's Smith character, gone is the pretense of a cowardly schoolyard, know-it-all bully. In its place you have a genuinely despicable sociopath who has no qualms about murdering the entire Jupiter 2 crew.
I love the scene where Oldman tries to convince LeBlanc to join him in a mutiny and LeBlanc responds: "How could I have been so blind, Smith? Why don't I just go get you a weapon, that way we can take over the ship." Oldman's response (scowling): "Sarcasm is the tool of a small mind."
The frequent bantering between West and Smith, not unlike it was in the series, is one of the few high points of the film.
The special effects are simply awesome, particularly the launch sequence. Unfortunately, the storyline gets bogged down in an alternate-future, time-traveling melange. There is no real sense of family in the storytelling, despite a heavy-handed effort at the end, and you never really care about the characters.
Still, the movie is worth viewing at least once. It's a shame that the makers didn't decide to film a sequel. With the right script, a follow-up could have been quite entertaining.

Review: I saw this on cable and it was far better than I expected. the casting is very good and it's a lot of fun. I loved the show as a kid and enjoyed the movie now at 4O.

When I first went to see this movie a couple of years ago, I didn't really like it. I sat through it and thought, "Hmmmmmmmm, so I gave up washing my hair to see this?????"
However having watched it again recently on TV, (there was nothing else on, I was a captive audience!) I think I was being too judgemental mainly because I am not a fan of the series "Friends" and having Matt Le Blanc as Major Don West irritated me no end.
This was unfair on Le Blanc who actually was really good as Don West, and his sparing with Judy Robinson played by Heather Graham was really quite fun and sweet and done really well.
William Hurt did well in his role as the starchy Space Dad and Mimi Rogers was excellent as his put upon and long suffering wife and the irritating Lacey Chabert as Penny Robinson was also quite endearing in small doses. However the real show stealers were the Robot, Gary Oldman as the odious Doctor Smith and Jack Johnson as the bright but emotionally fragile Will Robinson.
This "Lost in Space" is a lot slicker, and a lot darker than its 1960s counterpart, the earth that Robison's leave behind is slowly dying and the hope of humanity rests in the hands of one family who are now lost in space.
There are great special effects, a really good and funky soundtrack, lots of action, some quite humorous moments, such as when Judy kisses Don and he looks really smug until he sees her father glaring at him from afar, along with Doctor Smith's screeches of "We're doomed! DOOMED!" and the little known trivia that several members of the old "Lost in Space" TV series had cameo roles in the movie!
All in all this was a great movie, and I feel a little guilty about not appreciating its worth the first time around but we live and learn don't we?

Review: The classic tale of the Robinson family (Swiss Family Robinson) was moved to a science fiction setting on television. That show is now a movie. But some of the ideas have been lost from the original and this would better be called Swiss Family Dysfunctional.The Robinson family is not a happy one and neither is Earth. Pollution got out of hand and the planet is dying. A new planet must be found. The Robinsons are going to fly a ten-year mission to a distant planet and set up a warp gate that will allow easy colonization. The world is depending upon them. But there are those who are against the idea and want the plane for themselves. They have hired Dr. Smith to sabotage the mission. To keep things quiet, Smith is trapped on the doomed ship. Well, the family manages to survive and goes through a series of harrowing adventures. All the while their internal squabbles grow more and more heated. In the end, they manage to rebuild their family but they have blown up a planet, committed genocide, and possible doomed the Earth. But there is still something fascinating about this film. Mimi Rogers has one of the best scenes when she takes on her husband (Hurt) and the pilot (le Blanc). This can be an enjoyable film but if you are looking for a film rendition of a television show you loved, I think you will be a bit disappointed.
