Summary: one of the two best horror movies of all time
Review: this movie has it all horror,suspense,and night marish qualities. when i first saw this in 1983 i had nightmares for months i use this as critiria for good horror flicks. john carpenter uses his imagination in all aspects. ive got the video of this movie and will have to buy another because my first one is worn out. have fun with this one

Summary: The curiosity of certain versions
Review: Like most people who have genuinely rated this movie as an all-time classic since the day of its first theatrical release, I've often wondered about the two different versions in circulation. This is in regard to the soundtrack.Anybody else notice it? In the original theatrical release, the Stevie Wonder song SUPERSTITION is featured in a key scene. Completely appropriate to the film's tone, context and sub-text (paranoia) the song was replaced for the video release with a piece of unidentified, non-lyric funk (library music?. The US widescreen laser disc version also has this change. The pan/scan version shown on Australian cable has the Wonder song back in. So does the US DVD. This might not be a review, I've written copiusly on the film in both my Australian published books, BEYOND IMAGINATION (1984)and SHOCKING CINEMA (1987) - not a plug, both went out of print long ago - and I also reviewed the film for the British publication STARBURST when THE THING was first released in U.K. The story I've heard, and would love to have verified, is that the song was dropped from the video release (and apparently from the W/s LD) due to rights problems). Anybody able to shed light on this? As to a review, here goes: Despite the developent of CGI, the practical effects achieved by Rob Botin and staged by JC still manage to both shock and be as believable now as when first released. The atmosphere of THE THING fully captures both the sheer horror of John W Campbell's novella in a way that Howard Hawks didn't. Hawks version is a classic of a different kind. From a veteran film critic/historian, I can't rate JC's version highly enough. If you haven't seen it, your missing a modern classic. Perhaps one day, the relatively small coteries of afficionados for this film will grow. The final words are DON'T MISS IT! Phil Edwards, Sydney, Australia

Summary: You just couldn't ask for a better DVD.
Review: A great movie transferred almost flawlessly to DVD. The visuals are bright and crisp and the sound is incredible. If you haven't seen this movie you will not be disappointed, it is one of the most underrated movies ever. Great special effects, great story, great cast, etc....I could go on and on raving about the high quality of this movie and the disc itself. A must-have for anyone's collection.

Review: This movie was pretty good. Kurt Russel and the other actors played their parts well. The only bad thing was that there was hardly any suspense throughout the movie.But, if you like a good gross-out movie give it a try.

Review: Probably the most misunderstood and underrated movie in years. The world of 12 men is suddenly turned upside down as they dig up an alien that can take them over and imitate them perfectly. Paranoia and suspense throughout as Kurt Russell leads the men in figuring out who's who. END

Summary: Excellent DVD of a semi-classic B-Movie
Review: As a Kurt Russell fan, I loved The Thing on DVD. The disc is loaded with extras. This disc makes me hope we will see DVDs of "Big Trouble In Little China" and "Escape From New York." The transfer is excellent for a film with this age. The color is a little faded, but most of the films during the early eighties looked that way anyway. END

Review: Great movie. Carpenters and Russells best. To anyone just now thinking to add this to their collection, please be advised that there is a re-release coming in October with remastered picture and 5.1 surround that includes all the same features as this Collectors Edition.

Review: My all time,number one favorite film,"The thing" is a hell of a ride. From the classic opening credits to the suprising ending "the thing" burns into the mind with its chilling mood @ atmosphere.It also has the best movie monster ever seen,no weak cgi,old fashioned blood @ tears created this horrific beast.It takes the the viewer from one tense situation to another,giving you the feeling it wont be a happy ending for the 12 men trapped in the middle of nowhere.If you couldnt tell I highly recommened "The thing".
