Review: Absolutely one of the WORST movies I've seen in the last 20 years........so bad, it makes disasters like "Beverly Hills Cop III" and "Natural Born Killers" look like timeless masterpieces. Marlon Brando & Val Kilmer both had to be heavily influenced on pharmeseuticals to agree to "act" in this piece of garbage!

Summary: Excellent morality tale
Review: ... this is a film worth seeing. It is, in many respects, a modern fable about the evils of communism and its chiliastic inclinations. Brando's "experiments" and use of fear and terror to generate a facade of benevolent rule, as well as his attempt to displace God and act as such himself, suggests the sort of hubris characteristic of modern centralized States. The assumption that in order for one to be healed of one's imperfection or sickness requires an enlightened class utilizing science and planning, creates the conditions necessary for the distortions of the good that result: things are only made worse and "men" turned more savage as Dr. Moreau insists on creating a solution for their condition. Using psychological conditioning methods, intimidation, and coercion -- staples of communists States -- Moreau effectively de-personalizes his subjects, removing any hope or sense of the future from them. The result is predictable: a destructive nihilism that, because it has been cultivated in the apostasy of modernism and totalitarianism, carries the day.

Review: This has got to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen.The writing was bad and most of the acting wasn't very good,either.I really was sorry to see Marlon Brando,who is one of the greatest actors of all time,making such a fool out of himself.As far as Val Kilmer goes,he wasn't very likable here-instead watch The Ghost and the Darkness,which came out not too long after this movie,and is many times better.I thought this movie was bad when I saw it at the theater,but I thought I'd give it another chance on cable.My opinion of it went downhill even further the second time.Of course all these coments are just my own opinion-if you like the movie good for you,but I can't stand it.

Summary: Laughably bad
Review: I must have been naive in my younger days, because there was I time I was anxious to watch this film. It looked intriguing, with a lot of potential to be a classic sci-fi thriller. Ha, not even a director of such talent as John Frankenheimer could save this mess. Considering the fact it stars the lifeless Val Kilmer and the overacting of Marlon Brando, acting isn't much in this film. As a matter of fact, David Thewlis and Fairuza Balk deliver far better performances.

Summary: Tremendous "Tour de Force" in the Comedy genre.
Review: Although "The Island of Dr. Moreau" was intended as some sort of message to people attempting to change the course of human history, I thought it degenerated into a comedy in the mold of the "Evil Dead 2". It has tragedy(Ash's girlfriend dies in the Evil Dead 2, in the same vain, Dr. Moreau is murdered by his creations, and Moreau's daughter is also killed by her father's creations), comedy(Ash's own hand gives him the finger in the Evil Dead 2, conversely, how can a person not find the little guy who dresses like Moreau hilarious, the scene where Moreau and the little guy are playing Chopin's "Polonaise" is unforgettable!), perhaps the only difference between the two is the setting and budget.Whereas the Evil Dead 2 operated on a low budget, the producers of this movie had an infinite amount of money to work with, which accounts for the prescence of the great Marlon Brando, and the always "cool" Val Kilmer, and of course, the superb special effects. As opposed to being a "sci-fi thriller", this is a kind of a strange and unusual comedy, nonetheless, I would suggest you purchase this movie(as opposed to renting!) when you recieve the opportunity. Any lover of movies owns the Evil Dead 2, and any lover of movies should own the movie that is the Evil Dead 2's equal, "The Island of Dr. Moreau". Furthurmore, Brando gives a superb performance(doesn't he always!), and as for Val Kilmer, I'm at odds trying to think of a description of his performance, I suppose "Awesome" will suffice. In conclusion, the "Island of Dr. Moreau" is a great movie, but not in the way the Godfather or Spartacus was great, more like the way the Evil Dead 2 and the 3 Monty Python films were great.

Summary: House of Pain
Review: It took Marlon Brando 45 years to become a murmuring, bloated self-parody... and Val Kilmer only 12. In this endless, misshapen mess, they have the roles (you can't say they "play" them) originally and brilliantly acted by Charles Laughton and Arthur Hohl in the wonderful 1932 version, which is highly recommended. As Dr. Moreau, Laughton was creepy and quite terrifying -- the same could be said of Brando, but not in admiration. As for Kilmer... well, he's no Arthur Hohl.

Review: I LOVED this movie. It was weird, eccentric, and bizzare. Some of it took me a few veiwings to figure out. But, I am NOT complaining. It's part of the fun to this movie. Everything was just so brilliantly strange.

Summary: An Overlooked Masterpiece
Review: Very few people can handle this movie. It busts violently out of the mold of everyday filmmaking. It doesn't feel right to classify this film as science fiction. Looking at some of the other reviews I see that most people like the 1930's and the 1977 version better. That's because those were both straight-up monster movies. They didn't evoke the emotion, horror, and tragedy the way this version does. Though it's an updated adaptation of Wells' dark masterpiece, it has the same spirit. I watched this movie again today with a friend and he said that it's such an amazing film because it's one of those completely ingenius ideas. And it certainly is. The gentle, subtle uneasiness that Douglas feels at the beginning of the movie is deftly hinted to the audience. And this soft horror is mixed with sickening gut shots that dynamically keep the audience staggering from one insane, yet understandable, event to the next. This subtext permeates the entire film and is perfectly tied together with the underlying moral allegory in the beginning and ending voice overs. No one can say that this film is pointless - yet they do. The music, the visual effects, the creature effects, the acting, the direction, the cinematography are done nearly perfectly. This film is definitely a classic, even though most people don't have the insight to see that.

Review: No contender, here! This has to be one of the worst films ever made. Taking a classic from one of the masters of the sci-fi genre and turning it into this mishmash borders on sacrilege. Brando should have declined this one and stayed in his Polynesian paradise. Its only saving grace: the always dependable Val Gilmer who must have had a great time mimicking Brando in one scene.
